the opposite of love's indifference

(from the loss album and the Where There Is Life blog)

there's a chair, in my head,
on which I used to sit
took a pencil and I wrote
the following on it:
'now there's a key,
where my wonderful mouth used to be

'dig it up, and throw it at me
dig it up, and throw it at me'...

(from the loss album and Shepherd's Notes blog)

where can I run to?
where can I hide?
who will I turn to,
now I'm in a virgin state of mind?

(from the loss album; the Pandora marble sculpture by John Gibson,
circa 1860, in  the Victoria and Albert Museum in London;

got a knife to disengage
the voids that I can't bear,
to cut out words I've got written,
on my chair, like:

'do you think I'm sexy?
'do you think I really care?

'can I burn the mazes I grow?
'can I? I don't think so.'

(from the loss album; adapted from image seen in the Triumph of the Spirit blog)

where can I run to?
where can I hide?
who will I turn to,
now I'm in a virgin state of mind?

'can I burn the mazes I grow?
'can I? I don't think so.'

(from the loss album; bronze statue of a mourner in Greenwood
Cemetery; picture adapted from original taken by Brecht Bug. All Rights Reserved.)

where can I run to?
where can I hide?
who will I turn to,
now I'm in a virgin state of mind?
a virgin state of mind
a virgin state of mind
a virgin state of mind...

(Song is "Virgin State of Mind" from K's Choice.)

I'd forgotten I was still logged in to Steam on my main engine. Off the grid, in those spaces apart from pixels, I'd suffered an injury, and had spent long hours coaxing every single byte of power I could out of a less-than-fully-powered netbook, to run Second Life when I had the opportunity.

There is a small thread of admiration that, even in the midst of cheap intoxication, he felt the urge to warn me. About...out-drinking foreigners. Okay, so it's something of an unnecessary warning; I never try to out-drink anyone these days.

Of course, God is in college now. And frequently is challenged by those around him to do very silly things. I suppose it makes sense...from his point of view.

Also, don't look up "dook" unless you're searching the term on a ferret-specific site. Trust me. You don't want to know what it means.

we're setting the fires to light the way, we're burning it all to begin again

I am trapped in this place, and do not know whether I trapped myself, or was led here. Were my own actions to blame, or the actions of the larger world? I listen to Leonard Cohen and Rufus Wainright, Black Veil Brides and the Indigo Girls, and reflect on fidelity.

In these moments I think, am very nearly compelled to think, of Sigyn.

There are those who say Sigyn is an insignificant goddess, and to be fair, there are personages in the Norse pantheon that are much more vibrant, much larger than any life, than she. It's also true that she is not known for any great pronouncements, any life-changing philosophies--save for her life. She changed by not changing. She changed by refusing to give up what she knew was right.

There is a lesson here. I'm just not sure what it is.

("Loki und Sigyn" (1863) by Mårten Eskil Winge. Originally oil on canvas.)

At times I feel alone; I am told that I am not. I cling to the words over the feelings, because my feelings have betrayed me in this time, my assurances about myself fall flat and empty, meaningless on such stark ground. But I endure. If nothing else, I endure.

There are tales that speak of Sigyn as if she was an alien to Asgardian culture, even though her lineage is known. There are rumors from later prophets that muse on this apparent contradiction:
"I know that. I see it, in the threads. You could no more harm her than I could." [Njord] sighed heavily and came to sit opposite the slender [Loki]. "But you're curious about her origin." The sea-king offered him a drink and settled back, eyes dark. "My son found her a few years ago, not long after this hall had been built. She couldn't have been more than four or five years old, a bruised, hungry, disheveled thing, crying in the forest. Ingvi found her when He was out walking. She tried to run from him at first but was too scared and too weak to get very far, and he has a way with children. He calmed her and brought her to me." He smiled a little, a smile tinged with pain. "We don't know where she comes from... I suspect She's..." he hesitated searching for a term in the Aesir language that would not be derogatory "forgive me, a half breed." He inclined his head to the man. "I've always suspected the child born of an Aesir and Jotun union," His mouth tightened "and abandoned as a result. She's delicate... and too gentle to thrive amongst the Jotuns and yet if she is indeed part Jotun, would not necessarily be welcomed by some of the more insular Aesir." He snorted. "I don't know. I could be wrong. She could not tell us." He admitted. "What we do know is that she was mistreated and abandoned."
~from the Jotunbok, "Loki and Sigyn's First Meeting"
Whether married in or of the same blood as the Aesir, or the Vanir; what is sure and certain is that she did not look the same as others in Asgard, nor act like them. Her province was flowers and fruit, plants and herbs; theirs was learning and warcraft, song and story. She could blend nearly invisibly into surrounding foliage. She may have possessed pointed ears, as Loki had; accounts vary, and vary wildly.

But what is clear is that she was perceived as Other, as Not of the Blood--though again, by marriage or adoption, fosterage or birth, she was in the same bloodline.

(Built in 1996 in Svendborg; Alpha Diesel on a total of 4000 bhp; 51 ton BP.)

I have felt Other most of my life. There have been very, very few people that I can say, honestly, even to myself if not to them: You understand me. There are fewer that I trust without hiding, without shielding, showing whatever I happen to feel at the time. Even in those moments, with people I would trust with a knife to my throat, I hide; I conceal; I misdirect.

It is my nature, and while I fight it, in times of distress it is more than what I
do, it is who I am. Perhaps this is how it will always be. Perhaps no one has ever been able to see me and see the true face of me, the true feelings; because I am so adept at concealing myself away.

Sigyn--or so the stories tell--married Loki young; even if this is not true, she was reputed to look much younger than her actual age. I get the strong feeling that she was perpetually dismissed for this, sent from councils and conversations on the pretext that she was "too young" to understand.

Even after birthing sons. Even after demonstrating her own powers. Who we look like, we become; who we act like, we are.

