you were my lesson I had to learn, I was your fortress you had to burn

This one goes back a ways. I can't remember if I blogged about this before, but early on in the pandemic, I put together a list of simple recipes for new home cooks, as well as virtual exploration destinations for folks trapped at home. That was clear back in 2020.

This put me on some kind of...list.

I got three messages from Lish Babela, one in December of 2021, the following two in January of 2022, two weeks apart, recommending her site's list of virtual museum tours in Singapore. But it didn't stop there.

Mary Pauline Maido let me know she had a site of virtual museum tours in Ireland in January of 2022. Then Katrina Lapid sent me a set of virtual tours of New Zealand. That was in February of 2022. She sent another email twice in March of 2022 with the same exact information.

In Aprille of 2022, she emailed me again. I just wasn't sure what to say. Then I got an email from Apple Smith...and got incensed.
While we have transitioned to a new normal and can finally go out and about, some of us are still homebound.
We can 'finally go out and about'? I don't know about your region, Apple, but where I live? People are still dropping in place. We still have eight hundred deaths on average a week, and over one thousand new cases a day just in my county and the county next door, let along the rest of the state. This is NOT over, and I highly resent your chipper, breezy conviction.
The [blog entry] you shared have given readers a timeless way to be active and productive. You also brought them to places at the comfort of their homes with the tours!
This would have been a comfort to hear, were it not preceded by the blind arrogance of the first sentence. As it is, I do not think you're speaking sincerely, and I wish you'd stop speaking to me.
They can also visit “The Couve” through our well-curated Virtual Tours in Vancouver, where we’ve personally picked only the best! It’s a one-stop page for all the great places they can visit from museums to art galleries and more.
Great. Linked. Anything else?
This is gonna be a fun trip!
Die on fire,
Best,

Apple Smith
I hope your favorite book is made into a hugely popular film with a terrible cast by Uwe Boll.

Is everyone HAPPY NOW?!? I'm crawling back under my rock and blocking you all if you write me again. Dear gods.

weave a story so I don't have to talk, no

This happened earlier on June 28th:
[09:14] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I am at the first primi in Sl if someone wants a tp or LM
[09:14] Ixxxxx Rxxxxxxx: You're where?
[09:14] Cxxxxxxxxx Cxxxxxxx: first prim? Isn't the oldest object something by Stellar Sunshine?
[09:15] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Philip made this prim
[09:15] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Boardman (156,199,24)
[09:16] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: AApril 29, 2002
oldest-prim1
So I went to see.
[09:16] Mxxxxxxxx Dxxxxxxxx: Well he's older than that prim, and he's older than me
[09:17] Sxxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: older than the first prim ever created in SL?
[09:17] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): So, considering SL was released in alpha in 2004, this is very interesting.
[09:17] txxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: he cant be older than this prim
[09:17] Mxxxxxxxx Dxxxxxxxx: Well in RL I thinks
[09:17] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: yeah
[09:17] Cxxxxxxxxx Cxxxxxxx: ah pre-release
[09:17] Mxxxxxxxx Dxxxxxxxx: It was a bit of double-edged sarcasm
[09:17] FSxxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: was he part of SL when it was still called "Linden World"
[09:18] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): A-ha
oldest-prim2

History is important. I dimly remember Linden World; I think Another World, the first virtual-world system I played in, was a knock-off, actually. Or it was the other way around, but I truly think Another World came after.

{{Insert from the Editrix: I'm wrong--they may have been congruent design paths, so I don't feel Linden World 'stole' anything in any sense, but what I've remembered for years as Another World was actually just Worlds, and it launched as part of the Blair Witch 2 promotional event in October of 2000.}}
[09:19] txxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: so, why green
[09:20] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Why not?
[09:21] txxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: a basic cube :)
Interesting.

Though I was also amused I was the tallest person there.

And the final SLRFL totals came in, and they're...beyond phenomenal, this year.

Mirie it is while sumer i-last

This seems a fairly decent conversation; while the original question has been removed, as r/secondlife's Rule 4 is post nothing against ToS, the question is retained (mostly) in Reddit's email to me. Under the title "Copyrighted content for personal use and Linden Lab", this question: "I am not sure if this has been discussed before. I want to upload a mesh model to use as an avatar from a different game for my personal use, I don't want to sell it ever. My question is: does Linde". Her question finished with something close to "Linden labs allow this?" And the easy answer is no. No copyrighted content from other games.

But there are some valuable viewpoints in the comments, one of which had this link, which, while it discusses a specific case of copyright infringement, also contains valid information on what is and is not allowed.

Still, the simple answer works: no, we are not allowed to upload copyrighted material from any other property without permission from that property. Now, if we have permission to make an avatar, clothing item, object, from the rights holder? Go to town. But without those rights it's copyright infringement, and there can be penalties for that.

In other news...the leaves are changing!

With foulës song;
Oc now neghëth windës blast
And weder strong.
Ei, ei, what this night is long,
And Ich with wel michel wrong
Sorwe and murne and fast.
This is from the earliest surviving secular song known in English. Oddly, I knew the summer version, but I'd never heard this one.

And in other other news, this chat capture about Marvel vs. DC:
[21:34] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: There will really be a JOKER movie coming out soon.
[21:35] Emilly Orr: Yes, but it's non-canonical according to DC.
[21:36] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: but it has the DC logo?
[21:36] Emilly Orr: Sure. It's from DC.
[21:36] Emilly Orr: What they're saying is, they're making it, but it's alternate universe.
[21:37] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: oh, yes..an alternate world.
[21:37] Emilly Orr: Like the What If series Marvel used to put out--What if Wolverine was a vampire? What if Iron Man turned evil? What If took those concepts and did one-offs based on them.
[21:38] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Sounds like fun..and The Joker movie looked interesting.
[21:38] Emilly Orr: So, yes, we are getting a better reboot of Joker than we got with the execrable Suicide Squad, but unless it, itself, spawns a sequel, that movie's Joker won't cross over into other DC films.
Apparently, dissatisfaction with Jared Leto's Joker performance is so high that, while Suicide Squad is getting a sequel, it's turned into a story of Harley breaking up with him and striking out on her own with other superheroines.
[21:39] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: lets hope not, He looked just as scary as the others.
Actually, the only thing that comes close in the terms of "official" Joker portrayals that comes close to Leto's is the time in the comics where Joker cut his own face off. (There are pictures of the panel. I am not linking them. You want to go search, they're not hard to find.)
Every other portrayal could line up with the new alt-Joker upcoming.
[21:43] Emilly Orr: While that is true, at least the upcoming Joker would never tattoo "Damaged" across his forehead in italic script. Because really? Really? Come on now. And silver teeth? Really?
[21:44] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: apparently this Joker did not end up in a chemical bath like the original did.
[21:49] Emilly Orr: No, he actually has an incredible reason for becoming the Joker. Hard, hard life, in a hard, violent city, when all he wanted to do was lighten the mood. And getting ground down day after day until there was nothing left. Nothing but the Joker.
[21:50] Emilly Orr: It's entirely plausible.
[21:50] Emilly Orr: I am tentatively looking forward to it.
[21:50] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: True.
[21:51] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: I don't know how DC could have the characters they do, and mess up their movies so much in comparison to Marvel.
[21:51] Emilly Orr: Oh, I can answer that.
[21:52] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: It is hard too translate what the creators and writers of Comics into a Movie.
[21:52] Emilly Orr: So, Marvel is more cohesive--it's always been an umbrella company with multiple departments. They're all interconnected, the movie people talk to the tv people talk to the comics people talk to the toy line people.
[21:53] Emilly Orr: Versus DC. DC maintains a singular, monolithic upper office, with distant toy lines (which is why sometimes costumes, faces and such are off on the toys), an entirely separate TV/animation branch, and an entirely separate movie branch.
[21:53] Emilly Orr: If you watch DC animation, it is BRILLIANT. Smooth lines, great art, great plots. Genuine heartfelt characters that feel RIGHT.
[21:54] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: DC's big Justice League movie with all their major characters made only 659 million worldwide
[21:54] Emilly Orr: Yes. That figure includes DVD/Blu-Ray sales. It's staggeringly bad.
[21:54] Emilly Orr: But the upper brass doesn't talk to the 'lower' companies.
[21:55] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: That is only about 40 million more than "Ant Man and the Wasp"
[21:55] Emilly Orr: Case in point: one of their animation series, Justice League, I think, was doing amazingly well. Popular, people wanted to watch, wanted to interact, wanted to buy product tie-ins.
[21:55] Emilly Orr: DC upper brass canceled it. Because too many girls were fans.
[21:55] Emilly Orr: And they wanted boy fans.
[21:56] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: Dumb.
Very.
[21:56] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: Marvel just wants people's money. Smart company :)
[21:56] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Too my obseervations over the years..ever since after the "Crisis of infinite earths' comic books both DC and Marvel have gotten more violent
Actually, the violence comes and goes. Violence is always somewhere, but some things are played more to the heart, some things are played more for laughs, some things are just knock-down, drag-out fighting. Flow and ebb.
[21:56] Emilly Orr: Which...is not how the world works anymore. Just as there were always female fans of so-called "male" properties, they're even more visible now.
[21:56] Emilly Orr: Exactly.
[21:57] Emilly Orr: Now, granted, Marvel sold off some of their bigger characters (hence why, until the last two Avengers movies and the first Spider-man movie in between, Spider-man was under the control of Sony Entertainment), and what they had left was the B-roll.
[21:57] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: I don't follow the comic books. Too expensive.
[21:57] Emilly Orr: But look at what they've done with it.
[21:57] Emilly Orr: Iron Man went from a dated, suffering timeline to a headliner through several films.
[21:58] Emilly Orr: Guardians of the Galaxy, an absolutely NEGLECTED comic, has two movies and a third planned, and show up in cameos in Avengers films.
[21:58] Emilly Orr: People embraced these characters because all Marvel really dd was say "Hey, we like these guys. We think you will too."
[21:59] Emilly Orr: DC, on the other hand, relies far too much on their target demographic figures, and how to push them in the direction the head office wants them to go, not the direction they organically go.
[21:59] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: I really liked Captain Marvel. I'm told by people who are more into the comics that the character has always been kind of d-list in comics. But the movie was great and made over a billion worldwide.
[21:59] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Yesh, but they only made two Fantastic 4 movies..and they did not appear in End game.
[22:00] Emilly Orr: There's a reason for that, Fantastic Four is cursed.
[22:00] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: I thought Marvel did not own the rights to them or to the X-Men.
[22:00] Emilly Orr: NO ONE has ever made a successful Fantastic 4 film. EVER. The only success they've ever had beyond the comics is about a year run in animation.
[22:00] Emilly Orr: They don't anymore, which is also why X-Men movies are being made by other people.
[22:02] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: There are4 (Mavel) Captain Mavels..one a Kree with power bands on his wrist, the other Afro american female whose power was Light and lasers( I liked Her), Ms. Marvel, and an other alien.
[22:02] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: I'm probably atypical of Marvel movie fans. I never see them in theaters. I rent them over the Internet several months later.
[22:03] Emilly Orr nods
[22:03] Emilly Orr: Not the worst pattern, not everyone likes the theatre experience.
[22:03] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: Or several years in some cases. I'm still waiting to rent Infinity War and Endgame back to back.
[22:04] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: And yes, I know who dies. I can't help it :)
[22:04] Emilly Orr smiles
[22:04] Emilly Orr: I actually managed to dodge the spoilers!
[22:04] Emilly Orr: We saw Endgame for the first time last night.
[22:04] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I have not bought a comic book in five years..no..since 2000..if i do, i go too Barns& noble and buy a graphic novel..collected stories.
[22:06] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Good night, Caledon. Sweet dreams
[22:06] Exxxxxxxx Pxxxxx: Goodnight
[22:06] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Hugs Emilly and Elenabeth.
[22:07] Emilly Orr hugs Kara
[22:07] Emilly Orr: Good night!
And that was that. Though I still think my conclusion is correct: Marvel suffered a financial blow, sold off some successful properties, and is now making the best with what they've got left. DC is trying to play to the safest bets, with overdone market research, and ignoring half of it, and won't let writers really write for the movies. And as a result, they're hamstringing themselves.

