I try to breathe, I realize I'm paralyzed

Day 91 of the Eternal Headache dawned with a profound disinclination to do all the things. But I have horns to show off, and I want to do that, so...I crawled into a cardigan set and went looking for a good setting. Today, that setting was Glencoe, more random than usual, than any particular grand desire to be there? Though their intro upon arrival said this:
Hello Emilly Shatner-Orr!
Welcome To Anghysbel!
The legends say that when the Wilderlords first came north they sent explorers out even as far north, beyond the Alkali wastes to beyond the perpetually frozen mountains in the far north. Eventually a monk returned with stories about the hidden Vale way to the North that is warmed by the earth and contains a pristine lake, many unique plants and animals and even tribes of Alon.
That's a lot of north. Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Anyway...

Arkivet's Crystalline horns, red shading to pink.

I wandered for a bit, sat down in a circle of stones, and apparently folded my torso, so this is where the picture-taking will occur! These are Arkivet's "Crystalline" horns, unadjusted--I normally do muck about with positioning for most horns, but today...today I was doing pretty good sitting upright, so I didn't want to push things.

Arkivet's Crystalline horns, in sunset reds.

The first shot was a red shading to a soft rose-pink tone, very pretty, and this one reminds me of vivid sunset tones.

Arkivet's Crystalline horns, in super-saturated pink.

And I have learned--if anyone wants to do a full-saturation pink look, Arkivet and Vae Victis both generally have that in their palettes, because one of their customer service reps adores that particular shade.

Arkivet's Crystalline horns palette HUD.

This is that HUD palette, by the way--a full twenty different options, including one Torley-watermelon which amused my brain.

Arkivet's Crystalline horns, in the watermelon shade.

Yes, of course I had to show that one off.

No, I don't know why I shot the picture like this.

Arkivet's Crystalline horns, in icy blues.

There's a lot of variation here, and that's without the given mod options. I love this wintery option, too--as if they've grown out of ice shards instead of crystal protrusions.

Just go to Arkivet's main store if you want a set of your own; they're going for L$300 right now!

so, where is the Duke, anyway? (part CXXXI)

(Roleplay entry. Continued from part CXXX.)

Hiro-in-Hollywood1

The neon sign on the top of the Roosevelt Hotel across the street lit up the darkened room. Hiro sat quietly listening to the traffic below on Hollywood Boulevard. The double-hung windows opened to allow some relief from the oppressive Los Angeles summer night, the hum of the ceiling fan on full speed.

On the desk a mahogany box--that looked a little like a radio--spoke. "The airframe of the shuttle is hidden in the lake. The superstructure is out past Mojave."

Hiro poured some of the whiskey in the lone bottle into his glass. His second one. Neat.

"Are you sure this is the focal point?"

"75% probability according to our models. Mickey Cohen will buy the Codex or attempt to take it. In several time lines he sells it to Parsons and/or JPL."

"And the FBI?"

"In every timeline, Hoover is obsessed with stopping 'Commies' and breaking up sex cults."

"And he thinks our friend Jack is both. Who has the Codex now?"

"A second-tier smuggler down in San Pedro. Locals call him the Turk. Seems to have picked up the Codex from some other contraband in the port. There is a doctor in Hancock Park to whom he sold the book. But he hasn't delivered it."

There was a pause. "The Turk is seeing a woman, who knows a little about the Codex. And, well...you need to know her name, Hiro. She is a complication."

"Oh?"

Hiro-in-Hollywood2

"Her name is Elizabeth Short."

Hiro sipped his whiskey. A siren sounded from the boulevard below.

"Seems vaguely familiar, how is she a complication?"

"She is the Black Dahlia victim."

Hiro finished his whiskey. He had shapeshifted into a human form a few hours before. The sweat on his neck glistened. He stood up and reached for his white cotton shirt on the back of the chair. He stopped and paused. His muscular back tensed, in a sweat-soaked tank-top undershirt.

Hiro-in-Hollywood3

"You have to be [f**king] kidding me. Of all the broads in Hollywood, she's close to the Codex?"

"In all timelines," said the GSU William Gibson AI.

Hiro sighed. "How much time do we have?"

"Three days. Hiro..." The ship's mind said patiently, "Hiro, you can't get into this fight. As tempting as it is. All this drama, bad characters who need to be vanquished, innocents saved...you can't do this. You need to get the copy of the Codex and get back to Gearhaven."

Hiro-in-Hollywood4

"But is her...is her situation related to the Codex?"

"Likely, but not sure...we need to start systemically. We need to figure out what the principals really know."

