and then I get a scary thought: that he's here means he's never lost

Drunk octopus wants to fight you.

Insert Coin. (And yes, that really is all stop-motion animation.)

The Genderplayful Marketplace has launched! What is the Genderplayful Marketplace? Well, there's a person named Sarah Dopp who envisions a different world, a world where we accept gender is fluid, and changeable, and don't pin a lot of expectations on other humans if they want to explore a different gender state. Because clothing is communication, and clothing is what we put on to reflect who we are. As Megara said on the video:

"The wrong clothes can feel like trying to speak gibberish with conviction."

Go to the Tumblr site to get more involved. They're fundraising to launch the project, but they're $950 towards a goal of $5000, which is both really, really low, and also, really amazingly achievable. There's some perks for donating, which always help, but for the most part, it's just strong community-building, and trying to raise the funds from people who want to participate in pushing it forward. Help if you can and if you want to. At the very least, it means--even if online--there's another small patch of extreme and aggressive tolerance on the planet.

What should Gawker have done differently? EVERYTHING.

The problems with the whole Gawker mess are manifold, but it all comes down to several similar points:
  • People tend to keep the same passwords, for a long time.
  • People use easy-to-guess passwords, more often than they should.
  • People use similar--or the exact same!--passwords across multiple sites.
  • No one at Gawker knows how to stand up and accept responsibility for their bad faith in all of this, or their cluelessness at realizing they'd been hit.
I tossed up an initial reaction on YouTube, but what kills me about all of this is I thought I was safe. I thought I had nothing to worry about.

I was wrong.

Gawker currently comprises Gawker, Gawker.TV, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Kotaku, Gizmodo, Jalopnik, Jezebel, io9, Fleshbot (NSFW, if you couldn't figure it out from the name), Cityfile, and possibly New York Daily News. If you were signed up to any one of these services, your account name and password ARE out on the internet.

I'm not making that up, that's not hysteria--that's FACT.

If you're listed n any of these, change your password. Download LastPass, HandyPassword, 1Password (or track down your own password-protecting software) and make it something you couldn't guess in a million years. Your chances of getting hacked won't drop to zero, because hackers are inventive, but they'll at least go down considerably.

Cthulhu Legos!

Finally, there's a company out there doing Girl Genius scents--with permission of the Foglios! I can't help but think that some of the Jagerkin on the grid would adore some of those. (The one I really want to try: Jager #3.) And the one for the Baron makes me giggle.

Now, y'all excuse me, I have to go download the #@$%&(! official SL client so I can approve their #@$%&(! Terms of Service changes so I can get into #@$%&(! SL again! Bastards. Because Imprudence still can't see the Terms of Service pop-ups. Imprudence, yousuckyousuckyousuuuuuck for not fixing the approval bug.

I have a bulletproof heart, you have a hollowpoint smile

Fun new thing from Kallisti Burns:

I must confess, the response to the release of the EFB01 style instore has been quite surprising. It sold better than I thought it ever would - so I took it upon myself to make it available in Natural White on the Second Life Marketplace:

https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/dDx-EFB01-Flexible-braids-Natural-White-Marketplace-Exclusive/1717326

This is her product pic of it:

Photobucket

Now here's the thing. I wasn't going to release this style for sale in all colors... BUT... I'll go ahead and make the rest of the textures, create the remaining 34 colorways and GIVE THEM AWAY FREE IN THE SUBSCRIBEOMATIC if the 1000th unit of the EFB01 in white sells on the Marketplace before midnight on the 18th of December 2010. I'll also look at making some flexi braids to have available instore for early in the new year.

And here's a few shots of me wearing it, front:

Photobucket

and back:

Photobucket

Prim count: 85. Which is kind of unheard of--to get lower hair, you have to go deeply into sculpted hair terrain, or buy from Adam & Eve or the SkyShop. This is honestly in the lowest prims I've seen on a braided style.

Sounds good? All you need to do is follow the link, spend a Linden, tell your friends and get them to do the same; and have the[m] join the subscribeomatic if they're not already on the list.

If I see 1000 sales confirmations before the end of Friday, I'll get these styles out for you by Christmas. OK - it sounds like a lot, but bear in mind there are nearly SIX thousand of you receiving this notecard... it's certainly possible...

So what do you say?