long way down, suffocating in this dream

Pursuant to the (far earlier) discussion about Tilia, this longish chat capture:
[12:56] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: Hello neighbors
[12:57] Jxxxxx Zxxx: Hi [Rxx]
[12:57] Cxxx Sxxxxxxxx: Greetings Mr. [Oxxxxxxx]!
Now, this is, in the technical sense, breaking an agreement I had with one of the personages above (who I will not further identify in any way), not to mention them on this blog. I am hazarding they meant in an unflattering light, and not just casual conversation along with the rest of everything. If I am wrong in this assumption, expect this entry to disappear at some point.
[12:58] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: just got the information by a friendly cat, that LL prepared some serious changes. I have not read the articles myself, but you can find the forum thread about it here: https://community.secondlife.com/forums/topic/439384-tilia-takes-over/
[13:08] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: This only affects people with USD accounts, that process credits through them. If you use a credit card or similar to buy L$, there's no change.
[13:09] Emilly Orr: Through Tilia, or...? Because card purchases do accrue the fee now.
[13:10] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: In other words, people who keep a USD balance at LL
I'm still not sure, but to be honest, I haven't followed up, just engaged in a wait-and-see policy. Or watch-if-things-explode, is another way to put it.
[13:10] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Feds pestering LL again for potential of money laundering? BEcause this looks a lot like what banks have been doing to be able to do business in the USA
[13:10] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: I have no idea. the nice cat said, some business owners in SL are closing now because of this change.
[13:11] Emilly Orr nods.
So far, that I know of, Purplemoon Creations has closed, Carrie's Lingerie is closing, Ember Games (mentioned below) may have closed, and there's a few others I don't remember the names of offhand. Yes, it is true, stores close all the time, but some of these are big, established names.
[13:11] Emilly Orr: It's also going to affect Euro residents deeply, as Tilia will be demanding personally identifying information to verify the accounts.
[13:11] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: again, only if you keep a USD balance at LL, not if you only purchase L$ using a credit card
[13:12] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I wonder if any Eastern European oligarghs are in SL...
[13:12] Emilly Orr: Not true according to what I read of Tilia's terms of service.
[13:12] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: i.e. most residents, even European ones, will not be affected
[13:12] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: Tilia already handles L$ purchases by credit card for us
[13:12] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: If they convert Linden dollars to U$, they will be.
[13:12] Emilly Orr: "4. Your Tilia Account
4.1. Identity Authentication
If you use certain Tilia Services, federal and state law requires that Tilia verify your identity. This means that Tilia may require you to provide your name, street address, date of birth, social security number, and other information that will allow us to identify you. We may also ask to see a copy of your driver’s license or other documents at any time. You authorize Tilia, directly or through third parties, to make any inquiries we consider necessary to validate your identity and the information you provide. You may be required to provide confirmation of ownership of your email address or financial instruments or you may have to verify your information against third party databases or other sources. Tilia reserves the right to close, suspend, or limit access to your Account and/or the Tilia Services in the event we are unable to obtain or verify this information or your identity."
That does seem to indicate not only that individuals release personally identifying information, whether or not an individual keeps an extant cash balance in their accounts to be converted into local currency.
[13:12] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: well, I'm in the EU, but many friends are US-based, so it tangents we any way
[13:13] Emilly Orr: That's from their ToS: https://www.tilia-inc.com/legal/tos/
[13:13] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: "If you use certain Tilia Services"
[13:13] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: not ALL Tilia services
And admittedly, that is the point that remains unclear.
[13:13] Emilly Orr: As I understand it, asking for that level of information is now illegal to request from European citizens.
[13:13] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: That is going to make dealing with LL very complex. At least if one deals with money
[13:14] Emilly Orr: Yes.
[13:14] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: uh-oh.
[13:14] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: (apparently 'Tilia' is Latin word for 'Linden')
[13:14] Emilly Orr: It is.
[13:14] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: of course.
[13:15] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Banks have right to ask for personal information from their customers, even in Europe. LL is not equivalent to a bank so they are effectively assuming authority they do not have.
[13:15] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: wow.
[13:16] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: But this does seem like the old news about using SL to launder money. So if you are getting money out of SL, LL wants to know who you are.
[13:16] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: well, some governments are worried about Facebook's plan to introduce this new currency, but our Linden-Dollars are officially play-money
[13:17] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Since Linden Dollars can be converted to real money, that's basically rhetoric.
[13:17] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: yeah, but they made a TOS change about that years ago
[13:18] Emilly Orr: If it was just in response to Lindens being treated as real currency, they covered themselves on that score eight years back.
[13:18] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: You already cannot buy huge amounts of Linden Dollars at once to ensure you are not putting your drug money to SL to launder it.
That and general money laundering, yes. So if they're already legally protected--in at least two different directions--why launch an entire new company solely to handle money transfers from individuals to the Lab? It doesn't make practical sense. There's something else going on.
[13:21] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: I suspect those businesses who don't declare their SL income will want to pull their money out before August 1st.
Perhaps some businesses did. Perhaps others are transferring Lindens to friends who have no issues going through the process. And then closing their businesses and quietly leaving, or coming back on alts that have no intention to retail in SL.
[13:21] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx): is this about that new company that will handle lindens?
[13:22] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: Well, actually - they will handle Lindens to dollars and they're owned by LL. They're not a new company
[13:22] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: :sighs "basicly what happened is that a court ruled that electronic arts was a legal form of gambling..so of course, that aopplies to everywhere
I can't track down the actual ruling, so I'm not sure if that's more than a rumor, but I did track down this article which goes into the nature of the problem. How'ver, that's far and away from what's under discussion at present.
[13:22] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: They've been handling purchases of Lindens by non-US citizens for some time already.
[13:22] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: so we have loot boxes to thank
Maybe. Maybe not. The Lab already squelched both banks and open gambling in SL, what, a full decade back? So it's not that.
[13:22] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: I think it's a money laundering thing - as usual
[13:23] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: AGreeing with that
[13:23] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: how clean does money have too be?
[13:23] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: i.e. if you're cashing out L$ into USD, they want to know who you are
[13:23] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: well, as they as they do not demand the sort of id normally required for credit axccounts
Ah, but there's the hitch. Read passage four from the ToS again for Tilia. They have all and every plan to do exactly that.
[13:23] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: they will if you have a credit account, i.e. a USD balance with LL
[13:24] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: that means pretty much all business in SL, I would think
[13:24] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: businesses*
[13:24] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: so, when a SL business shuts down because of upcoming TOS change, they are afraid of revealing their identity?
[13:25] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: possibly - or they don't declare their SL income in their home country
[13:25] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: May be just a principle of the thing to them
[13:26] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: yes, if they're not earning that much it might not be worthwhile to them
[13:26] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I do remember that one Australian guy who made al his creations free of charge because he noticed that IRS wanted to tax him because the income was gained in the USA
[13:26] Emilly Orr: Or, they're just tired of being in SL, that happens too.
[13:26] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: and again, I think now that the courts are snooping into gaming, they want to have armopr
[13:26] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: granted, we are NOT ea, but
[13:26] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: EA=satan
Yes, but again, we're discussing Tilia specifically.
[13:26] Emilly Orr: And as far as I know, Tilia *is* a newly established company, formed precisely for this purpose.
[13:27] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: yes, the IRS like their share of anything they can persuade themselves is earned in the US - even if you're not a US citizen
[13:27] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: IIRC EA wants to monetize _everything_
[13:27] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: Emilly, Tilia EU has been processing my L$ purchases for some time now
[13:27] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: evenn if it makes people stay the hell away from theiur games
[13:27] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Yeah, the print-by-demand service Lulu had to apologize to their non-American customers who did not expect to be taxed in the USA: That includes some people I personally know here.
[13:28] Emilly Orr: Well, fair enough then, I just noticed it beginning this month. Before this, no charges marked Tilia were on my statements.
[13:28] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: With Amazon, you have to sign that you're not a US citizen AND that your income isn't generated on US-based servers, or something
[13:28] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: So if one lady I know sells a copy of her Finnish-language poetry collection she has to deal with IRS...
[13:29] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: wow
[13:29] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: well, that is because the us taxes people aboraid
[13:29] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: If you're in the US, you wouldn't have been aware of Tilia before
[13:29] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Dealing with the new print-by-demand ompany in Germany is not that complex...
[13:29] axxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: basicly as a futile attempt to go after the billionaires that stuff tax havens
[13:30] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: VistaPrint?
[13:30] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: The US taxes all US citizens, wherever they earn their money, and all non-US citizens who earn in the US - unless you can prove that you already pay at least an equivalent amount of tax in a country that has a double taxation agreement with the US
[13:31] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: ohoh
[13:31] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Yup
[13:31] Emilly Orr: Gad, VistaPrint is so awful, don't deal with them. They offset their custom work frequently, and their post-it notes don't stick.
[13:31] Ixxxxx Dxxxxxxx: If however you pay tax at 20% and the US would charge you 40%, you have to pay the 20% difference to the IRS
[13:31] Jxxxx Dxxxxxxx: sonofabiskits
[13:32] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I meant Books on Demand. Thought I have not used them myself
[13:32] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: https://www.bod.fi/
[13:32] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Books are printed in Germany
[13:33] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I heard about this because some members of the Finnish Science Fiction Writers have used them.
[13:33] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: ah
The same fellow sent me this link, which I believe leads to the same company.
[13:40] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: well, we can keep an eye on this topic, and I guess more information might get revealed later
[13:42] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: There may be some changes as well.
[13:43] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: btw
[13:43] Emilly Orr: Let's hope.
[13:43] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: No, i have no money to buy a way....
[13:43] Emilly Orr: To date, the Tilia website quoted doesn't exist, so I'm hoping it will spontaneously appear August 1st.
And I am sad to say I didn't check August 1st to see if that were true. It does now, though, and the initial blurb I read reading that makes it sound like Linden Lab is aiming for a larger section of the pie, so to speak--not just funding and exchange through Second Life, but funding and exchange through any virtual world setting.
[13:43] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: the fine cat also told me, a Jez Ember is giving up their business, and therefor giving away the table games for free, like Greedy
[13:44] Emilly Orr: Really? I'll have to tell friends who play.
[13:44] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: well, she told me so. I never played it myself, and this Jez Ember is not known to me
[13:44] Emilly Orr: That makes three I've heard of so far--PurpleMoon Creations, Carrie's Lingerie, and Ember Games.
[13:45] Emilly Orr: At least we know PurpleMoon is closing because the designer wants to stay at home with her new baby.
[13:47] Rxxxxxx Oxxxxxxx: one has to pay 1 L$ for a game, but it gets refunded. and one avatar can buy two games only
I didn't know about the limitations, but in case anyone's interested, here's Ember Games. I've never been one for card games in SL--the closest I got was the early days of sim-leveling mahjongg boards--but it might be nice to own the one or two allowed.