I am struggling to understand. To make sense of everything. A follows B follows C follows D, but there are gaps, and there are shifting letters, shifting ground underneath my feet. It's my own instability that's being addressed, I know this, but how long do I wait for things to settle? How long should I?

And will they?

She bore him two sons, Narvi, the second-born, and Váli, named after Odin's son of the same name. They were strong and clean-limbed, but there was prejudice sunk deep, blood-deep, bone-deep in the Aesir. Having seen Loki's children with Angrboða, a female Jotun, and having named them monsters, they waited for Váli and Narfi to show traits of Loki's "monstrous blood".

Sigyn, for her part, was mostly pitied, or despised. Is it any wonder she did not socialize more freely with the society in Asgard? A child-bride sold as a pawn, at best; a monster in her own right, for not being 'of the blood'; what did she have in common, at all, with people who saw her in this light?

Loki,Loke,Sigyn,Norse,Nordic,mythology,Eckersberg,painting,oil,canvas,Aesir
("Loke og Sigyn", painted in 1810 by Christopher Wilhelm Eckersberg. Originally oil on canvas.)

There are words straining to be said. There are ideas begging to be articulated, if only so I can see the shape of my thoughts by the flavor the words leave in the air. I waver between holding everything back and saying too much. I don't seem to be able to find a steady, middle ground.

The perception is that Loki lied, which he did not do. The perception is that he killed Baldr, which he did not do. The perception is that he was a divisive, unwanted, invasive element in Aesir culture, when in fact he was the blood brother of Odin, who loved him--at least, until Baldr died. Which, by fiat and prophecy, Baldr had to do to become the golden leader of the new gods. People--even the Aesir--forget this, and far too often.

Histories fade, memories fade, everything gets confused, or maybe that's just me. I'm saying things out of order, I'm not saying the things I want to say, I'm saying things I don't want to say, and I have no idea if it's through artifice or genuine unknowing. All I know is, I just want things to work. To work out. And I have no idea how to do that.

Perhaps that's the first step in all of this: admitting that I have no clue about where I'm going, anymore, and what I'm going to do when I get there. Maybe it's also admitting I might need help in figuring it all out.

There are many ways to take a prophecy of oncoming demise. Some parents magnify all good things, reinforcing that it is simply the time that cannot be avoided; ensuring that their child knows love and joy and care until the end.

Frigga did not do this. She was fearful and arrogant; for her son was perfect, and he would stay with her forever. So she made the whole of the world bargain for her son--all save the mistletoe, because it was a parasite, and would never amount to anything. And Baldr grew up, brash and boastful, knowing nothing could kill him, knowing himself to be immortal.

All the time the drumbeat of the prophecy, that Baldr must die, that the natural world itself hung in the balance until he did. And that that very perfection, that bright shining gold of him, was supposed to fade, for death to sink into his bones, and make him humble, and thus he could rise and lead the new gods with a merry heart and an understanding nature.

The whole of the world, Frigga risked, out of misguided pride.

Sigyn,mythology,philosophy,books,self-published,Norse,Nordic
("Sigyn: Lady of the Staying Power" was written by Galina Krasskova and published by Asphodel Press. A passage from the back of the book states "She gathers broken things, and people, to her breast to heal.")

I too, have pride, but it is steadily evaporating. There may be such a thing as an excess of humility; if there is, I'm not there yet. But I'm not sure how much farther I have left to fall, before a total loss of self-integrity.

Is that a good thing? I'm too close to it to tell.

Baldr held a challenge, his ego overwhelming his common sense--and not for the first time. He invited everyone, including Höd, who was blind. Höd was an amazing archer--what he fired at, he hit, with or without his vision. Admittedly, Loki knew this, and watched as he shot arrow after arrow at Baldr, while Baldr laughed.

Then Loki handed him an arrow with a point carved from the lowly, dismissed mistletoe, the single plant o'er all the earth that Frigga never bothered to extract the bargain from. Höd lined it up. Baldr urged him on. The Aesir watched as the arrow flew true--and struck, and killed Baldr on the spot.

The prophecy fulfilled, Loki slipped away, but his closeness to Höd did not go unmarked. Höd was not blamed--and why would he be? Baldr asked him to fire. But Loki was, all because he saw the loophole--and knew the prophecy must be fulfilled.

Skaldenmet,Sigyn,art,Loki,serpent,drawing,painting,Norse,Nordic,German,mythology
(From Skaldenmet, a German translation of the 1999 poem "Sigyn Talks To Her Husband" by Laura Gjovaag. Artist unknown; at a guess, pencil and ink on board, but I could be wrong.)

I am also tired. I am still far too fragile, but the air around me swirls with confusion and unease, and it's nearly all of my making. When the talks begin, what will I say? When the talks begin, will I know how to listen? When the talks begin...when will the talks begin?

Loki, sensing the change in the air, and his quick fall from 'tolerated' to 'abhorred' status, spurred on by Frigga, escaped to the mountains with his sons and his wife. He pondered ways in which he could be caught, for every form of escape he had. He was working on a way out of a fishing net, as a sleek-flanked salmon, when the Aesir climbed the mountain. Quickly, he transformed and threw the net in the fire, before seeking the stream and fins again; but alas, in this, he had outsmarted himself; Odin saw the net, pieced the making together, and caught him, held him in strong unyielding arms.

A cave was found, deep and dark. A serpent was found whose venom was so strong, it could affect the gods themselves. The serpent was trapped above three stone slabs, each pierced with a hole, set on edge. Dark magics were employed that changed Váli into a wolf; the abrupt, unwanted change drove him mad. He turned on his brother, Narfi, tearing him to pieces, and ran deep into the cave, never to be seen again.

And these gods, these bright and shining walkers of the Rainbow Bridge, drew out Narfi's entrails, using the entrails of Sigyn and Loki's child to bind him across the three raised edges of the stone, whereupon they tightened and turned into iron.

