let me open my teeth and cradle you there

RL Dolcett, anyone? Ergh.

Back on the 3rd, I spoke on a viewer controversy that's been brewing for some time. Earlier (as in, I past-dated it so it could be boring back in January), I linked Kirsten's initial EULA and credits in full. This had to be agreed to before I even downloaded the viewer. The CoolVL viewer was just a simple install, nothing overly complicated about it.

Then I opened each viewer in turn, on the grid.

(from the bizarre album)

The first thing "Blackbird" told me was that my outfit didn't exist. Which was strange to me, as I could clearly see my outfit, and it was the same one I'd been wearing the last time I logged in with Singularity. Odd.

Then I went looking for the 'About' tab. It's not under Help, first of all; it's under the 'S19' tab itself:

(from the bizarre album)

Henri is correct, no specific authors are listed other than KirstenLee Cinquetti under this tab.

(from the bizarre album)

How'ver, under the 'Licenses & Copyrights' tab, there's this. Which looks fairly official with all bases covered, to me. Unless Henri is claiming that he, himself, coded his viewer entirely by hand, with no help from any other code source, what Kirsten seems to have done is credit the original (hence, first) coder for purposes of licensing--then left off anyone else who might have had a hand in redoing the code, either in sections or in whole.

There's a further point at the bottom of that tab, to see "licenses.txt" for more information, but I can't seem to find that anywhere within the program files.

I had no warning that this viewer was infested with malware, adware or a virus, but I don't use the same program Henri uses to detect those sorts of things.

I then popped open the latest CoolVL build. I got a EULA agreement there, too:

(from the bizarre album)

Simple, fairly succinct, and to the point. Also, no virus warning either when I installed it, or when I ran it (not that I expected to see one).

(from the bizarre album)

Then I went looking for the 'About' feature for CoolVL. I begin to see his point, because whereas the Kirsten viewer just credits KirstenLee Cinquetti for everything, Henri Beauchamp credits anyone who might have stared at the code for five minutes:
The Cool VL Viewer is brought to you and maintained by Henri Beauchamp.

Special credits:

I will say, that is a much more comprehensive list.

(from the bizarre album)

And the CoolVL 'Licenses & Copyrights' tab mimics the S19 viewer's list fairly exactly, which tells me that's just a standard legal block all viewers are supposed to list.

(from the bizarre album)

Then for some reason, I turned green. At least I go with the furniture? Still don't know why that happened (I didn't change eyes, outfit, hair, or skins while I was running these comparisons), but I took it as my cue to get off the grid.

Once off the grid, I searched through the CoolVL viewer files, and did track down the 'license.txt' file, with absolutely no difficulty. (The full text of that file can be read here.) And that has about the same amount of info that KirstenLee's EULA agreement had, only better organized.

So...and always keeping in mind I know next to nothing about viewer coding...I'd say, just in my opinion, that at least part of this is due to misunderstanding, on one or both sides. I'm fairly sure that Cinquetti thinks tossing in the copyright information into an installation agreement is the same as having it in the viewer; whether that's safe to say, I wouldn't be the one to ask. That there is more information, and more names, listed in Beauchamp's viewer is uncontested; but there's still one question remaining.

Does Cinquetti's saying "brought to life by KL" constitute claiming sole ownership of the viewer and its attached code? I ask that because of this, from Beauchamp's full listing in the 'license.txt' file:
The origin of this software must not be misrepresented; you must not claim
that you wrote the original software.
Kirsten says, there was never a claim of sole ownership. Henri says, there IS a claim of sole ownership, by virtue of that single line under 'Authors & Credits'. So...who's right?

That, I think you'd have to ask an IP rights lawyer about, and I'm not one.

baptised in the water, you're draining the well

First Nathan Fillion stole Zelda, then he stole Wil Wheaton's wife, Ann, then this happened, and the whole thing ended here.

It's not the first time Wheaton's been a meme, but it's the first one that dragged in guest appearances.

Twilight's been named the worst movie ever, which I think is slightly over the top--I mean, it's bad, don't get me wrong, but there are worse films out there. Like these, for instance. Or these. Or these. Or this list, which contains some even I haven't heard of.