I say yes, and I already bought it. It's well in line with her other braided styles--they flow naturally, they look like braided hair, and they aren't crushingly prim-heavy (which, I admit, has been a problem on other braided styles, because--well, honestly, braids are primmy!). But this one isn't. It's just pretty.

More importantly, this one is in natural white, which she doesn't do often--most of her whites are silver-touched, greyed, or pure ice-whites, and this one has that actual-hair look of pale hair stranded with gold. Whether or not she gets her thousand sales--and I'm hoping she will--at the very least you'll have a long braided hair, fairly easy to modify for unisex wear, that isn't in an everyday color.

So what do you say? Click the link, toss down a Linden--if 999 of you do so by Friday (and you're either in the subscribe-o-matic, or you plan on joining up)--you get this style in all the colors. This is too good to pass up, people!

(The skin I'm wearing is free, part of a pack of eight 'Winter Spirit' skins currently free from Curious Kitties' Winter Festival; eyes are Mortis in Mercury from House of Ruin, no longer available; dress is "Heidi", December 11th's gift from Kouse's Sanctum on her Advent Calendar.)

Lastly, overheard in the Thrifty Goth group:

[05:22 PM] Althea Faulkland: i had a male AV literally ask me 'want to be having the sex now please?'
[05:22 PM] Emilly Orr cackles
[05:22 PM] Emilly Orr: Oh, that's priceless.
[05:22 PM] Metsys79 Resident: lol at least he said please lol
[05:22 PM] Sherri Zeurra: i was in a club once... and had one IM me... 4 days old... looked like he just walked off the SL webpage
[05:23 PM] Sherri Zeurra: "hi....what are you doing?"
[05:23 PM] Leighlee Trafalgar: lol
[05:23 PM] Sherri Zeurra: "want to have sex?"
[05:23 PM] Eve Laloix: D:
[05:23 PM] Sherri Zeurra: it was soooo tempting to say "yes, but not with you.." but i was too nice. :P
[05:24 PM] Sherri Zeurra: i had a friend tell me i should have said "don't you know there's a 30 day waiting period"
[05:24 PM] Emilly Orr: I like that.

I really do. Not that I'd ever go through with it, but I'm so tempted to flip that on the next newcomer that asks. My former fallback for snark? "Sorry, you have to be over twenty to ride this ride."

You'd be shocked stupid how many of them answer, "Well, I'll be twenty...soon..."

Any questions IM Hera Aviatik

Most of her work runs to miniskirts and those huge legwarmer-slash-stomper paw boots called "boomers", but here and there are some potentially useful items. In this corner, in fact, she has a few items sold with 'paw boots'--what seems to be essentially high-heeled granny-styled boots--with claws on the boot toes. It's interesting, if nothing else.

As a neko myself (at least half the time), I say Miss Aviatik has a generous heart and a giving soul, and I say anyone who feels moved should go down to her store, wander it while things rez in, and, if you favor such, pick out an outfit by the 15th to request. At best, you get a new outfit out of it. At worst, you're upping her traffic, which may increase her store's popularity in search just a wee bit. There's no wrong outcome here.

'cause you are the ocean, and I'm good at drowning

Awake and fretting again. Awake when I should be sleeping. Awake and afraid of dreaming. Awake and pondering.

If the spider dreams come when I backslide, if they come when I respond to a touch, or a phrase, or the sound of breath between words, I would be more able to accept it. Tonight, I have no idea why I dreamed, only that I did. If it's not specifically tied to the love that left, then what do the spider dreams mean? And why did they go away--for at least a while--when I left? And why did they only return when I got close again? Why did I have one tonight when I haven't done a thing to encourage one?

I want this to be over. I want to be better. I want to stop feeling scared, and unsure, and yearning for things I lost along the way. I want my subconscious to pick another image to flay my nerves with. I want to feel less like I'm bleeding out and more like I'm healing. I want to look forward to sleep again.

More than a year later, I still can't go to a dance if I hear Duchess Gabrielle is going to be spinning the tunes. She's still an amazing DJ--I still listen to Radio Riel now and again--but I just can't bring myself to go. It's not resentment, it's not anger, it's not out of any desire for revenge. Mostly, it's just sadness. I walked away from so much of my life when I was fired, lost touch with people I genuinely cared for, and I know that's contributed largely to my isolation...but I can't get past it.