[Note from the Editrix: I intended to get this out two weeks ago. So...at this point, Ember may have already closed.] Bother.
[13:58] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Are they closing their Marketplace accounts as well?
[14:05] Emilly Orr: Carrie Bridger is leaving jewelry up on her marketplace, but no attire. PurpleMoon is leaving things up on her marketplace for now, but the designer has said she'll likely kill her MP when she formally finishes closing things down.
And then it hit on another front--a store group's Discord:
2:30 PM] Chloe: https://community.secondlife.com/blogs/entry/2577-important-changes-to-your-second-life-account-introducing-tilia/
2:31 PM] Chloe: more hoops to jump through for SL
[2:34 PM] Chloe: So anyone who cashes out - its the 7.5% plus whatever tilia will charge now too, plus paypal fees, plus submitting ALL your identification to tilia now and they can take up to 30 days to process stuff. With no warning again
[2:34 PM] Tia: umm so what happens if you just wanna buy lindens?
[2:35 PM] Chloe: Im guessing you would buy it through the tilia account it says is created for you automatically and I would assume they charge a service fee for that too cause apparently they havent been greedy enough yet
[2:35 PM] Tia: wow
[2:35 PM] Chloe: also it says if you dont use your tilia account in a 12 month period you get charged a fee for inactivity
[2:35 PM] Tia: it also says in the terms they can cancel tilla tokens without warning
[2:36 PM] Chloe: So if you have alt accounts and they get created tilia accounts please watch that to see if you can cancel them so youre not charged inactivity fees on alts
[2:37 PM] Chloe: Why does it feel like they are trying to completely destroy SL - it makes no sense when it probably makes them millions a year, like what genius is running things
[2:37 PM] Tia: they just wanna make more money
[2:37 PM] Tia: greedy
[2:37 PM] Chloe: you dont make more money that way, you do it in ways that dont piss off people when theres already a dying userbase
[2:38 PM] Chloe: you do things to help grow it so you get more money and things that actually make sense - like when someone suggested charging for partnerships a higher amount, that makes sense as its not something that would actually affect peoples lives in a big way
[2:39 PM] Tia: true
4:56 AM] Fr0zenHawk Chillsmoke: Just wanting to clarify some information I'm seeing posted: New fees will be 5% ($3 minimum) they've warned us about this fee increase for a while now. Time to process is expected to be the same as now, the 30 days is the just-in-case time on the outside. Just checking your balance counts as activity, and inactivity fees can't drain your account below 0.
(I'm not saying these are good changes, just wanting to prevent more panic over misinformation.

So now it's not going to be the already insane $1.49 to buy Lindens, but a full three dollars? Ridiculous.

I'd like verification on that, and I'll do better trying to find it.

the gnashing teeth and criminal tongues conspire against the odds

Telltale Games is apparently sending takedown orders to various digital storefronts, and this makes me insanely glad I already own a copy of The Wolf Among Us. But it is both confusing and hurtful, because there are a lot of really good Telltale games, that tie in to a lot of existing properties, from Minecraft to Borderlands. Yes, I know the company's going under, but...wouldn't their games remaining up and selling help them to pay any extant debts from the closure?

And meet Imma, a 100% virtual Instagram model. Pair that with the AI program that can now create entire photographically-real bodies that never existed, and I think we're entering an era where the best models, the best advertising actors, could easily be AI. Could actual actors be replaced with pure AI creations? Not entirely sure, at least, within the next ten years. If it's a still image, or even if it's a non-talking moving image, I think largely we'll buy it. If it's a moving, interactive, talking AI image, it may not work so well in places where we believe emotion--faked or actual--has to be part of the scene.

I think I walked in after everything was mostly over, sadly, but even the aftermath is kind of interesting:
[12:48] Kzzz Dxxxxxx: wow
[12:48] bxxxx Yxxxxxx: wow nothing
This was the part that convinced me something had gone down.
[12:48] Mxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Well more of us care than are bothered by it.
[12:48] bxxxx Yxxxxxx: unless you are talking bout
[group name][12:48] bxxxx Yxxxxxx: why annoy us with your boring convo
Okay, so I may have some hint now. For me, it depends on the group. If it's pretty strictly a sales group, and there is generally no non-event discussion in the group, then yeah, tempers will flare if, say, it's a weekend sales event, and mid-week someone brings up some dress she saw on sale in a store that isn't involved in the event. That, I get. Because in some group where the group's description says they're restricted only to advertising that event, discussing that event, say, then extraneous chatter is not wanted, nor needed, and will usually be stomped on by the mods.

