keep it coming 'cause I'm prepared to burn

I am so behind on my haunt reviews this year, but I'm starting with...well, mine!

There's more specifics over on the store blog, but I'm announcing it in both places. The past week, I have been spending nearly every hour possible in Twilight Tears, building a haunted house from scratch.

It's my first haunted house on the grid. It's not perfect. And it's not a spooky haunt--at least to me, it's a delightful autumnal stroll. But I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

You start here:

Hunt House,haunted house,haunted,horror,halloween,Second Life,virtual worlds,building,texturing

Yes, it's a door. It has an "ENTER" sign above it, that might help. Also a pumpkin tree. And a grave with floating ghosts.

(I love the grave, actually. Click the mound of earth--you're a zombie! Click the headstone--you get to float with the ghosts!)

Hunt House,haunted house,haunted,horror,halloween,Second Life,virtual worlds,building,texturing

It's me, so of course there are poses scattered here and there, and photo ops.

Hunt House,haunted house,haunted,horror,halloween,Second Life,virtual worlds,building,texturing

And yes! Some things move! Like this fellow. He won't trigger unless you get close enough for him to reach out and--

Hunt House,haunted house,haunted,horror,halloween,Second Life,virtual worlds,building,texturing

Go up level by level until you reach the attic. And there, you will find a lovely Victorian lady...who still thinks she's alive. Poor dear. But she's very loquacious, and just...dying...to talk with you.

(There's a door to the side that will let you come back down to the main store, so you don't have to retrace your steps.)

I'm looking forward to this. I may tweak some things, as I said, but really--it's good to go! Just trip by the parcel in front of the main store, and you're good to go.

Enjoy...

as long as we blindly obey and do exactly what they say

So, you're a Dolcett girl. But you want to show off the best cuts of your to-be-slowly-cooked form, and you're just not sure how?

Don't worry, there's hope. So to speak. L$50 at World of Water.

(Note from the Editrix: lo, these many months later, I do not have a back-up copy of that image, and more importantly, at the World of Water link is a Gorean purveyor of prim plants and rustic furnishings. So no go there.

(To...erm...help any seekers of this product in future, I...well. I have no idea, really. But there's a girl roaster on the Marketplace, a Japanese brand for meatgirls, and two different tattoo packs, a meat suit in heavy black printing, and a meat suit in red printing. All from different makers, I think. Hope that...helps?)

MOVING ON. OMG PLEASE.

So, Emerald's finding itself in quite controversial waters of late. They had plans to resurrect the extraordinarily abuse-worthy rating system in SL (though apparently later they scrapped the idea); they hired on Qarl Linden (followed almost immediately by LordGregGreg Beck's departure due to security concerns), they were already in hot waters over data mining accusations (including ones clear back to May of this year), in addition to an increase in crashes due to one of the viewer's internal .dll files, and as if that's not enough, there's also potential userdata issues with that one .dll file/library set anyway.

Whuf. Lots of bad things going on.

So I switched to Imprudence, for several reasons:
  • they've implemented Viewer 2 features in a Viewer 1 structure (honestly, all I really wanted)
  • they've stabilized their platform
  • they've altered the color scheme to be less nighmarishly fuschia or solid monochrome
  • there's still a pie menu feature
  • there are more fun Emerald-like bits of coding involved (like making my avatar phantom during griefing attacks/weapons fire), and
  • they've implemented both the legacy Pie menus, AND HTTP texture fetching
  • they've included LL's own internal recording system (still enabled, but no longer used in the main client)
Whee!

So far, in running it this morning, it hasn't crashed, slowed, blipped, dropped any group chats, or malfunctioned in any way. I'm sure it will--I am Death to all technology, after all, by unfortunate nature--but for right now? Purring like a kitten with cream. Yay.

In the meantime, more fun adventures with Alamunara Darkfire. I admit, I started this one:

[16:06] Emilly Orr: Alamunara, you seem to have 1) confused me with my landlady, Midnight Bohemia (Midnight and Emilly: not the same person, two different people), and 2) ticked her off somehow. So if you really want to come back to Lady Disdain, let me know, I'll see if she'll unban you from the parcel my shop's on. But she's banned you from her castle. What did you do?
[16:06] Second Life: User not online - message will be stored and delivered later.