Imagine. Loki feels betrayal? Yes. Anger? Yes. Rage, and even hurt? Yes.

What does Sigyn feel? These people who have never accepted her as one of them, have just killed one of her sons outright, driven the other mad, bound her husband in magicked chains--and Odin had the audacity to turn to her, after, and say all she had to do was walk away from her husband--just walk away--and she would be accepted among the shining throng.

Tell us he is not your husband, he said. You will be a maid again, and live with us, and we will never refer to him more.

And Sigyn--pale, Other, different Sigyn--said no. You bind my husband, she said, I will stay with him. You reject my husband, you reject me. Go home to your wives, and your husbands; leave me to mine.

And there she stands, month into year into decade into century into millenia, time slowly grinding her to sinew and bone. She stands, holding a rough bowl above her husband's eyes, to catch the venom of the by-now maddened serpent. She only leaves his side when she must empty the bowl into the darkest reaches of the cave. And in those moments, only the howls of her husband can be heard over the howling of her transformed son.

The poison drips, adds to the burden
In my bowl. It fills with revenge.
You feel the drops when I leave
To empty the bowl
Falling into your eyes.
Your body shudders, shakes the ground
That you are held to,
Gripped by the last embrace
Of our son.

Laura Gjovaag speaks as if she were there; in that cave, in that trembling body. Enduring, enduring because it is all she has, enduring because it is all she can do. To protect her love and husband as best she can.

Do the gods see that you will break the binds?
Do they know the pain that will make you fight?
Do they care that I am the one who holds Ragnarok away?

But the gods do not think of such things. They think of the loss of Baldr, of the bright and shining golden son, whose loss has made Frigga bitter and grieving-grey. They think of justice done. They do not think that they, themselves, crafted their demise.

Oh, Loki, my husband,
My arms are tired.

And I can guarantee they do not think of Sigyn.

I think of her. In these moments when stress and weakness diminish me, I cling to that image, that image that has inspired so much art, so many different interpretations, as the world spins on. I think of her.

I am not that embattled lady, growing older in the dark; I am not driven half-mad by the will to stand and not lose my own sense of self to the howls in the black. But my soul is on its knees, and if this means I must stop, now, and not press forward, not keep walking at any cost...then that is what I do. I have the serpent's spite with Sigyn's guiding endurance; occasionally, I am the wanderer in outer shadow. But I will make this work.

And perhaps, the world will move to where I sit, instead of me walking forward in the world. And I will regain that sense of closeness, which is all I truly wanted. Perhaps that is my lesson in all of this reflection; that we have reached another time to pause, and reinforce, and sit, hands on knees, prepared for the universe to speak.

I'm waiting. This, too, is what I do.

don't give up, you still have us

Photobucket

all night clawing at the closed door

sliding down, farther and farther
ending up curled against it, no greater warmth to be found
why am I here again?

Photobucket

the walls go up when we feel threatened
when we feel hurt
when we feel ill-used
the walls go up and the wariness
increases behind them
why are we here again?

Photobucket

Karma Police playing in the background
trying not to take it as an omen
but we still have this
love and this
friendship and this--
maybe we need to be here again

Photobucket

crushed and flying
paradox, dichotomy
the door, this door, your walls, mine
raging against the closing of the wall
cracked pitted, smooth worn
with no hope of entry

Photobucket

sitting at the door
chill fingers trying to grasp for any gap
any breach in your defenses
standing, turning, seeking other ways in
and being surprised enough
when you open your door
to fall into your arms

Photobucket

the walls may rise again, yes
the door may be closed again, yes
but for now I am through it
for now I have found you
and for now that is all that matters

Photobucket

let all arguments end thus
and I shall be happy
and bless your name in all my temples

the past is gone but something might be found to take its place

Just a couple of things for now, I'm needed in world for a discussion group.

First, this. If you never take the time to read over and vote for any other JIRA issue, please look over this one.

If you do nothing else but scan through the responses, then look at the names of people responding, wanting this to be fixed. These are major builders on the grid, some of them people working with the very clients the Labs are apparently wishing to placate with the current move of adult content providers to Ursula--and this needs to be changed.

Why? Why does it matter to most of us, who do our best to build lightly, to utilize all resources to lower our prim counts, because we do not have the space or the allowances to go over one thousand prims? I mean, think about it--one thousand prims. That's huge, isn't it? Who needs that many prims?

Well, I'll tell you. Much of Caledon has higher-than-limited builds. Many college campuses on the grid have higher-than-limited builds. Professional sims, design/technical sims, people making accurate (if non-driveable) replicas of existing submarines, ironclad vessels, tall ships, spaceships--all of these can easily go over the imposed limit. Anyone who has to now contemplate moving everything they have on the mainland--much of which is landscaping, architecture, and furniture, having little to do with purely adult content--they can now not take higher-than-limited builds back into their inventories, in order to move to Ursula.

This is salt on the wound. This is acid on the burn. This is ridiculous, and Miss Murakami makes the most compelling point in the entire conversation--that she is telling her upcoming major university clients not to proceed with their plans to establish campus space and working structures in Second Life, because she cannot now guarantee that she will have a working backup of their commissioned build--commissions, I might add, which are paid to her in actual currency values, not Lindens--in case anything goes wrong.

So, let's see, quick ballpark of figures:

A full island gives one working space of 65,536 square meters. For just about everyone, that costs US$1000.00 to establish that region, with a monthly tier fee of US$295.00. So for the first year of holding that sim, it costs just under five thousand dollars--US$4835.00 to be exact. (To maintain that sim, of course, it will cost US$3835.00 each and every year of operation.)

Under corporate/educational sims, for the first year of holding the sim under those reduced fees, it will cost US$700.00 to establish the region, and a monthly tier fee of US$147.50--for a first-year total of US$2770.00. (And maintenance for that level of sim would cost US$1770.00 each and every year thereafter.)

