if you could see us, then you'd listen


At the staging area for Vilmer House, there were instructions for how to set up their desired effects. Apparently, their main desired effect is embracing fuschia as a lifestyle.


The next panel told me to turn on Shadows. I've never used shadows before. And suddenly, everything is monochrome.


But I hate mouselook!


So this is the Vilmer House orphanage. Doesn't look...that terrifying...
[20:27] The Vilmer House II: A long time ago, the Vilmer House Orphanage was a very popular orphanage. Children from all over the area were brought to the orphanage because there were always rooms available.
That's not the best sign in an orphanage, actually. That does imply a lot of space, but if the house isn't that spacious, then...there's an overly high rate of turnover, illness, or...death.
[20:28] The Vilmer House III: Miss Agatha, the elderly lady who ran the Vilmer House, was never married. The people who lived around the area never knew Miss Agatha for anything else than the woman at the Vilmer House.
That happens with gentlefolk who keep to themselves, though.


Is that...surely that's just carpet folds...right?

[20:41] The Vilmer House IV: The children were not allowed in the kitchen at the Vilmer House. Miss Agatha didn't want the children to grow fat, so she kept them always a tad hungry.
That's not good.
[20:37] The Vilmer House VII: It became the local kid's right of passage to break in to the Vilmer House and take one of Miss Agatha's beloved Porcelain Dolls. It's said that only a few kids have accomplished this and have a Miss Agatha Doll to show for it.
I hear a child sobbing. "Hello? Is anyone there?"
[20:36] The Vilmer House VIII: The breaking and entering of the Vilmer House ceased when a group of kids was rumored to enter the house for a seance and were never seen again.

This room is...so very, very dark, save for flashes of lightning. Even the flashlight does not seem to work.

II? What does II mean?

So what happened next? I don't know--running with that many extra features enabled killed me almost as fast as Slaughter House Manor. If your computer is very powerful, and has an excess of memory, you may just skate through these two with no effort. I, sadly, could not, which is sad for me, because the storyline was intriguing, the effects were subtle and wonderful, and I most definitely wanted to see more!

Giving this one four out of five skulls, with the skull deduction only because I could not make it to the upper stories of the house!

on the seventh day I rest for a minute or two

With 2009 came new challenges; namely, a system of 'rewarding' new premium accounts that I still hear complaints about to this day. Oh, granted, the occasional furniture or adornment gift that wanders towards premium accounts, the ability to buy and sell virtual land, and the premium-only sandboxen; these are all fun things, and--at least where the sandboxen are concerned--potentially invaluable to premium builders.

No, where the hitch seems to be is with the Lindenhomes. In essence, what the Lab has done is remade their "first land" proviso with a shocking difference, by giving each new premium account holder the ability to pick a "neighborhood", and subsequently receive--"free of charge"--a 512 parcel of land, complete with home and furnishings. Home and furnishings, I might add, that that premium account-holder cannot modify, retexture, or reconfigure in any way. It is theirs and not-theirs, in the same instance. It exists as a possession and it is never given away. Paradox? Yes, with each house that is offered.

I suppose, if the Lindens' intent is to quickly shunt new premium accounts towards tier fees and land ownership, simply because the Lindenhomes is question are so bland and utilitarian, then I suppose they work? So...yay for that?

I admit, I stood in front of this placard for a very long time. "Then in August, the Emerald viewer was in trouble..." This makes it sound as if it was purely a software issue, and not a deliberate violation of trust. I'm not going to turn this into another Emerald diatribe, but really, even within a commemorative event array, that single toss-off line does not sit well with me...nor, I would suspect, with any of the former users of Emerald who felt profoundly victimized by the developers' bad behavior.

This was another difficult placard to cover. I'm still not entirely comfortable with mesh, if only because I like to be seen as clothed when I go shopping. But the other issues that this particular sign mentions were both extraordinarily problematic at the time. As it turns out, looking back on these events, web profiles have turned out to be minimally non-invasive, though they still have features I'm not fond of using.