Hiro finished fastening his cuff links and adjusted his suspenders. "Okay, you're coming with me. Need to put you in the big briefcase."

"Really, I am okay here..."

"No, I need your help in real time."

Hiro-in-Hollywood5

The AI sighed. "Okay, my advice is, we start downtown. The doctor drinks at the Jonathan Club on Thursdays, and plays cards before heading out for other activities."

"J-Club huh? High-end place, right?"

"Highest end, I have forged a letter of introduction from the Seville Club in London as a reciprocal connection to get you inside."

"Think that will work?"

There was a pause. "I do doubt it Hiro; as we have seen in Caledon and elsewhere, you are...as they say...'unclubbable'..."

Hiro thought about tossing the AI into the street and having nothing to do with this storyline. But he knew he would be stranded in this reality bubble if he did.

"Okay, let’s go see this doctor."

Hiro closed the large leather briefcase after placing the ship's mind into it. "Try to be quiet in there..."

"Try not to kill anyone too quickly, sir..."

"Let me run the ops, you do the homework, buddy."

21 November, 2020

when you build your house, I'll come by (part IV)

Last of the shots. (Continued from part III.)

cal-airship19
(Either still in Kitti, or just edging into Tangle.)
[22:44] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr) bats leaves aside
cal-airship20
(Above the tall trees.)
[22:45] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): this has enough
[22:45] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Tangle?
[22:45] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): this parcel
To be fair, we are still pondering either moving from Caledon II, to Stormhold, or Tanglewood, or expanding holdings in Caledon II. We haven't decided yet.

cal-airship21
(Fully in Tanglewood.)
[22:45] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): was mine then mags
cal-airship22
(Close shot of the Aer Viator.)
[22:46] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): steam was here
cal-airship23
(Sinking through the trees.)
[22:46] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): We'd have 750 to decorate, but the thing with Steam is, it needs very very little
Steamopolis is a gargantual build, true, so much going on in that thing, so many floors and back stairways and rooms next to other rooms...but the thing is, barring the occasional need for the odd bed, or couch set, a person could, if inclined, pop up Steamopolis and live there as is. There's a limited staff, furnishings, art, curtains, a power plant for the steam towers...it really has everything as it is.

cal-airship24
(And coming to a halt on once and former Shatner lands. Future lands? Remains to be seen.)

And that's where we stopped. Takes a little doing, with the gaps, but we proved that with care, and occasional reduction in speed, at least with the lower-prim airships, Caledon can still be flown mostly end to end. We'll see if that changes in future. I hope it doesn't.

19 November, 2020

when you build your house, I'll come by (part III)

cal-airship13
(Facing the open sea.)
[22:37] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Well, it goes up from here, Mayfair-Pensans, and up from Speirling, Stormhold
[22:37] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr) looks for Tanglewood
[22:37] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): So....Speirling to Stormhold, take a left, Tanglewood
[22:38] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Or, Mayfair to Pensans and THEN take the left
cal-airship14
(Facing the open sea.)
[22:39] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): look
[22:39] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): where we met
[22:39] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr) smiles at the RoboKitteh
[22:39] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): It is, yes
cal-airship15
(Stormhold? Pensans? I think Stormhold.)

Indeed. Even better, when I finally got the drive out of the sorry potato computer, I found an entire folder of shots I'd snapped on the fly from that event. Even though I could not place names to faces at this point, they'll be going up on my Flickr, or going up as entries here.

cal-airship16
(Flying through Mayfair, Speirling on the left.)
[22:40] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Stormhold
[22:41] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): stormhold look vacant too
[22:41] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Many parcels are
[22:41] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): this isnt good for des
[22:41] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): No
[22:42] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): And close to Tangle, you can tell because all the trees got taller :D
cal-airship17
(Homing in on Kittiwickshire?)
[22:42] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Next up: Kittiwickshire
[22:43] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): And Kitti proper
cal-airship18
(More of Kittiwickshire.)

And the grand tall trees of Tanglewood ahead.

(Continued in part IV.)