Which was fine, I was needed in the sales office anyway. But nearly an hour later, he (yes! It's a he!) got in world:

[16:57] Alamunara Darkfire: ??
[16:58] Alamunara Darkfire: ohh ya i wanted 2 look in it and i didnt no it was a house

I find this very hard to believe, but I'm trying to be polite, here. Ish.

[16:59] Emilly Orr: Well, to be fair, it's hard to tell what are businesses, and what aren't, on that sim.
[16:59] Emilly Orr: But just for walking in, she wouldn't ban you. So what happened?
[16:59] Alamunara Darkfire: ikr
[17:00] Emilly Orr: ikr?
[17:00] Alamunara Darkfire: its means i no right

So...not only can he not spell...but he fails spelling even when trying to spell the phrase out, rendering it "inr" instead of "ikr" and while we're on the topic, I HATE NETSPEAK.

*coughs* Sorry. Moving on--

[17:00] Emilly Orr: Still doesn't make sense
[17:00] Emilly Orr: Do you mean "I know"?
[17:00] Alamunara Darkfire: yes
[17:00] Emilly Orr: Ah.
[17:00] Alamunara Darkfire: the castle looked kool and thought it belonged to bloodlines

But of COURSE. Because ALL castle-like structures MUST belong to Bloodlines vamps!

Gods, I loathe those people. Then he sent me a port:

[17:01] Emilly Orr blinks
[17:01] Emilly Orr: Why are you porting me to Twilight Tears?
[17:01] Alamunara Darkfire: its my home
[17:02] Emilly Orr: You bought a parcel on that sim?
[17:02] Alamunara Darkfire: ???????????

Seriously. Is any word in that sentence hard to figure out? In fact, with the exception of 'parcel', no word in that sentence is over a single syllable!

[17:02] Emilly Orr tries to break it down into simpler words
[17:02] Emilly Orr: Are you renting on Twilight Tears now?
[17:03] Alamunara Darkfire: no i own it my fvriend made it for me
[17:03] Emilly Orr: No, no.
[17:03] Alamunara Darkfire: ?!?!?!?

Yeah, my saying 'no, no' was confusing enough to warrant four question marks and three exclamation points. Excitable, or something.

[17:03] Emilly Orr: Are you the one who rents the land that your house is on?
[17:03] Alamunara Darkfire: yes
[17:03] Emilly Orr: Ah.
[17:04] Emilly Orr: Okay, but I'm not on viewer 2; the maps.secondlife feature doesn't always work for me.
[17:04] Alamunara Darkfire: k

So I clicked 'Teleport'. And wouldn't you know it, another cool thing about the new Imprudence--it translates maps.secondlife.com-based SLUrls just fine! Yay!

I ported, and ended up on a large, square, sky-pattered platform supporting a large chest, and an inverted layer cake. Freakiest thing I'd seen in SL in quite some time. Apparently it was the house his friend built for him.

But it turns out that the chest was apparently a chest-shaped coffin? Or...something...because Alamunara popped out of it like toast.

Unfortunately, past this point everything skews, a bit--I had more to discuss, and pictures, even, but my hard drive wiped in mid-operation, and...I'm still trying to reconstruct things. I've lost all graphics program access, I can't install programs for some reason, and...yeah. It's a mess.

In talks with my landlady, though, her position is clear: she's not banning him from the sim, as an estate manager for that sim; she's banning him from her parcels, as an owner of those parcels. I think that's fair, actually. If he gets out of line, she'll estate-ban him, because she's already in no mood to deal with someone who started out saying 'You have all these rooms, I'mma stay in YOUR house. Bloodlines RULEZ'. It's not completely impossible to work up from there, but it's going to take a lot of concerted effort...

...which frankly, I don't think he has in him. Still, I think this really is the last of it.

I hope.

go, go, get away now; go, go, run away now--

So, some general thread discussion today, mostly from SLUniverse.

From Joshua Nightshade, outlining the general problem of CDS:
"It's a security system that works similarly to Banlink. Through some mechanism that only the CDS devs know, it purports to 'detect' avatars who are logged in to viewers with copybot functionality, adding them to a centralised database that people who use CDS access through security devices. When an avatar on this list comes into range, they're booted/banned from the sim.