But the closing of the Teen Grid was a profound violation for many of us. First, because Claudia Linden, when asked, said it would never happen, but also because it's still such an appallingly bad idea. Intellectually, I realize there's no difference between someone I don't know who's thirty behind the screens, and someone I don't know who's seventeen; but emotionally, I stopped dating at all past the closure of Teen Grid. I do not want to play in mature ways with people I can't trust to be at least eighteen. It may be a minimal standard, but it's mine and I'm by damn clinging to it.

And here's another controversy that's still raging. There are many separate groups in SL, on many levels; at any given time, there's always someone new to embrace or disdain, but even within these cliques and sub-structures, there's a fluidity that comes from all playing in the same space, with the same tools.

The "Resident" last name--which, to be honest, doesn't even exist; it's a holdover to provide two distinct names under Legacy viewers--was the first brutal social distinction in SL. Within days of the announcement, anyone who didn't have a last name was almost universally dealt supercilious scorn or lip-curling disgust, and all for no reason, essentially--or perhaps for the very worst of reasons: "I was here first".

At this point, there are Resident-bearing sim owners, Resident-bearing business owners, and overall, as a defined class, they add more than they take away. But it's been a harder struggle for new residents than it ever should have been, simply by virtue of the Lindens removing their choice of a last name. It set the cultural bar excruciatingly low; too low for many at first even to make the attempt to struggle under. And it's a great shame to all of us, that so many of us couldn't see past that unfortunate distinction.

I'm still waiting for evidence that Project Shining will be worth the hype.

At the time I snapped this picture, the latest settlement involving the Lindens hadn't been announced. Looking back on it from the perspective of time, however, Rosedale's statement seems flawed and disingenuous. What we have in Second Life is real, and is ours? Hardly--as that settlement proves once again, what we have in SL is theirs, and it's as ephemeral as this exhibit will be, in a few more hours.

let me open my teeth and cradle you there

RL Dolcett, anyone? Ergh.

Back on the 3rd, I spoke on a viewer controversy that's been brewing for some time. Earlier (as in, I past-dated it so it could be boring back in January), I linked Kirsten's initial EULA and credits in full. This had to be agreed to before I even downloaded the viewer. The CoolVL viewer was just a simple install, nothing overly complicated about it.

Then I opened each viewer in turn, on the grid.

The first thing "Blackbird" told me was that my outfit didn't exist. Which was strange to me, as I could clearly see my outfit, and it was the same one I'd been wearing the last time I logged in with Singularity. Odd.

Then I went looking for the 'About' tab. It's not under Help, first of all; it's under the 'S19' tab itself:

How'ver, under the 'Licenses & Copyrights' tab, there's this. Which looks fairly official with all bases covered, to me. Unless Henri is claiming that he, himself, coded his viewer entirely by hand, with no help from any other code source, what Kirsten seems to have done is credit the original (hence, first) coder for purposes of licensing--then left off anyone else who might have had a hand in redoing the code, either in sections or in whole.

There's a further point at the bottom of that tab, to see "licenses.txt" for more information, but I can't seem to find that anywhere within the program files.

I had no warning that this viewer was infested with malware, adware or a virus, but I don't use the same program Henri uses to detect those sorts of things.

I then popped open the latest CoolVL build. I got a EULA agreement there, too:

Simple, fairly succinct, and to the point. Also, no virus warning either when I installed it, or when I ran it (not that I expected to see one).

Then I went looking for the 'About' feature for CoolVL. I begin to see his point, because whereas the Kirsten viewer just credits KirstenLee Cinquetti for everything, Henri Beauchamp credits anyone who might have stared at the code for five minutes:

And the CoolVL 'Licenses & Copyrights' tab mimics the S19 viewer's list fairly exactly, which tells me that's just a standard legal block all viewers are supposed to list.

Then for some reason, I turned green. At least I go with the furniture? Still don't know why that happened (I didn't change eyes, outfit, hair, or skins while I was running these comparisons), but I took it as my cue to get off the grid.

Once off the grid, I searched through the CoolVL viewer files, and did track down the 'license.txt' file, with absolutely no difficulty. (The full text of that file can be read here.) And that has about the same amount of info that KirstenLee's EULA agreement had, only better organized.