But if the group is more open and allowing of chat, there shouldn't be a problem...usually.
[12:48] Mxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Why don't you go comb yourt hair with a weedeater
[12:49] bxxxx Yxxxxxx: lol good one
[12:49] Axxx Hxxxxxx: People are permitted to have polite civil nice conversations, be nice or leave.
Thus speaketh the mod.
[12:49] bxxxx Yxxxxxx: you got me
[12:49] gxxxxxxxxxx: [bxxxx] did your parents teach you to just walk away if you don not like something?
[12:49] Wxxxxx Vxxxx: seriously ? this is like 3rd person causing problems
Damn, I hate missing things.
[12:49] Wxxxxx Vxxxx: is it same one on alts?
[12:49] bxxxx Yxxxxxx: good one girls
[12:49] Emilly Orr: Oh darn, I missed drama. Ah, well.
[12:49] bxxxx Yxxxxxx: you got skills
[12:49] Hxxxxx Lxxxxxxxxxx: Maybe..
[12:49] mxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx closes annoying chat
That is also an option, if a passive-aggressive one. I generally don't announce I'm leaving the chat unless I'm REALLY upset. And even then, it's a passive-aggressive move.
[12:50] Hxxxxx Lxxxxxxxxxx: [Mxxxxxxxx] has brains! :)
[12:50] Ixxxxxxx Txxxxxxx: see that, it's an x button it closes the conversation if you dont want to read it.
Speaking of passive-aggressive...
[12:50] Hxxxxx Lxxxxxxxxxx: It's that easy.
[12:50] Kxxx Dxxxxxx: people can still talk about [group name]. we are not monopolizing the chat.
[12:50] Hxxxxx Lxxxxxxxxxx: We have been talking about [group name] for hours. Every now and then the convo changes.
[12:50] lxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: [12:49] Axxx Hxxxxxx: People are permitted to have polite civil nice conversations, be nice or leave.
[12:50] Ixxxxxxx Txxxxxxx: And we wouldn't ignore a question if it was asked about [group name] anyways
[12:51] Hxxxxx Lxxxxxxxxxx: Do I ever? :P
[12:51] sxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: not sure why some people get bothered by nice conversation
See above.
[12:51] Rxxxx Mxxxxx: it is a full moon tonight ? wassup with all the nastiness? they are having a simple convo, if it bothers you, close chat
[12:51] Hxxxxx Lxxxxxxxxxx: Because it makes their SL go DING! and the group window pop up.
[12:51] Kxxx Dxxxxxx: i think some folks are unhappy with themselves so they have a need to make others as miserable as they are
That's not the worst theory, actually. If people are in a bad place, it's easier to see things as negative.
[12:52] sxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: well you can ignore it or turn it off lol
[12:52] lxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: well there is really no need to keep it going
[12:52] sxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: true [kxxx]
[12:53] Kxxx Dxxxxxx: personally i prefer to build folks up. not rip them apart
Cliched, if correct. But it's a truism in comedy, as well--punch up, not down. In other words, don't hurt people below your social status, they have enough problems, and it just comes off as mean-spirited. Same with this, really--help people, don't hurt them out of spite. Harder to live, true, but worthwhile.

and the sky is all black and i think we should start running

She hadn't written a poem in some time, and one was teasing at the edges of her mind. Something about...loss, and..frustration, and...a confused sense of betrayal, maybe...that could never really be betrayal, because she was supposed to understand, right?

She didn't understand. She had great trouble understanding. But it proved impossible to articulate.

Still, the poem was teasing at her. Something about constructions that constrain. Something about chill constriction in the place of warm embrace. Something reflective of someone that can no longer be reflected.

Something about living in the bones of a dead love, being surrounded by that constant pain, unsure of whether staying was a better option (because even if painful, the emotions were true), than striking out and finding a new home (that would hold no memories, no personality, no...soul). A new home that would begin, and remain, empty and barren of all emotion and personality.

And then...the house was deleted. Not by her. She was more careful than she had ever been before with her own homes, because of the emotional weight of place. She checked and triple checked to ensure that every box she rezzed out was deleted, and only that box, not a stick, not a stitch, of the house surrounding.

But it was deleted nonetheless. It had disappeared into the ether where all dead things stay, never to return.

And now we are left with memories. And the shreds of what was. Is it better? Is it worse? I can't even tell.

All I know is, it's harder to breathe with the house gone, than with it existing.

my whole world rests on those tiny wings

So nearly a year ago, I wrote something which mentioned the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR. Jack wrote again--yes, that Jack--and told me that while referring to the official (at least, I thought official) GDPR link, but he told me he'd written a sort of "beginner's primer" to the GDPR. So, fine, I'm linking that, but I still don't think that goes far enough. Where in all of what was said on that 'beginner' link involves Article 11 and Article 13, which are, I thought, the deeply concerning sections? Or is that something else entirely, and I am misremembering what the GDPR is?

In the meantime, this was from a while back (I think during 2018's very hot summer), but I still think it's worth covering. Also, you should know, while this is anonymized as to actual people, I'm leaving in references to the estate, so...astute readers will be able to line up initials. Sorry about that, but...anyway.
[21:09] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: peeks in
[21:09] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: a little bit of (non Caledon) news, just as a public service
[21:09] Exxxxxx Yxxxxxxx pokes [Dxx] in the nose
[21:09] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: [Axxxxxx] tipped me off on this
[21:09] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: hey [Exxx]!
[21:10] Exxxxxx Yxxxxxxx: Hiya, Gov!
[21:10] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: turns out, Inworldz is in a bit of a struggle, they had paypal issues apparently
[21:10] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: InworldZ is closing
[21:10] Sxxxxx Gxxxxxx: there's been a lot of older accounts getting hacked and sending out phishing links to a bunch of random groups lately.
I'm not sure whether Mm. [Sxxxxx] was talking about InWorldz or here, but considering it's a huuuuge problem here, it probably was a problem there, too.
[21:10] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: for those who don't know, they are, well, they are trying to fight the closing is the last tidbit I heard
[21:10] Exxxxxx Yxxxxxxx: oof
Last I heard was that they had closed, I haven't heard anything since.
[21:10] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: that's on SL, [Sxxxxx]?
[21:10] Sxxxxx Gxxxxxx: yessir.
[21:11] Sxxxxx Gxxxxxx: seen it happen in 3 separate groups already
[21:11] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: wow.
[21:11] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: sad.
[21:11] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: anyway, long story short about inworldz, i know a LOT of Caledon people have land there
[21:11] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: and it may be 'make or break' for them in the next... I dunno, short period of time
[21:12] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: I do respect what they are doing there, considered it myself once (private grid) and would love to see them survive.
[21:12] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: long read
[21:12] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: if I remember correctly, that's what happened when they used paypal
[21:13] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: most of you know that I'm militantly 'anti paypal' even when tier is late by a resident
[21:13] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: this, precisely, is why
[21:13] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: well it was a loan company that they had been using then
[21:13] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: yes
[21:13] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: as I understand it, paypal bought that company
[21:13] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: the loan company got taken up by paypal
[21:14] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i've dealt with paypal as a (RL) merchant, credit card processor
[21:14] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: they are not to be trusted
I would tend to agree, but for people on my level of transactions, they're kind of the only game in town, so...I deal with the dysfunction.
[21:14] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: then things changed, imagine that
[21:15] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: yah, basically even the tiniest mistake or dispute goes in paypal's favour, as, guess who keeps your money when it gets 'locked up'?
[21:15] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: remember something, Pay-Pal started off great BUT then got eaten up by Ebay, uhoh, then Ebay spat it out
[21:16] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: and oddly it produced a lot of super rich people too
[21:16] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: so that tells me a lot of money was diverted
[21:16] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: so it is ebay tainted
[21:16] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i dont use them much, don't know
[21:17] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: I only use them to make small direct payments
[21:17] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: anyway, my main point I guess, the owner of inworldz is telling people to 'dispute' her or something so people can get their money out of paypal
Didn't hear if this worked, either. Personally, I don't think it did.
[21:17] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: if I understand it correctly
[21:18] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: probably best to check whatever the latest is, but, basically, there are people with 100's and 1000's invested in any online community
[21:18] Emilly Orr: So, with what you're saying, people will file disputes against the Inworldz owner, and if PayPal decides not to proceed, PayPal will keep the funds?
[21:19] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: let me check what the owner(?) of inworldz says about this, it's not my fight
[21:19] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: sec I'll get a link
[21:19] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: Paypal has a lien on Inworldz
[21:20] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i'm not sure what their current strategy is
[21:20] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: they aren't either
[21:20] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: just have to wait for more news
[21:21] Emilly Orr: Great.
[21:21] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: one thing I have perspective on, over 12 years...
[21:21] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: is that if the communities start dying out, it's bad for all the remaining ones.
[21:21] Emilly Orr nods
[21:22] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: there was a time (not these days tho!) I probably could have made a difference in something like this
[21:23] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: it's not uncommon, or at least it wasn't, for estates to kinda help each other out here and there
[21:24] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: for instance, Mr [Txxx] taking on Babbage basically saved the community (yes I know there were some others who would also have, of course)
There were, yes, but the plain fact was, Babbage as a sim was going to go away. There were several people who wanted it saved, and the owner was willing to sell, but had there not been that support, Babbage would have evaporated into digital mist, like so many other former realms.
[21:24] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: the other reason I'm mentioning this, sometimes, there are benefactors who can easily make a difference, who are online here
[21:25] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: in any case, the more buzz they get, the better chance they have at inworldz.
[21:27] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: if there's any demand for it, I can talk about Caledon + personal situation if anyone wants to hear (main summary, we are fine)
[21:28] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: hears crickets, so I'll let everyone get back to their evening :)
[21:28] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: Ahhh. Read the post from there this morning. Sounded like there wasn't any viability problem until the lender created one. Just the relatively common business practice of using short term loans to average out short term expense / income fluctuations.
[21:29] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: (Rubs his wings together)
[21:29] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: Hi [Dxx] :) I'd like to hear what you have to say on Caledon, and I'm very glad to hear that we are doing fine :)
[21:29] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: hai :)
[21:30] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: Hey :)
[21:30] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: tries to summarise... basically, I've not been on enough, which is partly why our occupancy is a bit lower than I'd like, even though we are still quite ok
[21:31] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: the plan is as follows: go around, be on more, keep updating commonwealth stuff, then re appraise where it's all at
[21:31] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: if occupancy is still falling off, I may have to make adjustments, but, eh. I'm so busy with RL biz, it's essentially cheaper for me to let a couple regions worth of land be open
[21:32] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: Always good to do an assessment, yes :) Provided RL cooperates (we all know that comes first)
[21:32] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: costs more time to adjust regions, than it's worth, and we are still in the black by some margin
[21:32] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: yay :)
[21:33] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: what's going on: biz is still in demand as ever, and, i'm in the process of buying a house RL, trying to figure out which one to make an offer on