I guess the main point is there's a lot of bad movies out there. Good for Rifftrax; bad for us.

CBS finally gets back to the Star Trek fan community in SL; their response is oddly reasonable. They have no objection to folks making items for their own, personal use; they simply object to those items (created with copyrighted material from Star Trek, by means of logos, insignia, uniforms, and prop items) for sale commercially. While that's a blow to the community--there are folks who make their living on mining IP for tasty financial gain--it's not as large a blow as everyone seemed to expect.

Love Portal? Have the freedom to paint your walls? How about a Portal-themed bedroom? At the very least, that provides a great leap-off point for decorating projects of your own.

[20:05] Axx Sxxxxxx: all the lindens in this chat be big fat faggits.
[20:05] Axx Sxxxxxx: i dont care.
[20:06] Sxxxxx Sxxxxx wonders wtf brought that outburst of rude on
[20:06] Axx Sxxxxxx: wonders wtf is has too do with you
[20:06] Axx Sxxxxxx: fagmatron

I do believe that's one of the strangest insults I've ever heard. What, exactly, is a "fagmatron"? The Urban Dictionary definition doesn't exactly help:
Being a real fag (no homo)
Uh...I don't get it. How can you simultaneously call someone gay but say you're not calling them gay? I don't understand.

Though oddly relevant to that...Viewer controversy? Viewer controversy. And while that's an upsetting turn of events--mainly, because I find it bizarre that Ms. Kirsten would pull something this underhanded--that's not what I want to discuss.

Quoting this bit from the CoolVL forums detailing this event:
I of course tried to contact Kirsten for explanations, but if you visit his BLOG, you will find no email or any way to contact him: I did let a comment on the BLOG entry for S19, but it was never published. I also IMed him in SL (and I know, thanks to a script, that he did connect after I sent him those IMs, so he certainly got them), and again, never got any reply during the past two weeks.
"His"? KirstenLee didn't give the gender away, Henri? But, annoyingly, he didn't stop there. "Tillie" is the first responder to his post:
I am not sure if this is really a post by Kirsten... didn't she announce to no more work on the client? If she came back to work, wouldn't she release some statement like that, not just "this is S19!"? Looks weird, somehow.
Henri responds:
This is his(1) blog, no doubt on that, and the code repository does contain all the other S* releases (that were not Cool VL Viewer clones).

     (1) the person behind the "KistrenLee Cinquetti" avatar is a male.
And my response is...why does this matter?

Seriously, people. Second Life's nearly ten years old. Ten years of gender fluidity, exploration, avatar inspiration, and virtual life. Why is this not simple for people? If they're female in world, they're female. If they're male in world, they're male. If they're neither, keep the pronouns gender-neutral.

If they TELL you otherwise, then you can react otherwise, but seriously--if they don't make a point of it, IN WORLD, then lay the hell off the gender, okay? That's called outing, it's rude, and whether you're the injured party or not, it just makes you sound like a clueless bully.

Notwithstanding the fact that, unless you--the person behind the screen--have an interest in moving in with/sleeping with/partnering with in RL the person behind their screen...it's none of your business in the first place. Be more tolerant, for the love of all gods, or if you can't do that, then shut the hell up. You're not helping anyone by making someone's "real" gender known; all you'll end up doing is hurting them, angering them, or depressing them. Nobody wins with tactics that underhanded.

Finally...SL is celebrating ten years of operation, later this month. To...erm...share? In the festivities? They're offering a bear. But not just any bear--this year, they're offering an avatar-sized rabid animal. Ready to tear out throats in a single swipe, it's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's--*gurgle gurgle death*...

Okay, maybe it's not actually scripted to kill people, but...seriously. It just looks hostile.

(from the bizarre album)

Still think I'm kidding? That's just creepy.

9 General Terms and Conditions.

If You are an individual signing this Agreement on behalf of a company, then You represent that You have authority to execute this Agreement on behalf of such company. This Agreement will be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States and the State of California, without regard to or application of its choice of law rules or principles. If for any reason a court of competent jurisdiction finds any provision of this Agreement, or portion thereof, to be unenforceable, that provision of the Agreement shall be enforced to the maximum extent permissible so as to affect the intent of the parties, and the remainder of this Agreement shall continue in full force and effect. the shining pride of America is a nation up for war

This is Henri Beauchamp's version of the User Agreement; rather than pop up on install, it popped up upon first running the program.