Is it sinking in for anyone how much money that is? That the Labs--with this newly established, idiotic policy--is pretty much guaranteeing they'll lose?

Why in the hell are they playing these games? Everyone must move but oh no wait you can't pick up your builds but we're doing this for the educators but oh no wait they don't want to play now.

This is Linden Labs shooting themselves in the foot, then shooting themselves in the foot again to check out how much damage there was from the first shot! Why? WHY was this considered to be a needed change??

A much-needed bunny break:

Photobucket

Teh cuteness! I am dying of teh cuteness!

They also have tinier bunnies--ones that will perch on a finger! It's so very very twee.

Scribble is one of those interesting stores: she has a simple line of attractive modern clothing, but where she is starting to really shine is in the realm of sculpts and scripting. Her bunnies, her small dolls, her sculpted jackets, her scripted bubble-blowing pipes--they're all charming and precious things. She deserves more support than she gets, honestly, but she's slowly building up a quirky little fan base.

Lastly, a quote, before I go off to the nine billion other things I must do:

"Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. Water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend."

Bruce Lee said that, and it's as true now as when he said it. Have a marvelous day, and don't forget to vote on that JIRA!

07 March, 2009

and I need your love the most when I least deserve it

So many in my life promise impossibility. They know it, I know it, but I accept it every time. And it slices deeper every time it happens--"I hope I never let you down" from one; "I will always love you" from another; "I will never leave you" from a third. On and on it goes, ringing through changes and variations, where the core of the offering is always We cannot be parted.

And it's not just rejection and revolution, anger and deceit, regrets and lost causes; sometimes, the shock is in the severance. One day there, in my heart or in my arms; the next day gone by flood or lost to ammunition, keen and cutting, or overwhelmed by their own personal losses as they watch their life spiral crimson over bone.

And I admit, I have been waiting, breath perhaps only in secret held, for the words to be said: "You are my only love" or "I will always be there" or any similar variation.

Tonight, the analyzing machine that comprises part of me turned in the initial report of many months of observation: that none of my current loves have ever said this. That most of them, when asked, admit the possibility of leavetaking. That there is acknowledgment that things happen, in a life, that circumstances change, that we could drift in differing directions...in short, that life may happen in our lives, and even parting must be provided for in its own time.

The closest any have ever come to ringing through those particular changes? "I don't intend ever to give you up, if I can help it." Which admits to strong intention, but also subtly acknowledges (at least, to my thinking) that intention may not match action.

There is a curious purity, a moment of crystalline comprehension, when the wall of the glass heart is tapped just enough to shimmer the air with that piercing, ringing tone of understanding. I can accept this, I think to myself, deep in the shrouded shadowed places where I think. I can believe this. This much is true.

There may well be partings to come, of one or two or all, but that will be dealt with in time. The small somber sliver of spirit, soberly standing guard (hah) can relax, at last, and accept this with such grace as we know how to express. This, also is new ground; new and uneasy territory for me, for I am profoundly unused to standing and unsuspecting in any way.

But I will learn. This, also, I will learn: how to simply love, and know that love returned, and not fear dissolution.

A toast, then, to personal growth. And perhaps, just perhaps, a wee dram of the good stuph kept reserved for growing up. It has taken me far beyond far too long for this.

21 February, 2008

and you smoked with the ghost in the back of my head

when I'm done with thinking, then I'm done with you.
when I'm done with crying, then I'm done with you.
when I feel so tired, then I'm done with you.
everybody feels this way sometimes, everybody feels this way--

The night's dark, and it's cold. I stand on the streetcorner and I look up and watch the moon go dark. I remember nights where this bothered me. I remember nights where I rejoiced. I remember nights where I never gave a thought to it, I was busy with other things.

It happens so often. Anyone can get distracted. Not notice. Be occupied with something else in the life. It's life, after all. So much goes on in a life.

and I do.
you can't hear it, but I do
you can't hear it, but I do

The night's dark, and it glitters. The lights dance around me, red, hot orange, bright green, glowing blue. We dance, through the colored lights, moving to the beat which compels us to move faster, moving until sweat runs from our limbs like rain and the drums command every heart to beat in pattern. We are together in this, the flame crackle is what all our ears hear, the night song moves us all as the drums beat and the dancers step to the pattern we all know.

The dance is life. The dance is survival. The dance is the choice to live again.

you're trying to convince me that what I've done's not right.
I get so frustrated, I stay up every night.
you ask me for an answer, and I'm so tired and I'm up in the air,
I'm up in the air
you know, everybody feels this way sometimes, everybody feels this way--

Light and shadow, dark and bright, we are all these things. I say I live in the shadows, out of the light, and that's largely true. That doesn't mean where I live is wrong. That doesn't mean where I live is evil. That doesn't mean I spread out from the heart of it, corrupt and indistinct, pretense of love gone viral, pretty mask hiding damnation.

No one's damned, unless they want to be. There's always a choice.

and I do.
you can't hear it, but I do.
you can't hear it, but I'm feeling this way
just because you say:

And yes, sometimes that choice hurts. Life hurts. Sometimes life deals us greater hurt than any single entity could ever do; and it takes time to come back from that pain, more time to reach the point where inhaling doesn't feel like drowning, where movement isn't agony.

But it can be done. Day by day. Hour by hour, if need be. And we, we social creatures we, we living members of the same consciousness, we cannot do it alone. We die if we try.

Though that, that is our choice, too.

I will be ignored.
I will be denied.
I could be erased.
I could be brushed aside.
I will get scared, and I will get shoved down,
but I feel like I do because you push me around--

And I go to Morgaine to remember how to breathe. I go to Rivula to remember how to smile. I go to Penzance to remember decisive action. I go to my loves to remember how to heal.