17 November, 2020

when you build your house, I'll come by (part II)

cal-airship7
(And into the Moors!)
[22:32] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Time shift again :D
[22:33] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): And coming up on the Moors
[22:33] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Could be a prim issue
[22:33] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Someone with absolutely maxed-out everything on their parcel
I don't believe I kept the bit of chat where he mentioned it, but he had earlier tried to fly over the Moors in another ship and had the ship return mid-flight.

cal-airship8
(Banking in the fog.)
[22:34] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Fog rolls in, but we've made the crossing!
[22:34] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Next up, Vic City
[22:35] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Time shift, and across the border!
cal-airship9
(Near Caledon Dream?)
[22:35] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): The island-ish bit is Caledon Dream
[22:35] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): I know nothing about it
[22:35] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Other than that it apparently has its own moon....
And that I believe Duchess Magz owns it...

cal-airship10
(The moon in question.)
[22:36] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): If we continue forward, we'll be in Mayfair
[22:36] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): then speirling
[22:36] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Yes
cal-airship11
(I believe that's Speirling to the mid-left on this image?)
[22:36] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): and stormhold right?
[22:36] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Which I believe is no longer East and West Speirling, just Speirling
[22:37] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): let's try to get to tangle wood..
cal-airship12
(Possibly approaching Tangle, and what IS the floating Moroccan lantern skybox to the far left?)

And now moving towards Mayfair.

(Continued in part III.)

15 November, 2020

when you build your house, I'll come by (part I)

Desert Bus for Hope 2020 is ongoing! In whatever form it's going to take, the pandemic being endemic now, at least in the US. Thankfully, Loading Ready Run is in Canada, where things are fairly under control.

At any rate, several months ago, the Duke and I decided to see how 'flyable' Caledon was, still.
[21:54] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): caledon
[21:54] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): let's rez the airship over caledon
[21:55] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Okay
[21:56] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr) laughs
[21:56] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): The rez box is still in front of the house.
[21:56] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): obvious where our attention's been :D
[21:56] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): smiles
[21:56] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr) clicks something by accident and falls into the basement
[21:57] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Okay. Make a note. Living room trapped.
This, actually, is not uncommon, even in houses I don't build? Half of everything we own seems to have built-in secret chambers.

Later...

cal-airship2
(Preparing to depart from Caledon II.)
[22:09] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): let's fly around cal want to?
[22:09] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): and look before we buy
[22:09] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Sure.
[22:09] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Port me?
[22:09] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): ok
[22:12] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr) looks waaaaaaaay up
[22:12] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): The Black Moth?
[22:12] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): yeah
[22:13] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): i can take it down
[22:13] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Well, no, just there's only one seat :D
[22:13] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): That's a fun ship, though
The Moth still has only one seat, but I did put out another on the viewing deck.

cal-airship3
(Sitting in the Viator.)
[22:13] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): this has two
[22:14] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): It does? I found the one up top....
[22:14] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): hope in front
[22:14] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): you
[22:14] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): you sit where we have absinthe
[22:14] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): i drive
[22:14] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr) blinks
[22:14] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): I'm on the wrong ship
Oops.
[22:15] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Where'd you go?
[22:15] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): TP me
So there was a bit of merry ship-changing, trying to find one that steered effectively and sat two...

cal-airship1
(The confusing where-do-we-sit-in-this airship.)
[22:22] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): try this one?
[22:22] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): if not manual fly?
[22:22] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): (if you cant fly an airship accross caledon, Caledon is dead..
[22:23] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Okay. Let's see how it goes
[22:23] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): uh
[22:24] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): i am in a tree
[22:24] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Oh dear
[22:25] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Running into a bit of lag, interesting
[22:25] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): yeah
[22:25] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): so which direction are we looking?
cal-airship4
(The Caledon air trolley frozen in midair.)
[22:26] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Also, if you notice, the Ophelia's frozen, and I'm not sure that's intentional
[22:26] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): West
[22:26] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Tamrannoch is behind us
[22:27] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Next crossing is Cal proper
[22:27] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Ooh, time shift
We ran into a lot of those. Time shift, environment shift, fog, no fog...

cal-airship5
(Facing Port Caledon, I think.)
[22:28] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Over the main port for Cal's shuttle
[22:28] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Port Caledon is straight ahead
[22:29] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): and former gearhaven...firth and middle sea
[22:30] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): the black moth
[22:30] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr) nods
[22:31] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Something used to be between Port Caledon and Caledon on Sea, and I've forgotten
[22:31] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner) smiles...
[22:31] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): really?
[22:31] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Really
[22:31] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): I'd have to dig up an old map
[22:31] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Unless that WAS Gearhaven
[22:31] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Oh dear
[22:31] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): it was gearhaven
[22:31] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): lover
[22:32] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): I thought Mayapuri/Gearhaven was farther from Cal II
[22:32] Hiro Shatner-Orr (hiro.shatner): no
[22:32] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Honestly, I remember it as being close to the Downs, so kind of confused
Go me, forgetting where the original Duchy actually was.

cal-airship6
(Moving towards the Moors.)

And we were well on our way.

(Continued in part II.)