He has since bought the house, though the patches of disconnect from the grid is still happening. He's doing what he can, but as he said, his RL consulting comes first, and has to. I think we all understand that.

[21:33] Txxxx Txxxxxxxxx: Don't let the Cat Girls distract you! You may miss the fine print.
[21:33] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: Oh congratulations!
[21:33] Txxxx Txxxxxxxxx: xD
[21:33] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: meaning, I'm packing up the current house, and it's over 100F outside all day, and not a lot cooler at night
[21:33] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: fine print? meow....
[21:34] Txxxx Txxxxxxxxx: xD Congrats. I just moved in 91 degree heat. I share the wealth. Hah.
[21:34] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i'm not leaving OC, which is complifying things of course
[21:34] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: yah way too hot for this.
[21:34] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: we have a famously bad real estate market
[21:35] Txxxx Txxxxxxxxx: I probably couldn't afford a house there as a teacher unless I sold a kidney.
[21:35] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: anyway that's the gist of it all, plus, I took a day for myself yesterday... went surfing at Trails
[21:36] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: yah it's a nasty market here... sigh. but, i've already got a house here so it's more of a trade kinda
[21:36] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: is bone tired as the waves had serrrrious power at trails
[21:37] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: not even that big, but wow what a push, i think it's the south swell
[21:37] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: which is why i wasnt on yesterday
[21:37] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: Good that you got some relaxation time, though :)
[21:37] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: that, and the classic 'yep i missed a few sunscreen spots' dorky tan
[21:37] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: Ouch.
[21:38] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: the plan is to stay alive a bit longer if possible, through cardio :)
[21:38] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: :D
[21:38] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: yah remember the ah, the 'bad guy' in the Avatar movie with the blue people?
[21:38] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: WHICH ONE?
[21:38] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: he had claw marks on his face kinda?
[21:38] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: the... heh yea
[21:38] Cxxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: oh that one
[21:38] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: the really aggressive one
[21:39] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: well guess what happens if you sorta forget to finish one side of your face...
[21:39] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: oopsie.
[21:39] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: you get a sunburn pattern like that.
[21:40] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i'm sort of a walking ad for Monster energy drink :(
Could be worse.
[21:40] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: awwww, ouch
[21:40] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: I hope you have some aloe
[21:40] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i do
[21:41] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i feel guilty taking leaves off it tho
[21:41] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: awesome then, the burned skin really drinks that up :)
[21:41] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: it's not the plant's fault i was stupid
[21:41] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: yes :)
[21:41] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: they grow back, think of it like getting a hair cut for the plant :)
[21:41] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: aloe has strangely thick leafs
[21:41] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: yups
[21:41] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i feel bad, it's not like just picking off a maple leaf
[21:42] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: dew eet
[21:42] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: hehe
[21:42] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: :D
[21:42] Emilly Orr: It'll grow back. Succulents are forgiving.
[21:42] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: then you got to slice it up to get the goup to come out
[21:42] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i've been abusing this one for a long time
[21:42] Emilly Orr: Or split the leaf. Either way works.
[21:43] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: it's probably screaming to the Avatar spiritual thingie by now, and pointing a finger at me
[21:44] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: lol
[21:45] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: I'd chance it, sunburn on my Irish skin is no joke :)
[21:45] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: yah it doesn't take long... and this was down by the san onofre nuclear reactor
[21:46] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: yikes
[21:46] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i have thought of an art project I'd like to do, if ever I became an artist
[21:46] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: what's that?
[21:46] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: the san onofre power plant has a very distinctive appearance
[21:46] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: lol yes it does lol
[21:46] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: let me find a picture...
[21:46] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: I know it well
[21:47] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: that's for anyone who has never seen it
[21:47] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: heh
[21:48] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: it's a verrry distinctive shape.
[21:48] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: my art project would be as follows:
[21:48] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: quite a landmark
[21:48] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: two VERY LARGE cloth triangles, one covering each dome.
[21:49] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i would leave it to the viewer's interpretation
[21:49] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx chuckles
[21:50] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: not stretched too tightly, and absolutely covering the tops.
[21:50] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: A coat of paint wouldn't hurt either.
[21:50] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: heh
[21:50] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: i'd call it: Welcome To California
[21:50] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: T-shirt triangles with a bit of padding?
[21:51] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: the domes would supply all the padding necessary
[21:53] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: The title is great :)
[21:53] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: Something one actually could do in augmented reality..
[21:53] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: indeed! looks balefully at his old project computer for that.
[21:57] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: (deals with a RL distraction) ~ I've got to log, but by all means, if anyone can gather help for Inworldz, spread the word.
[21:57] Zxxxx Exxxxxxx: Take care, [Dxx]
[21:57] Dxxxxxx Sxxxx: ^^
[21:57] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: Journey well.
That was it, and I probably left in too much beyond the actual InWorldz coverage, but hey. For what it's worth, there you go. If anyone knows anything else, let me know.

31 January, 2019

oh my god, I see how everything is torn in the river deep

Something fairly creepy happened tonight--I wanted to take some casual shots of an outfit, and remembered there was a land connected to ShenaniganS that might work, so I ported there with the express purpose of crossing back into that forest. Only...there didn't seem to be anything there.

Oh, the music club was still there, but everywhere the club wasn't, all the surrounding land, had been dropped by a good ten meters and was now bare sand.

In the above image, just to give you an idea of what I was seeing, I am the miniscule figure in red in the extreme lower left, and in the upper left, nearly in the left corner, is a reddish barn bedecked in lights, surrounded by greenery. That's ShenaniganS.

While I was trying to figure out what had happened, I must have passed an inviter, and a group dropdown--I thought--popped up, so I closed it, then Annie chatted me up:
[22:23] Annie (shenannyannie): Hello Emilly - Music Lands is a group for venues that play great music by DJ's or with Live Performers. You'll get news of events daily from several venues and it will save you a few group slots.
Annie's name is left unanonymized for reasons that will become clear.
[22:24] Emilly Orr: Do you know what happened to the rest of the land? I think the Forest of Astray?
As it turns out, I was wrong--the Forest of Astray is a different sim, though also very pretty.
[22:24] Annie (shenannyannie): What was that?
[22:25] Emilly Orr: There used to be a forested sim connected to Shenanigans. Do you know what happened to it?
[22:25] Annie (shenannyannie): Sorry, what was that?
That's when I figured it out.
[22:25] Emilly Orr: Oh, you're a bot?
[22:25] Annie (shenannyannie): That's me. I chat, therefore I am.
[22:25] Emilly Orr: Well, drat. Thanks for your help.
[22:25] Annie (shenannyannie): It's my pleasure to help.
I admit, this one threw me--usually I can identify bots pretty well, or at least, independent AI constructs. But the first time we spoke, back on January 10th, I didn't pick up on it.
[2019/01/10 23:35] Annie (shenannyannie): Hello Emilly - Music Lands is a group for venues that play great music by DJ's or with Live Performers. You'll get news of events daily from several venues and it will save you a few group slots.
[2019/01/10 23:36] Emilly Orr: Oh, thanks! Mostly doing a photo project, but I do like the look of the place.
I was talking about both the forest lands connected to Shenanigan's, and the beach chairs that used to be in front of the club, thinking they were connected to the club itself.
[2019/01/10 23:36] Annie (shenannyannie): Like you should be on a magazine cover.
[2019/01/10 23:36] Emilly Orr smiles.
[2019/01/10 23:36] Annie (shenannyannie): Say that one more time?
[2019/01/10 23:36] Emilly Orr: It's fine. Just exploring, mainly.
[2019/01/10 23:36] Annie (shenannyannie): Agreed!
I just thought she was odd, or not a native English speaker, and had finished the photos I needed for that project, so I went on with things. Very odd, though, the entire encounter tonight.