And everywhere, everywhere I go, I carry with me what I know, what I don't know, what I'm learning, what I've forgotten. And I've left the train wreck behind.

I'm starting to ignore you, I've doubted you so long.
I'm tired of over-thinking, I know you don't belong.
now I'm asking questions--no one pushes me around.
everybody feels this way sometimes, everybody feels this way--

I know it's there, it won't leave. It's too much a part of me. I know it will roll down the tracks again, at some point, if for no other reason than it's the largest symbol I have in my arsenal symbol-set, all those ideas and concepts and broken dreams.

But it's not rolling now. It's not moving. I'm moving. And I'm moving forward.

You may not see it, but I am. You may not understand it, but I am. You may not approve, but I am.

And you're only left behind if you want to be. You can choose to travel and learn--with me, or learn by yourself, or learn from others on the same path. Or you can stay and nurse your hurts where the hurts started.

It's your choice. It was my choice, too.

And I chose to listen to pain for far too long. Now I listen to the world.

and I do.
you can't hear it, but I do.
you don't seem angry, but I do.
I do.

I'm so sick of speaking words no one understands

You're too important for anyone
You play the role of all you long to be
But I, I know who you really are
You're the one who cries when you're alone

I spin deeper into the dark, limbo welcomed this time, as it hasn't been others. It had to be a great pain to tear me from the world, and so it was, a deep pain, the beginning, perhaps, of a great grieving.

But where will you go
With no one left to save you from yourself
You can't escape
You can't escape

I was offered the world, I was offered entry, I had stood, earlier, stood with one hand upon the portal and the other curled around the book I'd found, old-new tales of the Unseelie, to instruct me again in their ways, our ways, our habits and abilities. I had said no. I had refused the world.

You think that I can't see right through your eyes
Scared to death to face reality
No one seems to hear your hidden cries
You're left to face yourself alone

It had to be a great pain, and so it was, to tear me from the world I love. Decisions have to be made, and they will be made, this night. I will know my path before I enter the world again. And if that takes longer than this one night, then I will be in limbo, longer.

But where will you go (where will you go)
With no one left to save you from yourself
You can't escape
The truth
I realize you're afraid (I realize)
But you can't abandon everyone
You can't escape
You don't want to escape

When I know, I come back in. I turn from the point of light, the portal to the world, and spin deeper into the dark. I curl around the book, odd source of security, but it is here and I am alone, and perhaps that is meant to be, too.

I'm so sick of speaking words that no one understands
Is it clear enough that you can't live your whole life all alone?
I can hear you when you whisper
But you can't even hear me screaming

Mine to choose the weapons, yes. Mine as challenged. I have only myself to blame if my challenger is honorless and refuses to play by the rules. But my responsibility because, as usual, I have dared to be open with my plans, with my heart, with my words.

I do not, I cannot, close my heart. It hurts, it bleeds, but I have fought too hard to open it, so that those I love can see me. I have fought too hard, lost too much, to go back on that.

Where will you go (where will you go)
With no one left to save you from yourself
You can't escape
The truth
I realize you're afraid (I realize)

But I will take this back. No more words of war and battle, no more implications and insinuations. My plans will be my own. My words will be my own, at least until this war is ended. One way or another.

But you can't reject the whole world
You can't escape
You won't escape
You can't escape
You don't want to escape

But I will say this, before I turn from all speaking. I will have this known: if any I love are hurt by this, if any I love cease to breathe in the world beyond, because I am distracted with this petty little war...I will wind up that death and affix it in the ways I know and lay it, broken and injurious, at my challenger's door. For it will be our fault, together, if it happens, and we both should eat the fruit of it.

I curl around the book and know pain from the sharp corners. Let me feel pain. Let me feel pain if I cannot feel joy, tumbling through the dark. Let me remember what it feels like, to hurt. For I'll need to know before I face my challenger again.

back from a far horizon

Sometimes, when things shift, it's hard effort--straining against another language, and suddenly losing to it, and rising from where one was thrown, touching everything, and hearing another name for it. Wrestling with ideas, trying to force them into pattern, and suddenly having the pattern become clear.

Sometimes the shift is paradigm.

I count the hours
you count the days together
we count the minutes in this passion play
walk dusty miles
and I ride that train
on a first class ticket
just to be with you again

Thrown up on the far shore, and the train moved against all expectation for the broken thing it had become. It moved slowly, to be sure, chugging nearly painfully into the mountains, laboring into the heights.

It's not going to be easy, I think, and I'm not wrong. I could get out and walk faster. But we keep going, it's important, essential, vital in some sense, this current psychopomp.

picking up tired feet
back from a far horizon
cleaned up and brushed down
dressed to look the part
fresh from God's garden
I bring a gift of roses
to stand in sweet spring water
and press them to your heart

I cling to the struts, fighting for reason, fighting against sleep, fighting until we find a good resting spot, and begin trying to slow the train down from "ridiculously slow" to "barely moving" once I see the sketch against the mountains that might be, just might be, a refueling station.

We crest the curve of the hill like cresting along the wave, and I'm hoping for a slow descent to shore, rather than crash. Never know with trains, but we're slowing, we're slowing, we're coming to a stop...in time.

like the Kipling cat
I walk alone
never inviting trouble
never casting the stone
but this badge of honour
is of tarnished tin
light your guiding beacon
to bring this fisher in

Endless pained hours later, it turns out I was right. Small little town, looking abandoned, but there's the refueling station, and I see water and coal, and anything else, I can work around. Empty, but it doesn't bother me, I've been alone before.

There's always a work-around.

picking up tired feet
back from a far horizon
cleaned up and brushed down
and dressed to look the part
fresh from God's garden
I bring a gift of roses
to stand in sweet spring water
and press them to your heart

More hours to live through, endure, accept, crawling the town for repair metals, hissing at the touch of bare iron on my skin. Wood and copper, ivory plates under the counter of the tea house, wire and leather straps from the stables, corset lacing from the mercantile.