More than six months later, I'm still trying to sell that last bit of Caledonian land. Being in Caledon isn't the joy it once was, for multiple reasons, and I'm suffering a major period of disconnection from the grid anyway, for a variety of reasons as well. I'm finding it hard to create, hard to innovate, and I'm back to contemplating closing the business for good. In fact, coming this January is the yearly anniversary party for two businesses that are profoundly stalled, featuring virtually no creation of new product since last year. And I still have no idea what's going to happen then, or if we're even holding a sale, let alone a celebration.

More than eighteen months later, I'm still closing the ISC chat window more often than I'm leaving it open. People waver between being far too perky and far too prone to take offense, and I just don't have it in me to appreciate a good fight the way I used to. And most of the time, most social events just make me sigh, or shudder, and turn away in resigned frustration. I am getting profoundly lonely on the grid, but I can't bring myself to even show up at a dance to potentially ease that perception of loneliness.

And more than four years later, I think I'm finally accepting that I will never have another rez day celebration. Because I can't shake what happened after the first one.

I am stitched too deeply with regret, and layered too thickly with pain. This is going to take time, and more than I want each day, to resolve, and it won't be easy. It's not easy now. I feel as if I'm no longer moving forward, I'm just sinking in place.

So now I shore up, refocus, tabulate my successes and my failures. If I can't find my way forward, I build from here and see where we end up. I've already accepted it won't be anywhere near where I started.

I already boxed up every doll-related thing in my inventory. Maybe I need to go through and box up all the spider outfits and accessories. At least for a while. If I can't control the outer world, I control the inner. The mind writes deeply in the body; maybe forcing that disconnection from the arachnids within will push that image from my subconscious.

Yeah, I don't buy that either. But it's something new to try.

I just want something clear in all this murk and mist. Something solid, not ephemeral. Something to count on. A guidepost. A beacon. Hells, I'll take a rock kicked out of place at this point. (Though not a sign. Note to all gods who might be tuning in: I am NOT asking for a sign. Just...a nudge, maybe, towards the shore. Whatever works.)

And then I'll figure out where I am, and where I go from there. It's not like this is the first time the existential pangs have set in of an evening. It likely won't be the last either...

Sometime later, I tell him part of this. Not that I don't want to tell him all of it, just that articulation, currently, is not my strong suit. He listens, as he always does.

"Sometimes a dream is just a dream," he says. I think about that. I wrap that thought around me as I return to bed, and hopefully to sleep, believing that my dreams have more import, but needing the comfort.

"The lake is frozen over
The trees are white with snow
And all around
Reminders of you
Are everywhere I go..."

Accepting any loss is like a death in the family--there is an absence that we try to fold ourselves around, tell ourselves we are still whole and capable, and not empty in that one place. My personality, such as it is, has many empty spaces, but some of them are filled now with cobwebs, and others with weeping, and others with bars of iron and gold. I have to find a way to communicate with my subconscious, or listen more closely, while at the same time trying not to curl around the new emptiness.

It's okay to be empty, too. It's okay to suffer. I am not weak or foolish if I cannot immediately get up and launch back into the world.

And sometimes, it's just another dream, my mind playing with spider imagery because that's what my subconscious has been occupied with since Aprille. It's bound to happen. It doesn't have to mean anything more than it does already.

I think I can sleep now, for another night-turned-morning. Let's see what the morrow brings.

we got it wrong from the start

Valve hates us. (That's part one; there's also part two, part three and part four.)

From Vasha Martinek's profile (to Dysturbed Sin, natch):

On days like today, I realize that I'd give you the other gun and half my bullets. Without you having to ask. It must be love.

Wau, it must be. That's a huge compliment.

So, Winter Ventura, out of the blue today, sent me this:

Photobucket

Doesn't that look amazing on the mantle? Probably look even cooler in homes that aren't set on 100% black wood and black stone textures...but still.

Even cuter? This is the back of it:

Photobucket

Wau. Just wau. It has present radio stations (including holiday ones!), it's very low-prim, and the internal card can be modified to put in your own favorite tunesmiths. Lovely little bit of work.

You can find it at Eclectic Randomness' Healy annex store, or her main store in Kloimar. (I b'lieve her main store is Adult-verified only, but the Healy annex store isn't.)

Gift cards, btw, are available for all her holiday items, and I think everything else, so you don't have to worry about buying something and then not being able to transfer it. Go Winter!