"Except that it doesn't really work, and by this point all the detection mechanisms that could have worked in the past have been obfuscated by people still making copybot viewers.

"It's about as effective as those !quit copybot protection things. That hasn't worked since the very first version of copybot YEARS ago, but people still put them out and ignore comments saying that they don't do anything.

"Similarly, CDS' devs are quick to accuse people who point out the fact that their system is worthless are probably just copybotters in the first place. Because, obviously, that's the only reason why they would criticise such a perfect and fool-proof security system."
That's what it boils down to in essence. Basically, if you've ever logged in on a 'suspect' viewer--even once--and you were within range of a CDS scanner--which were silently propagated across the grid for at least eight months prior to release, and possibly up to a full year--then you might well be banned from stores using CDS. You usually won't know until you go to a store whether or not you're in their database. And the stores generally don't tell you they're using CDS.

From Lil Hapmouche:
"CDS is claimed to be a 100% accurate way of detecting rippers entering the scan range. It's based on a gridwide network sharing scan results. Those results are based on data collections done within an unknown timeframe, checking for the [legality] of the viewer you were detected to be using. Whether or not it is capable of linking alt accounts is a different question.

"What exactly is scanned for has not been confirmed and is up to speculation. Rumours about cooperation with other facilities do apply. Merchants running a CDS can set various options including local unbanning, but hardly anyone lets their customers know that they are targeted by the tool upon their visit.

"To prevent the system from scanning you, turn off any settings that are likely to trasmit data like your IP address to anyone. Media is the main target."
And that's become the big buzzword over the grid--that "somehow", "some people" can gank your IP info from mis-set Preference settings, including media. Is it true? Not sure yet. But that's what people are saying.

So here we go, a little back-and-forth:

From Joshua again:
"I don't think that illusory protection is worth anything. If you want illusory protection, make a prim scarecrow and put it in the front of your store. Why pay someone to use a system that is ripping you off?

"It's not about information that you give out when you go online. It's not just the IP address they snag. They snag a number of details about your avatar as well and in conjunction with things like IP addresses, this can be added up to a seriously dangerous level of detail. It's terrifying enough when it's LL or Facebook, but those are companies with reputations at stake and legal jurisdictions to adhere to. The CDS/Emerald devs don't give a shit. They've had breeches of security not just by script kiddies who are pissed off, but former developers who have left and went the scorched earth approach along the way. There's no safeguards in place to protect this sensitive information, nor is there any interest by CDS/Emerald devs to even acknowledge what they're scraping and why they're scraping it."
That's pretty much my feeling, yes. Though I should state, as Miss Star Fairymeadow brought this up yesterday, that apparently, there is no direct connection to Emerald from Gemini CDS--save for Skill Hax working as a developer on the project. I had thought Emerald was behind CDS, as well--along with a section of the grid--but apparently we are wrong in this.

Humps then said:
"It matters not one jot what I think or any of you think. People will do what people will do. Merchants will continue to try anything they can to protect themselves, customers will still feel like they are being targetted unfairly. Data Mining folks will continue to mine data. Rippers will continue to rip."
And, ultimately, that's where it ends--it doesn't matter what we do to stop people--criminals will commit crime, that's what they do. Honorable people will remain honorable because that's what they do.

The rest of us--as ever--lie somewhere in between. And we struggle accordingly.

Dusan Writer explains it all. Tell me, gentle readers, when your brain falls out from an overdose of impossible irony. I think for me it was about five sentences in.

Overheard in passing:

[18:32] Lysana McMillan: Yeah, it's SL. If they can't hack the weird, they need to surrender the space.
[18:33] Emilly Orr: Definitely.

Apropos of nothing in particular, Fawkes and I are watching Top Chef on Hulu. The episode we're up to dealt with one of the shining lights of molecular gastronomy. I have to admit, I'm fascinated with the concept, but on the other hand, I am not in the right tax bracket to go out and try it.

So I might have to dig up some recipes, see if they're capable of converting to home versions, maybe. Like some of these. Who knows?

On to very silly things. Out of the blue last night, I got this:
[13:31] Alamunara Darkfire: hello
Being me, I a) saw it forty-five minutes after it was posted, and b) sent this back:
Hello. And you would be?
Because I didn't know her from Ruth, frankly. And she never answered, anyway.