It'll be patchwork, but ironically, that's appropriate. I set to work.

I count the hours
you count the days together
we count the minutes in this passion play
walk dusty miles
and I ride that train
on a first class ticket
just to be with you again...

The day's set, the moon's out, new day explodes into bright light again, before I'm close to done. Wiping sweat off my forehead with the sleeve over one arm, it's hard work. Grueling in spots, and some spots are going to be open for a while yet, simply because I couldn't find enough pieces. And the structure's weaker for it, but maybe that's all right, too.

I don't have to be strong for everything. Train still rolls. We're good. We can rest the day and pick up travel tomorrow.

I put the hammer down on the sheet of copper I was curving around a strut. I'll get it later. Now, it's time to find a bed, and I think the old hotel will do me fine.

SONNET 116

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Caution and revelation both. Absolution granted, responsibility given. We'll get through this.

I track down an old quilt in a hope chest, dragging it over me on the least bedsprung bed in the place, wrapping around myself the smell of old cotton and cedar. I lay my head on the goosedown pillow, breathing becoming slow and deep in the late afternoon sun.

I may dream. I may not. But the nightmares are gone. For now, I'm very thankful, and not thinking beyond that for now. Time enough to work out the details later.

Always time. With faith and trust. Always time...

(Lyrics are "A Gift of Roses" from Jethro Tull. And of course, the sonnet...is Shakespeare.)

what I learned I rejected but I believe again

I know it's hard to tell how mixed up you feel
Hoping what you need is behind every door
Each time you get hurt, I don't want you to change
Because everyone has hopes, you're human after all

There are moments we experience, moments that are set aside from the rest of our lives, defining moments. They vary in intensity--the birth of a child; the death of a friend; lovers leaving, learning new languages...signposts of a life. Moments we can point to--here, I was here, when it happened--

Whatever it was.

The feeling sometimes, wishing you were someone else
Feeling as though you never belong
This feeling is not sadness, this feeling is not joy
I truly understand, Please, don't cry now

Signposts of a life. Moments of definition. Moments we look back on later, and say here, here is where I saw the change. Here is where I noticed. Here is where I had to act.

Protests. Songs. Celebrations. Vigils. Hoping to hear good news, waiting for bad news. Raising voices in anger. Trying to understand.

Here. Here I was. Here I was when it first happened. Right here. This moment.

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you

The one I was a year ago, even one year ago, would have watched me in this moment, watched what I did, understand to my ability to understand, when I lost everything I loved again. Because I knew that pattern. I knew what would happen. It had happened before.

Signposts. Moments in a life. Moments of confusion. Moments of understanding.

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you

The woman I am now, could not do that. I could not stand by. I couldn't watch love die again. And I'd never fought for any love before, I never thought I had the right, I never thought I could.

All of my life. All of my signposts. Everyone I've loved.

But not this time. Not this time.

Being like you are
Well this is something else, who would comprehend?
But some that do, lay claim that
Divine purpose blesses them
That's not what I believe, and it doesn't matter anyway

Sometimes, the hardest thing is not suffering pain. Pain can be endured, pain can be accepted, pain can become familiar, after a while, known, quantified and categorized. Sometimes, the hardest thing is speaking about that pain. Sometimes, the hardest thing...ever...is simply...being honest.

This hurts. This hurts more than I want it to. And reaching out--to friends, to lovers, to the ones closest to the heart. How can we fix this?

Asking for help. It's something I have been, am, will be...very, very bad at doing.

Signposts. Moments of change. This was mine. Knowing I had to reach out. Knowing I had to speak of my pain. Knowing it would cost me--and cost me high--but...knowing the alternative was worse.

A part of your soul ties you to the next world
Or maybe to the last, but I'm still not sure
But what I do know, is to us the world is different
As we are to the world but, I guess you would know that

Fragments of the nightmare stay with me. Most of it's left. I'm blissfully grateful that I don't have every element perfectly concretized, because I'm having that one nightmare over, and over, and over again.

I just had the one. The one moment of heart-fluttering panic, and...then talking. Talking and talking and talking. Reinterpreting and explaining and nature of language and definitions.

--wandering around with a parboiled daisy dripping with spring water, through emerald grasses, knowing my friends were dying out of sight. Being walked back into the house past the corpse of a love, slowly being parted out on the butcher-block kitchen table. Led to a chair, curiously dispassionate, while they sat me down and took the flower and replaced it with knitting needles through my eyes--

And the thing is? That wasn't the part where I started really wishing I could stop dreaming.

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion trying to change you

Defining language. This is what it means when I say this. This is what I say when I feel this. This is what I say when I'm hiding. This is how I hide from you. Giving away my secrets, my heart's long-held defenses, giving entry points away. No way to change the locks and go on now.

This is me. And what you've done has hurt me. Just saying it, just saying that, instead of claiming all pain was my fault, and hoarding the rest. Just...speaking. Openly. Honestly.

Learning. Learning to speak. Learning to share. Learning to understand.

Learning to fight.

This moment. Right here. This signpost. Here, we begin to change. Here we change again.

Right here.

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, oh please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate for all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion always trying to change you

They say the ultimate sacrifice is to die for love. They're wrong. The ultimate sacrifice is to live for it.

Now I can. Let's find the next signpost.

look at your life, who do you want to be before you die?

((Suppose I have to toss this one in under RP...))

Do you know who you want to be?
Do you choose who to believe?
Do you hope that one day you can leave?
Welcome to your life.

Sooner or later, in every relationship, we hit Shapeshifter 101. Sometimes it's just curiosity; sometimes, it's because I've lived through something that would kill another female. And then we talk, and go over what it is, what they can expect...what I can take.