So...and always keeping in mind I know next to nothing about viewer coding...I'd say, just in my opinion, that at least part of this is due to misunderstanding, on one or both sides. I'm fairly sure that Cinquetti thinks tossing in the copyright information into an installation agreement is the same as having it in the viewer; whether that's safe to say, I wouldn't be the one to ask. That there is more information, and more names, listed in Beauchamp's viewer is uncontested; but there's still one question remaining.

Does Cinquetti's saying "brought to life by KL" constitute claiming sole ownership of the viewer and its attached code? I ask that because of this, from Beauchamp's full listing in the 'license.txt' file:
The origin of this software must not be misrepresented; you must not claim
that you wrote the original software.
Kirsten says, there was never a claim of sole ownership. Henri says, there IS a claim of sole ownership, by virtue of that single line under 'Authors & Credits'. So...who's right?

That, I think you'd have to ask an IP rights lawyer about, and I'm not one.

and bitter cold goes side by side

News of NiranV's trouble with this JIRA is both daunting and depressing to read; while I no longer use Niran's viewer, I will say I found it easy to use, easy to build in, and photography was phenomenal while using it. Overall, I really thought it was the best of the V3 coding out there.

But it seems he's intent on hanging up his hat. If true, he will be sorely missed as a creator of an actual USABLE V3 viewer, but more than that, this kind of battle with the Lindens (and the rest of the TPV community) burns people to cinders, and that's the really sad thing. He shouldn't have had to fight this hard to fix things.

But then, in reading through the JIRA comments, my jaw hit the desk more than once:
"Real bodies are not perfectly symmetric, and neither is our avatar model; changing this now would be more disruptive than symmetry justifies."

Seriously? Plus, that statement is so dense as to be nearly impenetrable for most people. "Real bodies" aren't perfectly symmetrical, no, but virtual bodies are. Plus, this seems to be a simple change so that prim clothing, armor, prim attachments, wings, et cetera, would fit better and be positioned more accurately, right? So why would that small fix be "more disruptive" in any way?

There are more interesting comments on that JIRA, but I'm quoting the last one in brief:
"If Linden Labs really wants to get their customers to drop them like a rock, feel free to close it again. I'll know to stop getting on Second Life and go do something productive then."

This is exactly where a great number of us are. And I know I say this a lot, but this time I think it has some merit, because I've pretty much given up on updating this blog at present. (Granted, that does not mean I'm not blogging, but really, the only blogs I'm updating at all right now are my Tumblr feed and Topping Out.)

Without serious work on their communications with the community, without severe and sudden deconstruction of the ivory tower elitism that seems to solidly permeate Linden Lab, they're going to lose Second Life as a viable world. Which--also as I've said before--would be a really bad thing, because so many different applications (everything from training midwives to practicing military tactics to rehabilitating the disabled to encouraging socializing and personal contact) keep surfacing as to why SL is a good thing to have around.

Meet the fastest robot in the world--at least, so far, that is.

I don't normally get political on this blog, but I have to laud Nancy Pelosi's recent statement that violent video games have no impact on school shootings, and on violence in general. She's getting dunned, especially on Fox News, for this stance, but I have to applaud her for this. Because if violence in games were the sole determining cause, then there would be huge upswings for violent acts in Japan, for instance, which allows far more brutal depictions of violence in games than even we do.

We need to address the culture, not the media created by the culture. Because it's still the truth: guns don't shoot people by themselves, and violent games don't kill on their own, either. Find the root causes, not the symptoms, and we can begin to heal the cultural rift. Taking away the weapons and the games, by themselves, won't work.
Finding out why so many of our teens feel disenfranchized, why so many of our teens snap after years of constant bullying and abuse, will do us far more good than banning a few games that the bulk of young adults don't even play.

To distract from the political, have thirteen minutes of bizarre news bloopers.