In further news of people sending me random things, Miss sachi Vixen sent me an advance copy of her new Lena skin (at the time, not out; but, at this late date, out):

Photobucket

Just gorgeous. I meant to go back and take fancier pictures, without the cat ears and eyes, but I never got around to it. I was just standing around the land office in these. Still, this says something, I think.

Photobucket

If it looks this good in regular system light, no facelights, no special post-processing, no Photoshop enhancements...think how good it will look if you're actually in a human shape (I was in the kittyshape, naturally), and you pull a little effort together with the facelights or the post-processing.

The lips are just divine on this skin. You can go get her in the Skins section of the Adam & Even main store.

And while we're on A&E, she sent me a pack of eyes. This is taking a while to photograph, because there were a TON of things in the pack. But it's from her new fantasy eyes collection, and they're well worth a trip down to the store to check those out, too.

Cannot remember if the eyes are next to skins still, so if you go here to their lobby, there'll be a map with eyes marked. Just click that to teleport directly there. I'm going to have to go retake the eye shots, though, because a) as much as I love Winterfell, eternal twilight does not good eye pics make, and b) I can't remember which ones these were.

Save for the first pic. Those are called "Dampsong".

Lastly, I'm now a contributor for the Metaverse Daily! What does that mean? Absolutely nothing other than someone wandered over to the blog and dragged something off for republication. It's more views, I guess, and ordinarily I wouldn't mind, but there was a Twitter post in the publisher's feed that made it sound like I'd been hired as a contributor.

And, y'know, wouldn't mind that, but I certainly wouldn't volunteer for it, you know?

10 December, 2010

but, baby, you'll freeze out there--it's up to your knees out there

Potential new bug I have no idea how to report, so I'm tossing it up to anyone who wants to check it out and put it on the JIRA, or something:

In the Marketplace, when a merchant wants to pull out names of people who've bought their products, if a resident is actually named "Resident"--it just lists the first name.

Now, it took me a bit to figure this out--once I did, I realized any line that just listed one single first name would always end in Resident, it made things somewhat easier. But that's still a terrifying glitch.

But really, that's just the tip of the iceberg...

[06:18 PM] Aevalle Galicia: Good goddess, the sealife in the Sound has taken to flight
[06:19 PM] Emilly Orr: It happens when scripts are disabled. The poor dears get confused.

So, it's been a merry few hours of mayhem in Caledon this evening. Someone--actually, several someones, we're still tracking down who and why, but Lagala Galaga, and possibly alexgee2 Resident may have been involved--gave something to someone (who really should have known better) in Caledon Oxbridge, who then wore said item--and the fun began.

It locked this gentle sir in place and started sending out spam. And that's when things go haywire, because these scripted-object shouters manifested in almost all the Caledon sims. I have no idea, script-wise, how that could be done just from a worn object. Frightening and intriguing at the same time.

This isn't really about the griefing attack, though. This is about the last name of Resident. Along the way, Miss Aldrich and the honored Mr. Volare mentioned that 'Resident' is not a 'real' last name--at least, not as we've come to know it:

[05:47 PM] Rachel Aldrich: As I understand it, Resident isn't actually their last name, it is just added by viewers other than 2
[05:48 PM] Emilly Orr: I thought Resident was an official last name. I know these are not temporary accounts, because they have profiles that come up.
[05:48 PM] Emilly Orr: If you see [strandofnumbers] Guest, THOSE are temporary accounts.
[05:48 PM] Jayleden Miles: Resident only appears as the last name on the 1.23 viewer
[05:48 PM] Vivito Volare: Really? I don't see it in the list
[05:49 PM] Aevalle Galicia: Aren't the Guest ones from the new web viewer beta?[05:49 PM] Emilly Orr: That's very odd, then. Who ARE these people when they're not being Residents, then? How are their profiles coming up on 2.0?

So I looked into it. There's a fascinating passage on slnamewatch:
Latest News:

The only last name available to new residents of Second Life is Resident. All other last names have been retired. (Dwell On It describes the situation clearly.) Every new sign up, thousands per day, will get this name. The current design of the census bot has a practical limit of about 100,000 accounts under a single last name. I don't plan to redesign it. I will hit that limit in less than a week. This means soon my Total Residents figure will grow inaccurate as well. — 2010-11-20
This sounds like utter and complete frustration with the project...and potentially Second Life, as well.