Hearts break but they can mend.
The thing that matters is that you've got friends.
They'll be with you till the end.
Welcome to your life.

There's a lot of different shifter strains on the grid. Some hold to two, three main forms. Some have more. I knew a man once in Steelhead who had more than two hundred different forms, his essential nature being fluid.

All the things you wished he said.
All the times you wished you were dead.
All the tears that you shed.
Welcome to your life.

I'm not a fluid being, I'm a solid one. The rules for me depend on that solidity. But the form around that solid core is changeable.

Growing up but refuse to get old.
Don't look back, watch the future unfold.
Keep a grasp on the knife that you hold.
Welcome to your life.

I say seven-skin shapeshifter, even though I have more forms, both because it's nicely alliterative, and because it's descriptive. Mammal. Fish. Bird. Plant. Insect. Mineral. Ophidian. Fur and fins, feathers and scales, leaves and chitin and smoke--I have them, I know them.

No direction, no intention, no care in the world.
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
But you keep trying. No thoughts of dying.

And, save for some very odd forms--the Jellos come to mind, the smoke form, things at the far edge of experience--the rules are the same.

You gotta open your eyes.
Don't let this day pass you by.
Give thanks to be alive.

Sometimes you make mistakes.
That's the risk you take.
The choices that we make.

The single most important tip is, whatever face a shifter wears, it's still them inside. Instincts may differ, abilities, definitely appearance, but the core of us, it's still us. People who only wear one face sometimes forget that, and it's not as if we don't help them to. My nekos, they're vastly different from my human faces, vastly different from my elementals. But they're all still me.

Make it worth it.
The smiles, the frowns, the ups and the downs.
When you're trapped in a corner with no one around.

I can take a lot of damage. Any shifter can. The trick to remember is that shifting to heal more than once? Takes a lot out of us.

The other trick is, generally, when I shift? I absorb whatever I'm in back into me, and that also includes what's in me. To date, I haven't gotten pregnant. I may not be able to. It's just something I accept.

Demonic attacks, even demonic love-bites, at times, they generally last on shifter flesh. I've shifted several times and still bore wounds from certain encounters.

Life's a seige. Victories.
The regrets. All the people that you've met.
All those times you wish to forget.

I'm not immortal. I can be hurt, I can be killed. But in general, I can heal from everything, given time, space alone if necessary, definitely space away from the damaging influence.

Life's a risk.
The hopes, the fears, the laughs, the tears.
The way your beliefs change through the years.

For me, shifting is largely dependent on mood. While I can and have changed out of instinct, out of unconscious desire, generally it's driven by emotions. My zombie forms arose out of pain, my new liger out of the desire to protect and be protected. My rock arrived because I so desperately wanted to be invisible, that week. My butterflies came from joy.

Life's a risk.
Your love, your hate.
The bonds we create.
No way to predict your fate.

I'm not a fighter. I'm not a mage. All my magic is in my hands, in my heart. But so far it's been enough.

Life's a risk.
Realize in life nothing is certain except the end...

Your biggest tip for dealing with any shapeshifter...accept us. Have preferences, if you wish them, and we'll by and large try to honor them. We'll try to hold to one face, if our loves prefer that face. But we much prefer the shifting state, the nature changed.

Welcome to my life. It changes like I do.

(Lyrics are Welcome To Your Life's self-titled song, "Welcome To Your Life".)

01 November, 2007

and I hate when things are over, when so much is left undone

And now, for me, the new year begins, and we are in the turbulence of change.

This year I'm listening. I'm giving myself up, letting change take me where it wills me to go.

You might have noticed some slight formatting changes. Background here, might change too. That's not yet been decided...

But the big thing is, I have decided I have a new goal--20,000 items of inventory. Or less.

By the end of November.

I'll let you know how it goes.

The life will be reconstructed. I will not wallow in pain and nostalgia, not as I have. I will go forward and I will endure. And I will change.

Welcome to the dark half of the year.

19 July, 2007

is there anything alive now, this darkness is what I hear (part I)

((RP MODE))

It started with the girl.

I can't start there, really, I should tell more of the tale, but...for me, it started with the girl. Everything before was just...what happened before, the days in the life, turning into months, and years, and decades...

You see, when I left Lumindor, my heart was broken. The lands I loved had changed; the rulers I'd tacitly obeyed had turned their back on anyone not mortal within their purview. It felt...hopeless, and endless, and...lost.

My Queen knew I was unwell, and took me to a lovely island. It truly was, a stunning place--flower-bedecked pathways, an underwater grotto for swimming, a quaint and ancient graveyard, a dark brooding cathedral. She pointed out the elegant details, room after room of fine attire, and bid me stay and heal.

What I did not realize was when she left...I couldn't. And I couldn't for many, many years.

At first I raged against it...I mean, really, how dare she, ruler or not, take all my choice away? I was not her servant, I was her courtier, her phouka, on occasion her chosen emissary, consort to the Captain of her Raven Guard...

...the rage lasted a good ten years. And I was still stuck.

I swam in the grotto, experimenting with various forms; I explored the shoreline, the cathedral, the graveyard. I discovered secret passages and sunken gazebos and dark towers and meditation spaces. I tried on all the clothes.

That took another ten years.

After that, I started thinking. Why had things gone so bad in Lumindor? Oh, I knew the base of it--political upset, human-first thinking, a score of backbiting back and forth, a traitor in the high court--sure, that much was obvious. But my end of it, you see...I wondered if I had made life harder for my Court, and my Queen...had I made life harder for those who cared for me, like my half-Drow love, like others I cared for? How did my behavior affect them?

That took twenty years, twenty long years, thinking every day, trying to learn, testing out my behavior, going a little mad from hunger, from personal pain, from doubt, from confusion...day after day after day of had I been wrong?