And after that, here's a twenty-five minutes on why those of us in the US are paying more and getting less (in terms of download and upload speeds) than comparable developed nations. Just taking the case of Hong Kong, where even the poorest households have faster data transfer rates than people who have the fastest speeds over here, it does cause us to wonder why. I'd be very interested in finding out what Time-Warner and Comcast (to name only two) think about Ms. Crawford's assertions.

Moving on to art, let me introduce you to the work of Augusto Esquivel. He's using simple buttons strung on nylon line to create ephemeral, moving hanging sculptures. Personally, I remain enamored of the piano, but some of the other set pieces are just as stunning.

For art closer to home, buying one of the clock pegs from Yanko Design will let you use any random object (of the correct dimensions) as clock hands. Want to mark the hours of your day with pencils or pens? Done. Want to insert harvest twigs? Done. Slim throwing knives, tatted bookmarks stiffened with cornstarch, wire ribbon? Whatever. It'll work. Insert things into peg; set correct time; insert peg into wall; done.

The next dangerous drink has emerged: in this case, a vodka rated at 250,000 Scoville units. (To put that into perspective, poblano peppers rate, on average, between 1,000 and 2,000 Scovilles, jalapeño peppers around 5,000 Scovilles, straight cayenne about 30,000, and pure habañero pepper about 200,000.) The terms in which this vodka is described make it sound less like a drink, and more like an assault; however, I know people who would buy that--and drink it--with great relish.

At least until the burn hit. Then there might be tears and lamentations.

Let me also introduce you to Tsuyoshi Ozawa, who in 2012 did a series featuring women holding vegetable weapons. I...really have no place in my brain for that, so I'm sending it out to you. Maybe someone will make sense of it for me.

And there's a very inspiration video featuring women in Second Life participating in One Billion Rising. It's an important cause, and it's a touching video, both. (Plus, here and there you might recognize a few faces you know.)

This End-User License Agreement for Logitech LCD SDK ( “Agreement”) is a legal agreement between you, either an individual or legal entity (“You” or “you”) and Logitech Inc. (“Logitech”) for use of the Logitech LCD software development kit, which includes computer software and related media and documentation (hereinafter “LCD SDK”). By using this LCD SDK, you are agreeing to be bound by the terms and conditions of this Agreement. If you do not agree to the terms and conditions of this Agreement, promptly return the LCD SDK and other items that are part of this product in their original package with your sales receipt to your point of purchase for a full refund, or if you have downloaded this software from a Logitech web site, then you must stop using the software and destroy any copies of the software in your possession or control.

1 Grant of License and Restrictions.

This Agreement grants You the following rights provided that You comply with all terms and conditions of this Agreement.

  • (a) Logitech grants You a limited, non-exclusive, nontransferable license to install and use an unlimited number of copies of the LCD SDK on computers . All other rights are reserved to Logitech.

  • (d) In the event Logitech, in its sole discretion, elects to provide copies of the LCD SDK to more than one individual employed by You (if You are not a single individual), each such individual shall be entitled to exercise the rights granted in this Agreement and shall be bound by the terms and conditions herein.

2 Updates.

Logitech is not obligated to provide technical support or updates to You for the LCD SDK provided to You pursuant to this Agreement. However, Logitech may, in its sole discretion, provide further pre-release versions, technical support, updates and/or supplements (“Updates”) to You, in which case such Updates shall be deemed to be included in the “LCD SDK” and shall be governed by this Agreement, unless other terms of use are provided in writing by Logitech with such Updates.

3 Intellectual Property Rights.

The LCD SDK is licensed, not sold, to You for use only under the terms and conditions of this Agreement. Logitech and its suppliers retain title to the LCD SDK and all intellectual property rights therein. The LCD SDK is protected by intellectual property laws and international treaties, including U.S. copyright law and international copyright treaties. All rights not expressly granted by Logitech are reserved.

4 Disclaimer of Warranty.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, LOGITECH AND ITS SUPPLIERS PROVIDE THE LCD SDK AND OTHER LOGITECH PRODUCTS AND SERVICES (IF ANY) AS IS AND WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. 7 Export Law Assurances.