Cool VL Viewer

1.- Origin and support:

The Cool VL Viewer is an Open Source (GPL v2), third party viewer for Second Life® and OpenSim grids. It is maintained by Henri Beauchamp (Second Life avatar name), maker of the Cool Products in Second Life.

This software is not provided or supported by Linden Lab®, the makers of Second Life®.

Support for this viewer is provided exclusively through the Cool VL Viewer forum (http://sldev.free.fr/forum/).

2.- Updates and upgrades:

Please note that there is no auto-update feature neither any latest version checking mechanism for this viewer: it is your responsibility to check regularly for new versions from the Cool VL Viewer website (http://sldev.free.fr/) or its forum (http://sldev.free.fr/forum/).

3.- Privacy policy:

No data whatsoever is collected or sent to the author of this viewer. Data is however stored on your hard disk and exchanged with the servers of the grid(s) you connect to, in the exact same way as an official Second Life viewer would do.

4.- Linden Lab's Third-Party Viewer policy compliance:

As the maintainer of this viewer, I, Henri Beauchamp (and in fact the real person behind this avatar), declare in good faith that to the best of my knowledge and understanding, and baring any unknown and yet to discover bug, this viewer is compliant with the Third-Party Viewers policy as published by Linden Lab (http://secondlife.com/corporate/tpv.php) at the time this particular viewer build was released (see above about your responsibility regarding update checks).

5.- Liability:

As a user of this viewer, you must also comply with Linden Lab's Third-Party Viewer policy when you connect with this viewer to the Second Life grid, and I will take no responsibility whatsoever for any bugs or shortcomings that you would abuse or exploit in any way to violate the TOS of any grid you connect to, or to violate the TPV policy of Second Life.

Finally, to make things crystal clear, let's quote the GPL v2.0 (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.txt) under which this viewer is licensed:

NO WARRANTY
11. BECAUSE THE PROGRAM IS LICENSED FREE OF CHARGE, THERE IS NO WARRANTY FOR THE PROGRAM, TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW. EXCEPT WHEN OTHERWISE STATED IN WRITING THE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS AND/OR OTHER PARTIES PROVIDE THE PROGRAM "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE PROGRAM IS WITH YOU. SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, YOU ASSUME THE COST OF ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR OR CORRECTION.

12. IN NO EVENT UNLESS REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW OR AGREED TO IN WRITING WILL ANY COPYRIGHT HOLDER, OR ANY OTHER PARTY WHO MAY MODIFY AND/OR REDISTRIBUTE THE PROGRAM AS PERMITTED ABOVE, BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY GENERAL, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE PROGRAM (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF DATA OR DATA BEING RENDERED INACCURATE OR LOSSES SUSTAINED BY YOU OR THIRD PARTIES OR A FAILURE OF THE PROGRAM TO OPERATE WITH ANY OTHER PROGRAMS), EVEN IF SUCH HOLDER OR OTHER PARTY HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

If you agree with the above terms, please click on the "I agree to the Terms of Service" check box and press the "Continue" button. If you do not agree, simply press the "Cancel" button to quit this viewer.
Considerably shorter, but I do believe all the t's are crossed and the i's dotted.

toiling through the ages, making toys on garnished wages

Sometimes I'm the only one seeing the oddity:

(from the bizarre album; sea above, sea...below?)

And yes, yes, I know what I'm wearing. Shush. I was testing a concept.

This is not the first time I've seen something like this, but this (while I was still using Cool VL) was definitely one of the oddest things. This was several months back, during a period where rollbacks seemed to be happening every four days, and I had been having problems rezzing things out in my skybox.

When this occurred, I was standing in a Linden sim, empty of everything but me and a slight protrusion of green. I looked down, checking inventory, and when I looked back up--doubled ocean view.