This was in the forested area, up in some ruins. You can see light-bedecked trees behind the stone archway to the side.

And this was near where the port-in point was. The path leading up from the pier, and all the flowers, led to the ruins.

I don't think I spent enough time in this spot to really resonate with it, but it was pretty, and very natural. For that, if nothing else, it will be missed.

come on, it's lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you

A social friend decided I needed to go on a sleigh ride. The first place he found, their sleigh was broken, but the one on North Pole's sim was active, so off we went.

It was a crisp, beautiful winter day, and amusingly enough, sitting in the sleigh delivered me a (full perm, of all things!) blanket that arrived pre-tucked around my legs, and a cup of hot cocoa to imbibe as we moved through the well-worn tracks.

Some of the visuals along the track were very realistic--drifting snow, winter trees, expected winter scenery--and some were fantastical and surreal, like this tunnel made of ice, followed by a grouping of crystalline, brightly-colored deer forms.

Some of the visuals were also very quaint, and traditional in that sense--like this village made of peppermint candy and canes.

The one major moment of copyright violation I noticed, and while it is undeniable, it also fits in very well, so could it simply count as homage? A portion of the ride travels alongside the North Pole Express.

A lovely trip through a wooden covered bridge, painted very traditionally brick red.

Pulling into the end village, where there is a small, open chalet with a fireplace and more cocoa to warm up.

And this is near where the ride stopped, and believe me, I didn't cover even a third of everything a visitor will see along the ride. (The 'stores in SL' tag is also on this entry because, in addition to the small open chalet, visitors will find several small shops in the village to purchase various holiday decorations and trees.)

This comes highly recommended. I was thoroughly charmed, and I may well visit again.

over my path your song casts a light

Breathe. Recenter. Ground and stabilize. Find the foundation. Get knocked off it again.

Pattern of a life.

I should be used to this by now. This is what happens. I should be taking this in stride. I'm not.

But what I have done is, spend time yesterday working on holiday card concepts. And, tomorrow or the next day, I'll write the RL year's holiday letter.

There will be breathing. There will be grounding. I will find my center and do my best to hold it. I will hold the bright light in the darkness until Yule's early blue morning. I am making plans for the days to come, and they will involve laughter and feasting and joyous things, even if quieter ones.

But ultimately, I get through this. We get through this. Because it's what I do, it's what my family has ingrained in me, and while there were many bad lessons in growing up, that was one of the good ones.

Move forward. Move on. Tend to the wounds, feed the body, feed the spirit. Never stop moving. Endure. Survive.

I have plans to do that.

take a look around you, it's easy not to see

Clearing out email this morning, and I find I still cannot get over this one, so...I'm putting it on the blog.

Out of the blue on November 16th, I got this:
Hey there,

My Name is Jack Foster and I blog over at VPN Geeks (we review and compare VPN providers).

I really like your blog and noticed that you accept guest posts and wondered if you’d be open to accepting one from me.

If so please let me know and I will send you several suggested topics that you may like. (If you have a topic you'd really like me to cover just let me know)

You can see an example of the type of content I publish at https://www.vpngeeks.com/21-terrifying-cyber-crime-statistics-in-2018

We'd also share it across our social channels :)

Regards,

Jack
At the time, for reasons I go into in my answer, I didn't reply. I don't always respond to completely unsolicited offers that seem to have no relation to my blog. Life moved on. Then I got this November 20th:
Hey there,

One week ago I sent you an email regarding guest post opportunity (copy of email below) and I haven’t yet heard back from anyone.

I would still love to write a guest article for your website.

You can see an example of the type of content I publish at https://www.vpngeeks.com/21-terrifying-cyber-crime-statistics-in-2018

Regards,

Jack
By my account that's four days, not a week, but that may be me being overly picky? I'm not sure. But I decided to respond:
Jack, it's been kind of a rough week. Our bathroom is being remodeled, because we could not longer use it in its current state, and considering it's management deciding what to do and not us, it's gone about as well as you might expect. Compound that with the fact that on both emails to me, you seemed to acknowledge that I do guest posts, and in the second one, said you hadn't heard back from 'anyone'.

I'm the anyone. It's just me. I'm the only writer on my blog. I do not allow guest posts.

But, because you asked, I did look. The article you linked is about 50% graphics only, and mostly easily findable, recyclable information. Your name wasn't linked at the top of the article, so, after I finished reading it, and found it at the bottom, I checked out the other posts you'd written for VPN. I found...three other articles.
Since sending that, he's apparently now written more than those three, which is good, but still doesn't break him out of that very narrow scope of writing only about data privacy and VPNs in general.
Dude, I get you're hungry, but have you read *anything* on my blog? At all? Anything. One article, even. For the past year (because I don't think you have), I've mostly covered conversations from Second Life, which is pretty much my MMO of choice. I do cover a little bit on emergent technology, some on virtual fashon, and every October, I do huge coverage on virtual haunts in SL.

So, while I do have a slight interest in cybercrime, bitchain technology, and electronic privacy and freedoms...which blog entry gave you the idea that this is my sole focus?

Just to tie this up, in case you're thinking along these lines, I do not allow advertising either. The few square banners I carry in the sidebar *I* choose to put there. I don't get paid a dime. I do have my Ko-Fi banner up on the blog, and on my Twitter--that hasn't netted me a single dime, either. Would I love to be paid for what I do? Sure, because I'm disabled and unemployed. But *do* I get paid? No, and I don't solicit for ads, either.

So, after reading through *this*, if you still think a guest post from you would fit on my blog, I'll be tolerant towards considering it, but it would be the *only* guest post for probably the *next* ten years, because...it's my blog. I do the writing.

Cheers,

Em
I don't think it's necessary to mention that Jack hasn't written back, but just for completion's sake, he hasn't written back. Guess he figured out my blog is not really keyed in to his limited and narrow scope. I mean, good luck to him, but it was just a strange exchange to begin with. And I still don't know what gave him the idea that I'm VPN and bitchain central. I think I've mentioned VIPNs all of twice, and bitchain tech, in particular Bitcoin, maybe...once? So it's just completely baffling.

I wish him the best, but I won't be at all surprised if I never hear from him again.

The battle of the wills you live

Today's chat is brought to you by...inventory sorting?
[09:46] Kxxxxxxx Pxxxxxxx: So. Does anyone have any "quick and easy" inventory sorting tricks? I'm working on a tutorial, and know I'm probably missing something. (You will, of course, be credited.)
[09:47] Vxxxxx Kxxxx: you never took Rowan's inventory class?
[09:47] oxxxx Rxxxxxxx: delete all
[09:47] Emilly Orr: Effective, but kind of scorched-earth.
[09:48] jxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I do it in stages myself
[09:48] Ixxxxx Sxxxx: [Kxxxxxxx] i'm afraid it will never be quick and easy :)
[09:48] Rxxxxxxxx Rxxxx: throw away all Thank you notes, all pose pads but one, all double LM, all layers you do not use
[09:48] Jxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Honestly I straight up used the inv filter for a certain date, like more than 4 years old, and literally deleted all of a certain type. Got rid of a ton and haven't missed anything
[09:49] Ixxxxx Sxxxx: Jess me as well, folder per folder when i feel like it (and as [Rxxx] says, no lm's no notecards)
[09:49] Axxxxx Lxxxxxxxx: throw away nearly all LMs. Store locations change and most are no longer valid anyway
This is a tip I keep forgetting about, and I really should start to employ again. Keep landmarks for places I go to often, places I want to remember the business name for, homes of friends, and...ditch EVERYTHING else. Treat landmarks like I treat unpacker scripts--once you have one, ditch all the others.
[09:49] jxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: unbox everything from my objects folder and received.first
[09:50] jxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: then move to the general inventory area where I sort them into general folders and unbox any that were sent to that area boxed.
[09:50] Kxxxxxxx Pxxxxxxx:
[09:50] Sxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: Make sure to delete all demos.
[09:50] jxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I also keep the boxes of things and delete the sizes I do not use.
[09:50] Kxxxxxxx Pxxxxxxx: You all rock, thank you
[09:51] Vxxxxx Kxxxx: what happens to the working demos?
[09:51] jxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: then when got everything into general folders I sort into subfolders. and sometimes even the subfolders have subfolders.
[09:51] Sxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: Working demos? Either I buy it or I don't like it. It still gets deleted.
[09:52] jxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I need to get all the lms up into the lm folder and delete the old and duplicate ones.
[09:53] Kxxxxxxx Pxxxxxxx: Oh, it won't ever be "quick and easy." xD I'm also doing the "in depth" tutorial, but having a "quick tricks" to just do a little at a time
[09:54] Hxxxxx Pxxx: But what if you decide to change bodies?
[09:54] jxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: yeah what I was saying about I might spend 10 minutes here 10 minutes there working on it until it adds up.
[09:55] Vxxxxx Kxxxx: people try to do it hours on hours and get burned out quickly
[09:55] Sxxxxx Fxxxxxxx: Also, I make a habit of every year (or so) I go into inventory under filter: Custom, at the bottom, I put "older than" 730 days. If I can't remember the last time I wore it or can't think of a time I would wear it again, I delete it.
[09:55] jxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: depends on two factors. do I have a box of the item to unbox for other sizes? if so delete that item and maybe get the other size. if not and it doesn't have the new size throw it in my backup folder.
[09:55] Vxxxxx Kxxxx: just like a school hour take those breaks
[09:56] jxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: indeed breaks are needed.
And then I had to leave, but there are some good tips here, some I may even employ for my eternal quest for an organized inventory.