You agree and certify that neither the LCD SDK nor any other technical data received from Logitech will be exported outside the United States except as authorized and as permitted by the laws and regulations of the United States. If you have rightfully obtained the LCD SDK outside of the United States, you agree that you will not re-export the LCD SDK nor any other technical data received from Logitech, except as permitted by the laws and regulations of the United States and the laws and regulations of the jurisdiction in which you obtained the LCD SDK.

8 Termination:

This Agreement is effective until terminated. Upon any violation of any of the provisions of this Agreement, rights to use the LCD SDK shall automatically terminate and the LCD SDK must be returned to Logitech or all copies of the LCD SDK destroyed. You may also terminate this Agreement at any time by destroying all copies of the LCD SDK in your possession or control. If Logitech makes a request via public announcement or press release to stop using the copies of the LCD SDK, you will comply immediately with this request. The provisions of paragraphs 3, 7, 8 and 12 will survive any termination of this Agreement.

9 General Terms and Conditions.

If You are an individual signing this Agreement on behalf of a company, then You represent that You have authority to execute this Agreement on behalf of such company. This Agreement will be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States and the State of California, without regard to or application of its choice of law rules or principles. If for any reason a court of competent jurisdiction finds any provision of this Agreement, or portion thereof, to be unenforceable, that provision of the Agreement shall be enforced to the maximum extent permissible so as to affect the intent of the parties, and the remainder of this Agreement shall continue in full force and effect. ("Logitech") for use of the Logitech LCD software development kit, which includes computer software and related media and documentation (hereinafter "LCD SDK"). By using this LCD SDK, you are agreeing to be bound by the terms and conditions of this Agreement. 1 Grant of License and Restrictions.

2 Updates.

Logitech is not obligated to provide technical support or updates to You for the LCD SDK provided to You pursuant to this Agreement. However, Logitech may, in its sole discretion, provide further pre-release versions, technical support, updates and/or supplements ("Updates") to You, in which case such Updates shall be deemed to be included in the "LCD SDK" and shall be governed by this Agreement, unless other terms of use are provided in writing by Logitech with such Updates.

3 Intellectual Property Rights.

The LCD SDK is licensed, not sold, to You for use only under the terms and conditions of this Agreement. Logitech and its suppliers retain title to the LCD SDK and all intellectual property rights therein. The LCD SDK is protected by intellectual property laws and international treaties, including U.S. copyright law and international copyright treaties. All rights not expressly granted by Logitech are reserved.

4 Disclaimer of Warranty.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, LOGITECH AND ITS SUPPLIERS PROVIDE THE LCD SDK AND OTHER LOGITECH PRODUCTS AND SERVICES (IF ANY) AS IS AND WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. 7 Export Law Assurances.

You agree and certify that neither the LCD SDK nor any other technical data received from Logitech will be exported outside the United States except as authorized and as permitted by the laws and regulations of the United States. If you have rightfully obtained the LCD SDK outside of the United States, you agree that you will not re-export the LCD SDK nor any other technical data received from Logitech, except as permitted by the laws and regulations of the United States and the laws and regulations of the jurisdiction in which you obtained the LCD SDK.

8 Termination:

This Agreement is effective until terminated. Upon any violation of any of the provisions of this Agreement, rights to use the LCD SDK shall automatically terminate and the LCD SDK must be returned to Logitech or all copies of the LCD SDK destroyed. You may also terminate this Agreement at any time by destroying all copies of the LCD SDK in your possession or control. If Logitech makes a request via public announcement or press release to stop using the copies of the LCD SDK, you will comply immediately with this request. The provisions of paragraphs 3, 7, 8 and 12 will survive any termination of this Agreement.

9 General Terms and Conditions.

If You are an individual signing this Agreement on behalf of a company, then You represent that You have authority to execute this Agreement on behalf of such company. This Agreement will be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States and the State of California, without regard to or application of its choice of law rules or principles. If for any reason a court of competent jurisdiction finds any provision of this Agreement, or portion thereof, to be unenforceable, that provision of the Agreement shall be enforced to the maximum extent permissible so as to affect the intent of the parties, and the remainder of this Agreement shall continue in full force and effect.