(from the bizarre album; more of the Booty Brigade at Viviane)

Guess what I found! I'd forgotten all about this one; turns out there were actually four of them, nearly all with the same bottom-heavy, gargantuan-butted shape, tiny little feet, and fully physics-enabled, almost-entirely-maximum-sized breasts.

(Forgot to mention that on the first round--all four of these lasses had extraordinarily bouncy physics layers. It wasn't just the breasts--it was breasts, bellies and butts, and all at full tilt. A little bit of bounce adds a touch of realism. But a lot? A lot pushes it full-tilt into surrealist clown-car territory. On goddamn SPRINGS.)

We move from the very large to the very small. While wandering through Vendom, I caught a wee fierce sleekit beasty...oh, and the Petite riding it:

(from the bizarre album; Petite feral horned hooved...something, riding a squirrel)

I didn't even know the grid had riding squirrels.

Of course, if you look more closely...

(from the bizarre album; Petite feral horned hooved...something, riding a squirrel)

...you'll notice a few additional things. Like the fact that she's essentially wearing a fur bikini. And has horns. And has a little black twitching tail. I don't know if she actually has ears, nor the species of whatever ears those might be, because her hair covered them up.

Also note the hooves. Big black furry ones.

Her profile said she was Gorean, something I find fairly hard to believe (at least in theme, as there's only one recognizably non-humanoid intelligent race on Gor, and it's not teensy pixie people), but mostly, I was just grinning idiotically at the concept of wee feral hooved women, riding fierce squirrelly stags into battle.

Or...whatever wee feral hooved women would ride into battle. I could be wrong. Maybe she really longs for a ferret. Or a shrunken tiger. Who knows?

11 November, 2012

I look over out of the window, I see your face, and I'm frightened, 'cause I live on the eighth floor

"Please, get the name right when citing it elsewhere: the name is "Cool VL Viewer", and not "Cool VL", "Cool Viewer", etc..."

Bite me, Henri. Especially since I had to abandon the use of CoolVL--again--when I lost the ability to perceive scattered text (so far observed: landmark descriptions, sim descriptions, the 'Buy/Pay' button on menus, my last name on login, and names of avatars I'm searching for, among other things) whenever I logged in. After spending two days tracking down the exact version of my graphics driver and reading something like eight different sites dealing with graphical concerns, I can say with some authority that it wasn't my drivers.

Mr. Allen talked me into downloading Catznip, and while on the catputer, it failed to work at all, on this one, it does. I have the usual days-to-weeks of figuring out where everything is, but seriously, I'm so tired to having to change viewers because they get buggy and stop working.

Which, in this case, I lay entirely at CoolVL's door.

(from the Canada album)

Remember Power Girl? Rather infamously known for her "boob window" (though her backstory was originally something like, she didn't feel she could wear Superman's token 'S', so she removed it from her costume, leaving the oval where it would have been bare), she's been largely given the Emma Frost treatment by fans and artists on her comic line both.

(from the Canada album)

Granted, she's always been slightly tilted towards pinup art, even briefly dipping into nigh-porn territory on occasion (at the very least, heavy on the cheesecake poses), but...I really have to protest, because this goes WAY too far in the other direction. Plus, keep in mind that's art published in one of the newly-revised lines; somewhere, somehow, that art passed the test for publication.

Power Girl as a giraffe with malformed hips (her legs quite clearly split in twain just below the curve of her right hip, and the hell?), linebacker shoulders, at least one broken arm, holding an invisible handbag...That was the best they could come up with?!?

Apparently, the "look" they were trying to go for is seen more proportionately here, but seriously, that's not an epic costume redesign in the first place. (And there's more than one artist doing weirdly mutated version of Power Girl in the New 52 as well--witness this appalling example, with her snarling knees and that staggeringly reconfigured package.)

The best image I could find of the new costume doesn't even seem to feature the new costume--it ditches the wonky 'arm capes' entirely, removes the tightly boned and lengthened giraffe neck, and trades in her expected white/gold/red color scheme for a navy/red/gold scheme, but barring all that, it's not that bad. But everything to get to that point, so far, is tacky at best, and revolting at worst. Poor Kara.