[05:51 PM] Emilly Orr: http://dwellonit.taterunino.net/2010/11/19/display-names-phase-2/
[05:52 PM] Emilly Orr: According to slnamewatch--from whence Miss Nino's post came--the ONLY option new residents are now given is...Resident
[05:52 PM] Emilly Orr: With the expectation that they will soon change to a 'Display Name'

Now, this puts a whole new wrinkle into things, because--as I understood it--last names were still being handed out. So, though we can--should we choose--change our "displayed names"--f'rinstance, on viewer 2, I'm likely coming in as 'emilly.orr' instead of Emilly Orr--this still leaves us with a huge problem.

Namely...distinct names.

Before now, if Jane Telluride wanted to come into SL, she could get Jane Telsmith and be fine, unless there was a Jane Telsmith. Then, she could just scroll through the available names and find one she liked--and be Jane Omegume, or Jane Gearbox, or Jane Steamwaffle, or whatever. (No, as far as I know--saving Gearbox--these are not real last names.)

But say she comes in this month, for example. She makes an avatar. She wants it to have her name. But 'Jane Resident' is already taken. With no other last names available, she has no other choice. Sure, she can change her name after to "Jane Resident", if that's what she really wants--but she has to decide whether she's going to be xxJanexx Resident, or Jane11482 Resident, or o0Jane0o Resident, or...whatever goofy thing people come up with--in the meantime.

It is a vicious blow to creativity and innovation that we can lay directly at the feet of Linden Labs.

What I'm most afraid of, though? Is this:

[06:48 PM] Martini Discovolante: word to the wise-- if they have a douchebucket name...expect less than amenable behaviour.

For me, sure, "stupidfacebookthing Resident", "Dumbass Resident" and "babygirls814814 Resident" (actual names, all of them) are pretty obvious examples of People I Desire To Avoid in SL. But what about people who really, honestly, can't think of anything else than to tag numbers on their names--like AOL, Yahoo, and Hotmail have patiently shown them--but are otherwise good people? At this point, I see a number string behind--or in front of--a name, and my first conclusion is "knuckle-dragging Visigoth who's going to speak exclusively in lowercase textchat and bug me for sex". And this may not be the case at all.

It makes me very wary around anyone with the "Resident" name. And thanks to the Lab's bonehead decision-making processes...that's now everyone.

there, covered in ash, covered in glass

Had a very odd comment come in on the shop blog:

I fool infer from a scarcely any of the articles on your website at this very moment, and I definitely like your tastefulness of blogging. I added it to my favorites entanglement page list and will be checking stand behind soon. Cheer report register in view my site as well and fail me conscious what you think. Thanks.

I had to publish it. Had to. It was too weird to delete. But the strangest thing? Was that inference to follow their blog...which I have no way of accessing, as it was an anonymous comment.

Weird.

So a while back, Turner asked what was the deal about Minecraft, anyway? And I started writing, and got almost an entire entry before I realized--I'm going into how one plays Minecraft, now why. And I may end up publishing that at some point, but that's secondary. How has little to do with why. And why is the question a lot of people are asking, not just Turner.

Photobucket
(I finally decided to go with a round sun and moon option. Surprising how effective it is, watching it rise and fall.)

Why the draw? It's not the graphics, right? Free-to-play games now have insanely high-end graphics, so much so that many systems are starting to stagger. Even browser games are, these days, surprisingly sophisticated. So what is it about the land of cubes that draws us in?

1. Creativity.

Imagine the world as your canvas. You are the only inhabitant of a demon-haunted realm, sure, and that can be a down side, especially at night--but what you do between running from monsters and learning your way around is up to you. Make a castle. Make a fort. Make a sailing ship; make a spaceship. Recreate the planet. Or do what your instinct drives you to do--the only limits are the limits of the game itself.

Each individual map is, on average, six times more vast than Earth. Notch, the designer of the game, has said it is not an infinite map base--but that someone would need to play for approximately six years straight to go everywhere on the map. That's a lot of terrain to explore, to farm, to dig, to mine, to build.

2. Innovation.

Nearly every day, as the game is developed, someone comes up with a new way to use the game, or finds a new bug. The game is in alpha now--it's not even close to beta yet, and at times, it's glitchy as hell. Some of the glitches become major exploits, and are weeded out in the next update--and the updates are frequent. This is a living, growing thing, there's little that's static about it--and even the 'fixed' game mechanics reflect this.