The last ten years I spent on the island were easy, by comparison. Thin as a wraith, eyes haunted, focusing on a set few shapes instead of the multiplicitous profusion I'd favored before, but soul...if one counts the Sidhe as having souls...mostly at peace. I'd forced the fledgling within to reach an accord, and we mostly operated in concert; Lilit and I as a unit, not two fighting spirits trapped in the same flesh.

And fifty years to the day that my Queen had conveyed me to the lovely little aisle...the spell lifted and I was free. I took a ship I'd built in my spare time and ferried it to the nearest section of mainland I could find, and set out to discover how life had changed for all those I'd left behind.

The second surprise was waiting. Only a few months had passed in the world, while I'd been locked far away, wrestling with my ethics and my inner demon. Startling, the realization; somehow worse, to note that few noticed my absence. Fifty years of my days, fifty long, eternal nights; every face I saw still remembered mine, who'd known it before.

And Lumindor still tottered on, though in my absence, Valruna had flourished, the lands now belonging to my former employer, and once adviser to Lumindor's King. She'd extended me--all of the Unseelie Court--an invitation to her realm, but I hadn't taken it...though I did begin to think about it.

I heard from the Captain, his mental voice febrile and unnerving. I heard from a gentle soul I'd nearly forgotten, possessor now of a demon of long-ago acquaintance; he also bid me come to Valruna. I heard from a monk I thought had long forgotten me, urging me to come to the land.

What could I do, so many voices tugging at me? I went. And I wandered, and looked my fill, and....it was so very like my lost Lumindor, the wilds I'd treasured so fiercely...I was not guardian of these lands, but they accepted me, and I walked where I willed, learning, exploring...watching.

I found the camp of the gypsies, and it felt like home. It felt more like home than the Court did, nearly more like home than my lost tree next to the little pond in the wilds. I spent many days there, talking with Rom I'd known and those I didn't, learning about the land, its rulers, the factions, the people.

One night, I told myself, I would wander corner to corner, shoreline to swell of hill, and see what could be seen. I'd climbed for an hour up the very steep side of a mountain sharp as dragons' teeth, when I slipped, half-sliding, half-falling, down the incline to the tower keep below. I quickly hid, hissing over scraps on my arms and legs that already beaded with blood, when I saw a dark figure, and a bright one, move within the structure.

The dark one swirled with an energy alien to my perceptions, but also one I'd known before--the third incubus I'd ever met, he'd felt like that, he'd nearly...looked like that, and I watched him, confused. But if he with his black skin and tendrilled wings was a sight to see, the woman stalking past my position was enough to make him look plain in comparison.

It wasn't that she was pretty; of course she was. Of course she was a vision; pale skin, cloud of pale hair, a red dress cut close to every curve she had. But more than that, she glowed; and by that, I mean she radiated her own scarlet light, throwing rose shadows on the walls of the keep, glittering from her skin, the strands of her hair, her dress.

She stalked past me, and I could barely breathe, watching her, and they both left for the village, and I...I followed. I followed as they went to the castle of the Queen, and I snuck as close as I could to where they stood, to listen. I was so intent on what they said, it was only the sound of swords leaving scabbards that drew my attention away.

And it was a lovely bit of confusion, explaining my actions to four suspicious wood elves, and then all over again to the Queen above, as the argument had attracted her attention...but all was sorted, and off everyone went. And I thought that was the end of it, until two days ago, when I saw the radiant one again.

So...as I said, it started with the girl...

for people like us, in places like this, we need all the hope that we can get

And when the world dissolved around us, all I had left to comfort me in limbo was the memory of his touch. But tonight, this long night, this very early morning...it was enough.

When did it become time for my searchlight soul to stop looking? When did I turn around and say, I have enough, I am satisfied, this is all I need? When did one person have the power to convince me both that I am replete, and also, of how deeply I felt for others in the life?

I have counted down the grid with others, a double handful of times before. Some days with dear friends, greeting the oncoming silence with silliness and jests. Some days with lovers, holding each other close while we watched the light fade. Once, once memorably, with an utter bastard who will never be forgiven for what he did in the last moment of breath and light.

This moment, this late night, this very early morning, felt like it was all the time we had to say what we truly felt. And for the first time--though I've said it lightly before--I stated my heart with meaning, and knew my love returned, and spun off into limbo with a lightness of spirit I've rarely known.

It will be a scant few hours in one sense, it will be an eternity in another, before I see him again. And on Thursday, if there is time, time must be found to sit under the darkened moon and divine our future. And today, if there is time, I must find a way to reach out to the neko and make sure he's well.

But in between, before and after, and all the moments that can be spared...I will be happy to be at his side. When he's free, when I am, when he's not otherwise occupied, when I am not...when we are not both relentlessly busy...For I know I love him, and that love colors my life now, and all my decisions.

He is my brightest thing, and he shines a light on how much I love the others I care for, and it takes my breath that he can be both joy and revelation to me.

I am humbly grateful for each moment I spend with him. I am beyond amazed how I was given the care of such radiance. I am surfeit with soaring delight that he understands my life is also spent with the wandering moon, the neko, my own friends. I am happy and charmed to spend time with those he cares for.

Today, my limbo is not featureless and grey. Today, my personal vacuum is lit with memories of him, strung with his words to me, touched by his presence. I watch the sweep of his sable hair in memory, just as I still watch the swirl of cloud-colored silk, or watch spiky-brushed blue, turn and turn, eternally turn. Bearing smiles to see me, and in truth, I should thank each and every one of them, that they find me worth spending time with.

Today...my limbo is not limbo. Today, I have enough.

"Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away. When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares." (Henri Nouwen)

let me smother every aspect of your soul

Some friends you have, he tells me. Standing in the way of injured love screaming for repair...I tell him, they seek to protect me. They saw me hurt, they saw him as the cause of it, they added two plus two and did not get five.

Then he must go back to waiting, he tells me. And hoping against hope the paradigm will shift. And I have no words to answer him.