Finally, for Memorial day, a poppy to wear. While it is a US holiday, it's one with historical standing: the roots go back at least to the Civil War, if not farther. I also know there are at least a few international groups in Second Life who broaden the day to include honorable dead from all conflicts, not just the US ones.

Remember, honor, acknowledge; really, that's what Memorial Day is. And that goes farther than any one nation.

no sleep, nothing in between me and the rain

This one takes a bit of explaining.

It all started on Henri Beauchamp's viewer forum. He'd apparently been in discussions for some time with Oz Linden, and...well, Oz handed him an official Linden decision that he disagreed with, is the short version:
I finally decided to publish these emails since not only do they explain why I had to disable the experimental mesh deformer code in the stable release of the Cool VL Viewer, but also because it shows how badly Open Source contributors are treated by Linden Lab (note that it is nothing new either: the first talented Open Source contributor to give up because of LL's arrogant and inadequate behaviour was Nicholaz Beresford, back in 2008)...
Now, that's straight from the first message (though it is the first message on the second page). And he has a point: Beresford spent many, many months banging his head against the wall of Linden obstinacy, and eventually realized that his life, his energies, and most importantly, his main hobby shouldn't be tied up in maintaining an alternate viewer for a company who didn't care.

Beauchamp, though...well, he takes this as a stepping-off point for an epic email rant.

From Oz:
Henri... as you should well know, the deformer falls under rule 2.k of the Policy on Third Party Viewers. As such, since it has not yet been accepted by Linden Lab into the common code base, incorporating it into a regular release of your viewer is in violation of the Policy. To some extent, I'm normally willing to give you a little more leeway on these things than larger viewer - Cool VL has so few users that the potential for harm (in this case in the form of the proliferation of assets compatible with future viewers) is reduced, but the fact that you are so heavily advertizing it puts me in an awkward position.
Translation from the legalese: "Dude, look, you have dick for users right now, and if it weren't something very openly known--which you agreed to follow--we'd let it go. But you didn't put it in an experimental, download-at-your-own-risk viewer, you put it in your main release viewer. Can't have that. Take it out."

Seems pretty simple, right? Well...From Beauchamp:

So, are you saying LL is going to abandon the mesh deformer project, or are you just taking back your own words on the OK you gave in the past for viewers to include it as an experimental feature?
Err...no, actually. The Lindens still allow experimental features in experimental viewers, as you well know. You put this in the stable release.

But he goes on:
It is included only as an experimental feature, which I always advertized as such and that is off by default (and it's switchable from the Advanced menu only, not from the Preferences floater).
Which means he knows both that it's not supposed to be in the main release ("only as an experimental feature"), but also that he figured burying it in a sub-menu would make everything okay (because, what, only 'advanced users' would know how to access that menu??)
There is 0% risk of any harm in that particular case, and this independently from the number of users of my viewer: my backport of the mesh deformer is 100% compatible with Qarl's.
That's not the damned point, and you know it--it doesn't matter a whit if Qarl's deformer code is used. It's not official yet, you ditz.

There's a lot of back and forth wherein Oz comes across as pretty reasonable, and Henri gets increasingly shrill and self-serving...but ultimately, it's just a series of emails. Explains why he took the deformer code out of the main release, okay, fine, sorry things seem to have gotten so heated, but whatever.

Then you start reading Henri's responses to people who commented on that forum thread. Like this bit:
My feeling is that LL is pissed off because I produce better code than they do and, since their stupid stance prevents them from reusing it (nothing can prevent them from reusing LGPL code that I explicitly released as such and personally encouraged them to reuse: CA or not, they *CAN* reuse it since it's LGPL !!!), they wish I would never submit any code, in case they (or another developer) would come up with the same ideas as the ones I have (re-read Oz' first email: it's evident !).
Or this bit from the first page that starts everything off:
First of all, the method used to introduce the changes... You'll ask me, "what method ?", and indeed I should have said "the lack of any method", because throwing in new paragraphs in an existing policy without any official forewarning and announcement being done is quite a stupid thing to do and shows a total absence of any method!

You should remember also that when the TPV policy was first introduced, LL did provide forewarning and some time for users and TPV developers to react and contribute to its refining...