Several hours later, I drift into world, and her name pops up on the IM screen. Right, I think. Maybe she'll answer now. It was profoundly to be hoped, anyway:
[2010/08/19 17:19] Alamunara Darkfire: (Saved Thu Aug 19 13:31:16 2010) hello
[2010/08/19 17:20] Emilly Orr: So, now in world. Hello?
[2010/08/19 17:20] Second Life: User not online - message will be stored and delivered later.
Ah. So she's not in world, fine, I'll go about my day.

Several patches of in world and out of world occur as I go about designing things, checking them, coming into world, doing more store work--you know, the usual. Then I get an IM again:
[19:01] Alamunara Darkfire: hi
[19:01] Emilly Orr: Okay. So hi followed by what? What's your question?
[19:03] Alamunara Darkfire: notin i just wanted 2 SAY HI
Now, I'm fairly sure she hit the capslock by mistake, but still, it irked me, after several hours of wondering what she wanted. I got snippy:
[19:05] Emilly Orr: WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?
[19:05] Emilly Orr: I mean seriously
[19:06] Emilly Orr: Did I meet you somewhere? Did you come by the shop? What?

[19:06] Alamunara Darkfire: what r u talkin bout
[19:06] Emilly Orr: That's my question
[19:07] Alamunara Darkfire: well i g2g bye i guess
[19:07] Emilly Orr: You confuse me deeply
And off she went--or, at the least, I didn't hear anything from her again.

So I pulled her profile. This is her bio:
i am a t vampire ruledd by the king and queen of vampires in my clan
Oh, for the love of all gods...She's BLOODLINES. Of COURSE she's stupid. I am trying to give her some credit, but damn...

She's got three groups: "Eternal Isle" (run by the Bloodlines clan "Eternal Flames"); "GOOD FELLAS FOREVER" (it's a dance club, owned by the same av who owns the "Eternal Isle" group); and "Lords of Gahenna" (yep, that's how they spelled it). Her first life section?
death is nothing more than a heart that dosent beat
Yeah...Typos, lowercase and all. That's all she's got on her profile.

I figure, I'm moving on with my life, she's been my Freak of the Week, we can go back to the status quo, now. Right? But that's not where this ends. She also IMed a friend of mine--the friend, in fact, who has the castle next to my shop in Twilight Tears, the friend who's currently donating the shop space from which Lady Disdain operates:
[13:36] Alamunara Darkfire: hello
[13:37] Alamunara Darkfire: im ssoooo sry but i need a place to stay and this is the only house i could find and u have tuns of rooms if want me out i will do so

The. HELL. The only house she could find? Where the hell was she LOOKING?!?

She followed that staggering bit of brain-death with offering to friend said land donor:
Alamunara Darkfire has offered to become your friend in Second Life.

Would you be my friend?

Log in to accept or decline the offer.
My friend has every intention of banning her neophyte ass from every parcel she owns. I'm going to ponder whether I want her not specifically banned from my shop; if so, that's the only parcel my gracious landlady will lift the ban from. And my friend doesn't irk easily, but squatters? That's one of the things that cause instant annoyance.

"Good thing I don't have a sex bed in the castle," she told me. Yeah, no lie.

I'll have to check how old this twidgit is when I next get in world. Because seriously...the only house she could find? And she thought I was my friend? So she can't even distinguish between avatars?!?

Friends and neighbors, I had my moments in the early days, including undressing on open balconies in small Western towns, but I was never that stupid.

03 August, 2010

not a soul on the ice, only me skating fast

night, lift up the shades
let in the brilliant light of morning

spider
spider spider spider
all those legs and lurking in the dark
staring at me

I don't mind the staring
I mind what it's trying to do
I mind what these dreams mean
I mind what they're telling me

but steady there now
for I am weak and starving for mercy

is my subconscious that unaware?
does anyone think I don't know what the risks are?
does anyone think I don't know
just how much I stand to lose?