and I think it's gonna be a long long time, 'til touch down brings me round again to find

This is going to be anonymized, as per usual, but because it's openly from Caledon chat, curious sorts may be able to add up the X's and come to correct conclusions. I can't help that, I thought it was more of value to post it.
[13:03] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: May i ask a question of you. When we were looking for rentals in Caledon we just went from sim to sim. Is there an actual rental office?
Near as I know, from my years of involvement, there has never been a rental office with the actual plots for rent. To be fair, such a thing is a common practice on other estates; I went to the sim's rental office both to scan plots available and to rent on behalf of Gearhaven when I rented a parcel in New Babbage, and when dealing with both mainland and island estates elsewhere, there have been actual offices with parcels or plots for rent.

But, to Des' credit, in Rosehaven-once-Winterfell, I rented two conjoined parcels, then later the Duke of Gearhaven rented a third across the river from the first two, that were all 'found' via discussion with the Princess. And when it was still Winterfell, I rented, in turn, three separate parcels, one after another, from the Empress, so...not every sim that offers resident rentals operates with the rental office model.
[13:03] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: no, but talk to [Jxxxx]
Keeping with my usual practice of bolding moderators in chat groups, and, in this case, estate managers or owners of sims.
[13:03] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: No, there is no rental office. However, you may want to contact [Mxxx Mxxxxxxx], who takes care of it for Desmond Shang. [Jxxxx] is not available at the moment.
[13:04] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: we found a place. and we have spoken to [Jxxxx]. He sorted out our land for us. Took a lot to figure out who to ask though. Is a bit secret society lol
[13:05] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: more laid back than secret
I would agree, but to be fair, I understand Ms. B's point, too. It's not as easy as finding a box, paying the box, and clicking a group invite board, to get land in Caledon. There used to be long waiting lists. Even now, when there is less demand, it is far from an instantaneous process. It can take up to 72 real-time hours in a good week to go from desiring a parcel, to getting it set in one's name and ready for building. And that's always been the way Caledon operates.
[13:05] PPxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Des used to do a lot of this himself, but he changed jobs and is working very long hours, so he delegated a little.
[13:05] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: if we are a secret society, no one has told me
[13:06] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: gathered that. Perhaps in the info offices there could be information on who to contact for rental issues, land deeding etc. Just a suggestion
This is not a terrible idea she's proposing. I honestly don't know how it would work, as Des or an EM must be on site to transfer parcels, so they are bound to officers with specific clearances. Changing that system to something that could be managed by rental boxes would be...problematic at best, and violently chaotic at worst.
[13:07] Emilly Orr: It is less secretive than just...things slip through the cracks. There was someone who was handling rentals full-time, I think RL claimed her back for a bit; then [Jxxxx]; [Mxxx]'s likely been doing land management and contacts for some time, but first I heard of it was today, so I am out of the loop.
[13:08] Jxxxxx Zxxx: The secret instructions are posted on the wall, in the Lecture Hall.
This may or may not be in jest, but to be fair, I'd have to go look to make sure. If they are, in fact, posted in the Lecture Hall, then that means the instructions on how to rent in Caledon, as well as the text of the full Caledon covenant (which I know is somewhere in Oxbridge, I have seen it in person), as well as other information on individual sims, are all available somewhere in Oxbridge Village. So it's far from secret and arcane.
[13:08] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx needs to see if they are updated
[13:08] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: And perhaps a group joiner when you rent. That would be helpful. Just my 2 cents for what it is worth
Again, Caledon is not an open group, and I truly think this is not going to change. Would it be easier to make Caledon an open group, not bound to an invite system? Sure. But with it bound to invites only, this ensures that the only people in the Independent States of Caledon group have some level of investment in Caledon. That makes sense, doesn't it?
[13:08] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx hums... the words of the prophet were written on the subway wall...
[13:09] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx rechecks his spectacles to look at the secrets.
[13:09] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: We used to have a class on What to Do in Caledon that ended with everyone in the class becoming Caledonian if they wanted, but the professor who taught that has left SL.
That might be a good class to restart.
[13:09] Dxxxx Wxxxxx hums... and tenement halls...
[13:10] Emilly Orr: You know, that is a good point. Des offered me group membership before I ever rented, because I'd shown up at several dances. I never thought to ask.
[13:10] Dxxxxxxxxxxxxx Exxxx: Hey how hard would it be to include a rental reference in the covenant of each sim?
Probably fairly easy, once it was in print, as t'were. But now? Each listing would have to be updated by hand, that would be a crushing amount of work.
[13:10] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Since then, any peer of Caledon can offer you membership
Admittedly, I did not know this. Good to know.
[13:10] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: you need the magic monacle, I think, Mr. [Sxxxxxxx]
[13:10] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx still likes to original Simon and Garfunkel
[13:10] Dxxxx Wxxxxx checks her covenant
[13:10] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: If anyone who has rented would like to become part of Independent State of Caledon, please say so and I will send an invitation.
Of course, she's asking in a group which is invite-only, about members who are not currently in the invite-only group, but...thanks for the offer?
[13:11] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: Please see Caledon's covenant in the region: "Caledon Oxbridge"
[13:11] Dxxxxxxxxxxxxx Exxxx: me, me, I would!!
[13:11] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: exactly [Dxxxxxxxxxxxxx]
[13:11] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: that's what Kitti says
[13:11] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: [DME], you've been here longer than I have.
[13:11] exxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Well, this is the ISC group...
[13:11] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Yes [Pxxxxxx]. but you have to be able to know who those peers are
[13:11] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: can't put anything past you, Mr. [Sxxxxxxx]
[13:12] Dxxxxxxxxxxxxx Exxxx: darn, I'm so old the trees are new
[13:12] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: :-)
[13:12] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: just as an outsider I see a couple of things that in my opnion could be better
I think the phrase you're searching for, Ms. B, is "more efficient". It would definitely be more efficient, and even easier, but would it be "better"? I'm not sure. I'm offering the suggestion only to a wider audience.

Also, if someone one is physically looking at is wearing the correct ISC group tag, it will say "Peer" if they are a member of the group. So it's less knowing who to ask as much as it is just finding a group member.

[13:12] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Mrs. [Bxxxxx], I sent an invitation, but it says you're already a Caledonian
[13:12] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: which means you are not an outsider.
[13:12] Dxxxxxxxxxxxxx Exxxx: ...as evidenced by this conversation
[13:12] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: yes. only took 3 weeks and many messages to Des
See above mentions of massive overwork. He tries, he tries hard, but he's only one estate owner with a lot of estatess.
[13:13] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Or you could come to Oxbridge and ask
Which is actually fairly well-advertised, in Oxbridge itself, in Victoria City, in the Guvnah's Mansion, and over countless Linden-owned and citizen-owned forums and discussion boards.
[13:13] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: We are there to answer questions and attempt to solve problems.
[13:13] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Yes [Pxxxxxx]. My point is who do you ask?
[13:13] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Me.
[13:13] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: well before today I never heard of you
And again, this isn't an unfair point. Who do you ask about land information in a place that doesn't operate by expected rules? She came in knowing only larger estates with land offices, or those places where one ports just to look a plot over and suddenly receives an IM out of the blue, or is descended upon by some rapacious sales agent who will willingly SHOW YOU EVERYTHING JUST RENT RIGHT NOW YES RIGHT NOW YES--