Indeed, proceeding as LL did with the latest policy changes was bound to trigger strong reactions (and much unneeded and exaggerated drama) from the community; makes me wonder if there's anybody left in charge for the communication at the Lab...
Yeah.

But it still gets weirder. In going through page eleven of SLUniverse's CoolVL coverage (because every alternative TPV has a sub-forum thread there), came a link to Misfit's Index of Viewers. This--because it's not affiliated with the Lab in any way--is a fairly impartial review of features over more emotional reasons to prefer one viewer over another. Save that Henri had a problem there, too.

Back in May of this year--back when Misfit listed most viewers by their shorthand descriptions for ease and readability--Henri wandered in and blew a gasket:
Please, correct the name of my viewer: it is not "CoolVL" but "Cool VL Viewer"

Thank you.
Why this is such a huge deal to Beauchamp still passeth any understanding I can throw at it, but apparently, it was--to the point of several increasingly irate demands that Misfit either call it by its proper name (which apparently, in Henri's view, includes "Viewer" as part of the official title, or something), or cease to list it at all, thankyouandgoodDAYsir...Honestly, you'd think Sarge Misfit was a girl, the way Henri yells at him.

In fact, it escalated for three days until Misfit caved enough to toss his own explanation up, and apparently, even afterwards, because now Misfit's listing all the viewers with "Viewer" after their name.

Perceive this clearly, because I think I have a small little pedestal in this terrain to call all my own: it's not a smart idea to argue with the companies who make your toys, unless you are very, very sure of your reception. I know this, and know that at any time, a Linden could wander across the blog, get seriously irritated, and bounce my cat-eared self off in record time. That would hurt, undeniably. But knowing who I am and what I've written about the Lindens, on this blog, publicly? I could not say they might not have a point.

And I will also say, in Henri's defense, he does make good points. The problem is that, along with those good points comes a hell of a lot of high-toned entitlement that is just mentally stunning to wade through. Anyone who's ever requested help from Beauchamp on his forums (at least, if you're female) already knows he's an ass, so this isn't news. What is, I think--at least, to me--is how he's somehow managed to ball up all that jack-hatted superiority, wad it up into a huge ball, armor the entire thing, and use it to convince himself that he's morally and ethically superior to the actual people in the right. This is a profoundly dangerous, and I might also add, stupid, position to hold.

(from the bizarre album; Sakide's former holiday offering, now on their lucky board.)

On to other things. Look! Pretty little femboy holiday elf! Only at Sakide on the lucky board.

A casual mention in another group led to a group member apologizing that the troll escaped confinement, with a link to the troll in question. This led me to the Troll Museum of Second Life. There only seems to be three entries there, but it would be wonderful if this caught on. Imagine, a visual repository of avatars to be wary of, based on spam activity alone. Technology is a beautiful thing.

Finally, I was pondering an entry on Arkhamville, but going there two nights ago left a bad taste in my mouth, and...then there was this, sent last night:
[01:20] Sxxxxx Bxxxxxx: hi guys, i have hear some people say they have had issues wit items on their hufs missing. if you experience thi just etach it and reattach and it should work. if not pls let me know and we will get it fixed. it should not hender your game progress tho
Yeah. I think I can safely ditch that group now.

Listen, people, if you care so little for your fellow players that you don't even feel like running something through a simple spellcheck? Don't be in charge of posting things. Flat out.

(from the bizarre album; I think I'd have been displeased, but okay, if there hadn't been active buzzing flies around the corpse.)

Also, if the whole reason you're getting extra folks on the sim is to enlist them in solving the killing of Mr. Whomever? Don't have a rotting female carny with an axe in her head not fifty feet from the site of the supposed crime. That tells me two things, right off the bat:
  1. "We don't care if it violates the story, it's cool lol!" or
  2. "Oh, them's CARNY folk, it's not like they're PEOPLE! This fellow, why, we KNEW the guy!"
One sounds unbearably stupid; the other sounds unbearably classist. I don't care for either.

Ever wanted one of TRON's lightcycles? Now, maybe you can have one.