I step forward
I step--
one step, one step, walking forward

walking on dying embers and glass shards, diamond-bright and splintered
walking on broken bones that turn and twist underfoot
walking, even if I have to walk in ever-widening circles
walking forward

sleep has left me alone
to carry the weight of unravelling where we went wrong

moving because it's what I have, it's what I fall back on
like breathing, even though I keep forgetting to breathe
late at night I will wake myself with huge inrushes of air
and I know
I've forgotten to inhale again

it's all I can do to hang on

rubble beneath my feet
primed to turn an ankle
skeleton keys and flanges, wood and stone, carved and grown
grains of sand, grains of wheat, grains of hard red rice
sharp hard shattered chunks of craze-cracked green glass
blue and brown frosted pebbles
worn smooth by the endless tumble in a turmoil sea

to keep me from falling
into old familiar shoes

splashes of color on the uneven ground
as if some great dying beast who bled liquid paint
staggered through

it has been at least two months
since I talked to any of my old friends
it has been longer still since I talked to any old loves, barring one
there are tremors of finality in the air

everything changes
everything falls apart

I have severed ties with the Consulate
I have very nearly severed ties with Caledon
I go back and forth on whether to sell my last remaining parcel
I'm not sure these days what's keeping me there

love has made me a fool
it set me on fire and watched as I floundered

no social activities, even the ones I wanted to attend
the last two weeks have been barren of so much
I've talked to a few people, but always, always
at a distance

winnowing
through the life I'm leading
deciding what's nourishing
and what's chaff
what I can discard
what I must retain
(at all costs? any cost? on a whim?)

unable to speak
except to cry out and wait for your answer

a change is needed
it's been too long, stuck in place, frozen, shrinking
from the demands of movement

I am going to rebuild the store, in my time away from
building on the last sim in Solace
and refocus my energies on what I told myself
I was going to focus on six months ago

can't stop to feel myself losing control
but deep in my senses I know

third time charming
or something like that
and we'll see what happens then

(Lyrics taken in small uneven sections from Sarah McLachlan's Stupid.)

don't ever drink soup with a knife

You know how you go home, sometimes, and you find someone's been rezzing things out on your parcel, and it's just this ugly eyesore set of boxes, or avatar bits, or a penis hovercraft, or something insane and ridiculous? And you have that mild fit of cursing people as you're returning things, and wondering what would possess some people to own these objects, let alone rez them out and leave them on your property?

Second Life,fire,Hell,vehicles,weirdness

The Hellbike. Currently sitting on my shop parcel, twenty-two prims of fire and chains and chrome-skull struts.

I am totally tempted to leave it there. I mean, seriously--the former owner parked it behind a cemetary fence, next to a castle and a tree dripping spiderwebs and glitter. In all honesty is there a better place for this?

Well, mayhap something to do with gothic motorcycles, maybe, but--still! Hellbike!

In chapter 426 of the unofficial guide to Hollywood Cashing In, I bring you advance notice of The Mummy Online. Yes, apparently this is not an unfounded rumor, Universal is translating the small franchise of movies into a free-to-play MMO.

Other than telling you that, I have no idea what to say. Honestly, if Stargate: Worlds tanked, if The Matrix Online tanked....seriously, what chance do budding archeologists fighting flesh-eating beetles have?

[16:20] lulu Oller: Hi Twisties....I have aquestion which i am stumped on....Im seeking if anyone might know...knows who made the saint andrew collar , I am the Empress of Russia and would like to aquire this...but i know I saw at twisted

One bit of advice: If you're (roleplaying) the Empress of Russia...LEARN TO SPELL. Jesus. I know it's a pet peeve but Second Life is still MOSTLY a text-based environment. One or two typos along the way, fine. CONSISTENT inability to spell MOST SIMPLE WORDS is not, and if your RP involves the portrayal of royalty...well, actually, you'd probably be accurate for most royalty at the time...I guess, carry on then.

(Oh, but if you're curious about what she wanted...you know, being Empress of Russia and all?

[16:43] Nighty Goodspeed: I found it!

Let that be a lesson to everyone--never do drugs during combat. They'll get you killed. This public service message brought to you by stoned collage kids on Runes.

More zombie coverage--I bring you one of the best zombie ad campaigns ever, from Sweden, and from AMC, a really great (if small) gallery of zombie makeups. Very well done.

And finally, why didn't this ever happen? It seems terribly clear.

Yes, my mind was scattered today. I didn't get a lot of sleep. Expect actual content later!