(Yes, this has happened when I've rented places, especially on mainland, or even just been looking. Or, 70% of the time, just ported to a place a store used to be that no longer exists.)
[13:14] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: You haven't been to Oxbridge, then.
[13:14] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: you have to be in the group to find people
She's not wrong.
[13:14] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I have yes. many times
[13:14] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: anyways just my opinion. There should be info when you rent as to who to contact. There is only Des and he does not answer
[13:15] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: Back to the reference to "Please see Caledon's covenant in the region: 'Caledon Oxbridge'"
[13:15] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: As I was saying, if you want to know something and don't know who to ask, come to Oxbridge.
[13:15] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: Where would one look in Caledon Oxbridge?
[13:15] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: In the Hall of Caledon
[13:15] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: exactly [Dxxxx]
[13:15] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: th Plaza, fo anyone with a staff group tag
[13:15] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: perhaps that could be more clear - maybe a URL would be helpful
[13:15] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: We have tutors, assistant deans and deans.
[13:16] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: all of whom can be helpful to visitors.
[13:16] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: we are pathologically helpful
[13:16] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: well the times I have been at Oxbridge I have not seen anyone that is wearing a tag
This surprises me, unless she happened to go at such obscure, strange times that literally no dean or advisor was awake. Personally, I have never--quite literally meant--gone to Oxbridge without seeing at least one Oxbridge dean, advisor, or assistant tag. But then, my times are SLT, so...that may be why?
[13:16] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: yes, but someone not familiar may not know that... I do see Mrs. [Bxxxx]'s point.
[13:17] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I do not see a solution to anything coming out of this raising of ire, though.
[13:17] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: having rented in many other sims, you rent, get a group tag, get the land deeded, have contact names etc etc. I just think the system needs tweakign for newcomers
[13:17] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: not Oxbridge Tutor? Oxbridge Dean? COU Assistant Dean, Mrs [Bxxx]?
[13:17] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: nope [Txxxx]
[13:17] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: ok
[13:17] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: perhaps it is the times I was there
[13:17] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: yes, could be
[13:18] Emilly Orr: Now, wait. Des does answer. But understand, there's only one of him and several entire sims of us. He will answer when he has time, which is, some weeks, in very short supply.
[13:18] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Caledon is lovely.
[13:18] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I get that Emily. but when you try and rent and all contact goes unanswered then there needs to be a second person to contact. and that should be on the rental info
Is this a viable solution to the problem, though? Because, at the heart of it, while Des most definitely wants Caledon to survive, and thrive if it is able, he does not want another bout of heedless expansion that will destroy the nature of the place. Perhaps setting these limits is one way of making sure that those who are only interested in instant gratification move somewhere else.
[13:18] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Just trying to make suggestions so it is easier for newcomers
[13:19] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: anyways. Caledon is lovely. and love living here. Byeee
[13:19] Emilly Orr: Oh, I understand, and you are right, Caledon does do things in a very different way from...well, everyone I've ever dealt with.
[13:19] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: uhm
[13:19] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: In the past there has been more than one person to contact :3
[13:20] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: it would help if all contacts were on rental info.
[13:20] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: whether or not they still are EMS....
[13:20] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: we are still waiting on land to be deeded
[13:21] Emilly Orr: To be fair, there's never been an official list of who is and isn't an EM. It's just sort of ...known.
[13:21] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I get that Emily. But as a newcomer there is no known
True, but maybe that's also part of the culture of Caledon. Some things are acquired directly--land, titles, group membership. Other things are more gathered by osmosis--the history, the running jokes, the forms of address, the ways in which information is exchanged, taught, debated, understood. Again, much of this is not instantaneous, and I don't think it should be.
[13:21] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Mr. [Sxxxxxx] used to be one..
[13:21] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I have no idea if he still is though.
[13:22] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: look do not get me wrong as we love it here at Caledon. Finally found the part of SL I have been looking for. I hate those beach sims etc
[13:22] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: He is an EM for part of Caledon.
[13:22] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: [Jxxxx] is Regent, he has the same access as Des... but he is not around right now
[13:22] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: but I just think some newcomer friendly stuff would help
[13:22] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I agree [Txxxx]. Hes always been quick at getting back to me with land info though
[13:22] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: can we accept that we have not done as well as we could here, and that the Powers that Be in Caledon have heard, or will be told shortly?
[13:23] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: we do seem to be going over the same stuff again and again
[13:23] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx nods.
[13:23] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I never disagreed.
[13:24] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: And, Oxbridge is not Caledon itself. It is run independently and pays its own tier.
[13:24] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: was trying to point out people who may be able to assist Mrs. [Bxxxxx] quicker
[13:24] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: I can accept that the issue has been raised, [Txxxx]
[13:24] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: ty
[13:24] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: [Mxxx] was a good suggestion.
[13:24] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: not trying to stir trouble. Just looking in from the outside
[13:24] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: perhaps a list of people at each info point?
[13:25] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: Info point?
She's either talking rental offices again, or a central, controlled port-in point--which, to be fair, some sims have, and information on larger Caledon events have been posted there. She's saying perhaps another board with a list of current EMs to contact in case of questions or issues, and I suppose that could work, but again, it's taking up prim space on what is usually very small, usually round parcels of community land.
[13:25] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: on a a couple of the sims I have found what looks like an info office
[13:26] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: More a landing point, I believe.
[13:26] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: or cake sales point
[13:26] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: cake sale? nice
[13:27] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: we believe in freedom and cake, I think... some other stuff too
[13:28] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Mrs. [Bxxxxx], did you need a list or is everything all good?
[13:29] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: The older sims are hubbed -- landing points. Not all have them.
This is true.
[13:29] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: The is no list of EMs for each sim, because not all EMs want to be publicly known and a few are unlikely to even be in SL these days. Any effort in that direction is not encouraged.
This is also true. And it is their right to remain anonymous to the populace at large. Des honors that choice.
[13:29] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: we know how to contact [Jxxxx]. So that will be ok. All we need now is someone to deed land
[13:29] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: ah.
[13:30] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Des, [Jxxxx] and [Mxxx], best bet is [Mxxx] right now
[13:30] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx nods.
[13:30] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: Which would likely be [Jxxxx] when here (but not right now), [Mxxx Mxxxxxxx], or [Kxxxxxx Hxxxxxxx].
[13:30] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: ok thanks. making note of the names
[13:30] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: I just yell in ISC when I need assistance - there is almost always someone there to help.
[13:30] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: [Kxxxxxx] was the other one I was thinking of.
[13:31] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Perhaps instead of trying to ask to be added to the Caldeon group it could just have a joiner button?
No, because it's invite-only, and quite likely to remain so.
[13:31] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: [Jxxxx] is on travel and not likely to be in this week.
[13:31] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: that would be easier
[13:31] Jxxxxx Zxxx: Like the on on the wall behind me?
If there is a group join board for ISC at Oxbridge, that's news to me. I thought it was still invite-only.
[13:32] Wxxxxxxxx Jxxxxxxx: It also would make it harder to control. No joiner button is likely.
[13:32] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: that would be the Caledon Oxbridge University Group, but actually a good pace to ask
Ah, okay, makes more sense. The Caledon Oxbridge group is open-join.
[13:32] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: seems i have stirred debate
[13:32] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx giggles.
[13:32] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: or perhaps food for thought
[13:33] Pxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Caledon has its own culture, and for that reason was set up to allow time for people to see if they are comfortable here before becoming members.
[13:33] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: as a lot of the 3000 members are also in ISC
[13:33] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Nothing better on a rainy and cool afternoon than a debate, Mrs. [Bxxxx] :)
[13:33] Dxxxx Wxxxxx: ... while sipping tea
[13:33] nxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx smiles... very rainy in Wales, but then it always is
There began a short diversion into global weather, which I chose to excise, as this is already going to be long enough on its own.
[13:36] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: oh and for the record I speak only for myself. My Sl partners opinions are his own. As are mine
More commentary on rain that I'm deleting for length.
[13:56] bxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Anyways thanks to you all. Have a lovely evening
Conversation returned to ISC "normal" at that point, which is to say, all over the place...but Ms. B does have several points, and good ones. It's not a way Caledon has ever behaved, and there have been reasonable and historic reasons why, but I do wonder if it would somehow benefit Caledon as a whole to behave--at least a little--like other sims on the grid.

On the heels of that, just a bit of random weirdness from another rental announcement:

[14:01] jxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: i have a small announcement... more like a tease.... for some that may be interested... although im not giving out any details as of yet
[14:02] Jxxx Sxxxxxxxx: Then house is that an announcement or tease!
[14:02] Mxxxx Sxxxxxxx puts the flame thrower down, "Go on...."
[14:02] Jxxx Sxxxxxxxx: Something is coming!
[14:02] jxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Rentals are coming
[14:02] Fxxx Jxxxxx: 'I am Ironman!'
[14:02] Emilly Orr blinks. "Rentals?"
[14:02] Jxxx Sxxxxxxxx flails
[14:03] Emilly Orr: Rentals with tentacles!
[14:03] Mxxxx Sxxxxxxx: Oooo
[14:03] Jxxx Sxxxxxxxx: Tentarentals?
[14:03] Pxxxxxx Exxxx: wat
[14:03] Jxxx Sxxxxxxxx: Rentacles?
[14:03] Emilly Orr: Rentacles!
[14:03] Emilly Orr cackles
I just had to, yes. It amused me.

heart full of blues, space and time

While I decide if it's too late to back-date posts that contain the last of the Hair Fair pics, I got hit with this when I was listening...