I mentioned farming. You can farm wheat for bread, by harvesting grass from woodland areas. You can farm reeds in sand by the shore of the eternal sea. If you really care to, there's a way to make fences, and you could conceivably fence in a large enough area to keep track of cows, sheep and pigs that spawned. Sheep give wool which makes art (with enough wood); cows give leather (which can be used to make armor); and pigs can be killed for their meat (which, once roasted in a furnace, heals half your hearts per little piggy chop). If you can't--or don't want to--be ambitious enough to farm crops or animals, then make a fishing rod out of spider-string and wooden sticks.

If you don't want to farm, you can explore, digging down to endless caverns deep beneath the earth to do battle with the creatures of the deep. If you're really jonesing for adventure, dig deep enough to find diamonds; make a diamond pick; find lava; throw water on it; then laboriously mine out the obsidian. Ten cubes of obsidian in a rough square gets you a one-way pass to the Nether, which arrived on Hallows' Eve, and is creepy beyond all reason.

3. Competition.

I'm sure there is competition aplenty in Multiplayer mode; I wouldn't know, I never play Multiplayer. I play Single Player. Can you have competition all by yourself?

Absolutely. I have a not severe, but noticeable, fear of heights. Every time I build a tall structure, I face that fear. And it hasn't stopped me once. It's slowed me--because I can't build up that high without having that shiver down my spine. But Monolithia? More than four stories high, each story twice my height in the game, and I built it, block by block, on my own. I was the only one there; I was the only one who could. And I was able to get it done.

Or take spiders. I'm not afraid of spiders, I like spiders, but for the past six months I have had increasingly terrible spider nightmares. (I know why now, and I'm not going to go into it; suffice it to say that for someone who likes spiders, this was horrifying.) Spiders are one of the monsters in Minecraft, and they have a unnerving ability to jump directly at you and you die.

This is bad. And at first, I loathed the spiders in Minecraft, because day or night, they attacked me. But steadily, day by day, night by night, I began to overcome that atavistic fear. I learned how best to defeat them, and learned to take even death in stride.

Or let's talk jumping. For most of my life, I have been bad at jumping in both arcade and console games. In fact, in Runes of Magic, there's a perpetual Easter mini-game that I fail at, every year. Every single year. Because I can't jump up the little platforms to save my life.

In Minecraft? I'm learning to jump. I've gone from being afraid of heights to measuring distances and jumping with equanimity. It no longer bothers me.

The only one you have to beat is yourself. The only one you have to heal is yourself. Take of the world what you can use, and give back in terms of structures, trees, reeds...You can stay within the fixed terrain of the world you discover, or pave it over and build skyscrapers; it's up to you.

Why play Minecraft? Because it exists in the pure spirit of game, itself. You can eke out a meager existence in a scratch-built hovel; you can build a working computer for simple calculations. Nihilistically, you can blow everything up and start over.

Ultimately, it's entirely up to you. And that's the draw.

sing it out, girl, before they kill what tomorrow brings

Oh, the irony.

DV8 Designs is selling a steampunk holiday tree. It's copyable, modifiable (I made it bigger, and changed the colors), no transfer--and only L$75. What's more, it moves--each gear rotates, independently. And, as it's a modifiable thingy, you could likely easily toss a sound generator or a particle set-up in it. (I'm thinking of importing a handful of little silver gears and making it poof quietly.)

Go get it.

There's some really scary Krampus pictures on the Etsy blog. Still seems like such an odd tradition: instead of coal in their stocking, children who misbehave get whipped! And lo, the holiday fetish was born...

More from Adam & Eve (they've released new fantasy eyes!) and spots around and about soon. But for now, go nab that steampunk tree! It's a steal at twice the price, for all you can do with it.

[06:34 PM] Emilly Orr: We help people rent land in Solace Beach.
[06:34 PM] payawesome Resident: COOL
[06:34 PM] Emilly Orr: PLEASE STOP SHOUTING.

I'm really starting to hate that last name.

Glad I aint got class tomorrow has changed their name to Senor Boozetime.
Senor Boozetime has changed their name to PizzaHut/TacoBell.
PizzaHut/TacoBell has changed their name to Sexy Bitch.
Sexy Bitch has changed their name to Detroit Needs Pizza.

So, this seems to be God's average day:

1. Wake up.
2. Crawl into something resembling clothes.
3. Go to class.
4. Scavenge for food.
5. Go home. Start drinking.
6. Write papers.
7. Drink more.
8. Play video games.
9. Drink more.
10. Scavenge for food.
11. Fall down somewhere to sleep.