Sort of.

If you have $50,000 spare in the coinpurse.

In other news:

[20:28] Sxxxxx Sxxxxx: Sending LM for "Dollcoco" - they do rigged mesh *everything* - their approach is since we can't deform the mesh (yet) they're doing a doll body (yes, doll joints too) and doll heads and have mesh clothing rigged for THOSE bodies/heads instead of people trying to make them fit something else
[20:29] Sxxxxx Sxxxxx: there's a free bunny mesh av too, btw. Also, for group, bodies, one set of ears and a joker dress are free, and there's free demos of the heads.
Sxxxxx Sxxxxx has offered you '*DOLLCOCO*_COCO DESIGNS, COCO DESIGNS (156, 114, 4013)' in Second Life. Log in to accept or decline the offer.

Thus armed, and being of somewhat manic despairing heart, I sallied forth to investigate Dollcoco.

(from the dolly album)

So, the store is in a clean, white space, minimal but attractive decorations. Reminds me a lot of Lico Lico, actually, just smaller. And everything's neatly set out--instructions, heads, bodies, outfits.

(from the dolly album)

Most of the outfits run from from L$250 to L$750, depending on amount of detail work, I'd assume. If you turn around, from facing the sign, you'll find an add-on of elf ears for the doll heads, and a card-suit 'dress', both for free if you join the Dollcoco update group. There's also some less "doll"-centric outfits along the same wall, some neo-Grecian numbers, some evening slip dresses. These selections seem to be towards the lower end of the price line.

(from the dolly album)

These are hardly all of the doll heads available--and though most are made to match the "snow" tone doll body, there is also a variant called "cocoa" which is dark and lovely. Unfortunately there's only one head to match that particular body--so far. Here's to hoping there will be more.

(from the dolly album)

These are the two doll bodies, containing three different torso variants (anatomical, "smooth", and wearing boy-shorts and bras, respectively), comprising nine mesh pieces (and also complete with fully ball-jointed limbs, wrists, and feet), miraculously both available for free (again, if you're a member of the update group). I'm astounded at that.

(from the dolly album)

She also has fish skirts.

Don't ask.

So, why aren't you seeing me modeling any of these? I will admit, I did throw caution to the wind and, since I'd given back Salix Alba in Winterfell, spent L$750 on the all-black EGL frock, L$450 on the "Emilly" head, and will likely try to talk friends tomorrow into tossing me L$250 for a pair of the mesh boots. Then I went home and tried everything on...and nearly pounded my head against the monitor screen, so great was my frustration.

See, the latest build of Henri Beauchamp's Cool-VL mesh viewer does not work. Flat out. Among the many, many bugs it manifests:
  • crashing on teleport
  • crashing on login
  • crashing on sim-crossing
  • constant (like, every five minutes constant) messages that the viewer is going to crash due to lack of sufficient memory (even if the viewer cache is cleared every time the message appears and the user relogs)
  • the viewer constantly auto-scaling back draw distance to 64
  • the viewer constantly relocating local lights to sun and moon only under graphics, even if changed
  • the inability to spin the camera around an avatar without the avatar also spinning around to face where the camera's pointing
  • refusal to load textures in sims
  • refusal to load vendors in sims
  • refusal to load anything in sims
  • occasional inability to load EYES (Goddamn it, Henri, EYES! WHAT THE HELL?!?)
I'd point you towards the forums for this, for any tips and tricks, but Henri has inexplicably morphed from a helpful, caring programmer I trust into complete stunted snippy jerklife, and, until he improves, I switched to Singularity. It's noooot just the drivers, Henri, look into it.

How'ver, the problem with doing this? (Other than the waste of time spent completely uninstalling Cool-VL and Second Life v2 and then running a clean install of Singularity?)

I did not realize Singularity did not have mesh support yet.

Damn it.

So I'll get back to you on that.

In the meantime, an explanation for why there are so many bugs in Skyrim. Also, based (partially) on that, I think more games should have nanobears.

Herds and herds of nanobears.

Forever.

That is all.

While I decide if it's too late to back-date posts that contain the last of the Hair Fair pics, I got hit with this when I was listening...