Rinse, repeat, burn. If he graduates with working brain cells, it'll be a miracle.

I went out and had a lovely form of fermented black tea called Pu-erh tea with local loves. When I came back, I saw this:

Detroit Needs Pizza: At what point
Detroit Needs Pizza: is it
Detroit Needs Pizza: impolite to kill someone?

Emilly: Definitely impolite when making love; wait until they finish, or you do
Emilly: Impolite in a staged debate
Emilly: Impolite in church
Emilly: Generally impolite in a classroom setting, though I suppose dorms don't exactly apply
Emilly: What did they do now?

Detroit Needs Pizza: brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreakan
Detroit Needs Pizza: stufffffffffff
Detroit Needs Pizza: it is comfortable

Emilly: As in you, are breaking things?

Emilly: So have good reason

Sober=Weak Nazi America is now Offline.

Seriously, I've said it before, but I can't make this stuph up. Stiv is...special, let's say. In some very...special...way.

"Whipahol". They actually call it WHIPAHOL on their ads. We are doomed as a species.

01 December, 2010

I guess he's an Xbox, and I'm more an Atari, but the way you play your game ain't fair

So, I had several ideas for the next few posts, and all of them are pushed to the back of the queue, because something bigger has just surfaced.

This is the notecard I just sent a friend:

Dyce,

This just hit the net:

I'd also read through this one:

Short version of what this means: on December 3, the Lindens will start mass-returning games that are not in compliance. If non-compliant games are set out again, the penalties range from warning the game owners to outright banning the account from EVER accessing SL again (and that includes all alternate accounts tied in with that main account or IP address).

This is sudden scary stuph and not a lot of folks seem to know about it. In short:

Any Zyngo, King Bing or other 'chance' game must have as much possibility of 'chance' removed. In other words, anything that "automates" (like Auto-Play features) must be coded out. As well, anything that offers random benefits or penalties (the angel/devils of Zyngo, the Witch/whatever else for King Bing) must be coded out.

Contact your games' manufacturers, see what they're doing to comply, and if they don't know, TELL THEM--this should have hit HUGE and be EVERYWHERE with the possibility of having all property seized and the account permanently banned, and instead, it's a footnote!

Be careful. Love from all of us,

Em

There's really not a lot on this topic anywhere--I know, I've been looking for it. Even on Twitter, there's only a couple of mentions, and that is really terrifying. Anything that has "We will BAN YOU" attached as a possible penalty should be in forty-eight foot high letters of strobing fire, as far as I'm concerned.

What to do from here: DON'T GET BANNED. That's the short form. But specifically, how to avoid that? Here's a list.
  • IF YOU OWN GAMES like Zyngo, King Bing, Jewels, or other variants: CHECK THEM. Do they have an auto-play button? Take it back. Do they have random Angels, Devils, Witches, or Fairies (or local graphic on different games) that pop up? Take them back. DO NOT put them back out; contact the makers of your games instead, and if they don't know what you're talking about, for the love of all gods TELL THEM.
Same goes for players:
  • IF YOU PLAY GAMES like Zyngo, King Bing, Jewels, or other variants: CHECK THEM. Do they have an auto-play button? DO NOT PLAY THEM. Because this one hits both player AND owner of the games; if you are seen playing a non-compliant game after December 3rd, your account--and all alternate accounts tied to your IP address--risk being banned PERMANENTLY from Second Life as well. DO NOT go back to those places to play those games; instead, search for places with COMPLIANT games, or, contact the venue owners and, if they don't know what you're talking about, for the love of all gods TELL THEM.
The last line of my notecard applies to everyone reading this. Be careful out there. It's getting shaky on the grid again.

(Also, anyone reading this who teaches or wanders through Caledon Oxbridge, and other teaching centers--TELL YOUR PEOPLE. New friends on the grid FREQUENTLY get pulled in to Zyngo palaces for that chance to strike it rich; TELL THEM they're also risking being banned if they play non-compliant games. I hate the take-no-prisoners tone of that letter, and for people like Tateru Nino, if you find out this is all a hoax, TELL ME--but right now? I'd better be safe than sorry.

Don't get banned for something you can avoid doing. It's not worth it.

heart full of blues, space and time

While I decide if it's too late to back-date posts that contain the last of the Hair Fair pics, I got hit with this when I was listening...