09 November, 2020

a total eclipse in the teeth of the risk

So, we've been dealing with this person off and on in one of my groups:
[10:45] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Are Japanese travelers dressed tightly in your country? I am a Japanese housewife who loves traveling.
[10:46] Axxxxxx Bxxxxx: Hi [Yxxx]
[10:46] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: u can dress loosely too
[10:46] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): I think what she means is, her clothes are constricting, someone should probably help her out of them :p
I mean, am I wrong? That is a fun way to put it, and since her grasp of English doesn't seem that complete, I could see it happening. And let's be frank--this is a group for a sim that lets members come and play with each other? So sensual flirtation is hardly out of bounds.

But then...
[10:47] lxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: haaahhahhhah
[10:47] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: I like clothes that show off my body line.
[10:47] Kxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: body line?
Curves. I think. Is what she means.
[10:47] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Oh, you just meant tight clothes, then. Never mind.
[10:47] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): I thought you were being clever.
[10:47] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Carry on.
Kind of depressing, really. Such opportunity there. Squandered.

Her usual interaction with the group is far more direct. On the 31st of October, for instance:
[11:48] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: hi my name is [yxxx]. im japanese housewife. i like travel. japanese travellar is hot?
She always sends some iteration of this statement, and I have no idea anymore if she's just roleplaying, or serious about wanting to travel to India and "be hot".
[11:52] jxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: Don't travel till there is a vaccine, [Yxxx]
[11:52] sxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: LOL
[11:54] Sxxxxxxxxxxx Qxxxxx: lol [Jxxxx] :)
[11:56] Jxxxx Fxxxxxxx: lol
[11:58] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: hi
[12:15] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: im hot in india travel?
[12:16] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): You keep making these questions.
She does. It's always presented as, "I'm hot in Japan?" or "I'm hot in India?" or "I'm hot traveler?" Like...it's never just a statement. It's always a question. And they're weird questions.
[12:16] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: im hot in india travel?
Case in point.
[12:17] sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Kxxxx: blocked :(
[12:17] Jxxxx Fxxxxxxx: poor [yxxx]
[12:18] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Blocked? Has she done something worthy of blocking?
[12:19] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: ?
[12:20] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): I don't know either, [Yxxx]! I thought you were just asking if there was interest.
[12:22] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: mmm
But that was all she said, then, so who knows?

Later, on November 3rd:
[15:44] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: hi my name is [yxxx]. im japanese housewife. i like travel. japanese travellar is hot?
Who knows? Could be? It's a mystery for the ages.
[15:44] Yxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: smiles
[15:45] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Maybe? I'm sure someone will be able to answer that question in time.
[15:46] Hxxx Sxxxxxx: Japanese Travelers can be hot...
[15:46] mxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: hello [yxxx]
[15:46] mxxxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: nice to meet u
[15:46] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: hello
[15:47] Hxxx Sxxxxxx: depends on the selfie...
[15:47] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: me?
Well, anyone really, but yes, Ms. Y, you were the one being discussed, so...
[15:52] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: im hot in travel?
[16:02] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: i like india
[16:03] sxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: [yxxx] then why dont you come and stay in India since you like India and are hot in travel too
[16:04] Nxxxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: lool
[16:05] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: i like alone travel
[16:07] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Well, I'm confused. You like to travel alone, so you're not asking for company?
[16:10] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: my real travel photo
[16:11] Emilly Shatner-Orr (emilly.orr): Run that past me again?
Because who knows what she meant? Her profile has her RL photo? She sent her RL photo to someone? Who knows?

Then, on the 4th of November:
[09:05] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: hi my name is [yxxx]. im japanese housewife. i like travel. japanese travellar is hot? me?
[09:05] dxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: hello Namste [yxxx]
[09:05] pxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: namasty ji
"Namaste". Traditionally.
[09:05] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: hello
[09:06] Rxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: hi everyone
[09:06] Rxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: where you all
[09:06] Rxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: can any one tp me
[09:06] dxxxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: hey [yxxx] ask [yxx] he is good guy help you about your fantasy travel to india
[09:06] yxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: yes
[09:06] Rxxxxxxx Rxxxxxxx: tp me
And again, conversation trailed off. So I really have zero idea what she's actually after.

15 June, 2012

all is dark, all of the light has vanished

(from the loss album; standing in New London Village)

I lay in bed and watch the world crack around me
soundless slow but there
silvershine progression in the chill blue dark and I
wonder how I came to be here

(from the loss album; in Witt's Harrow [Adult land])

once I had a forest
with winding leaf-strewn paths and glens
a reflecting garden in a birch grove and
a spherical pond filled with clouds

(from the loss album; in the wastelands of Fort Stygian)

the fire came and
scorched that world to ash
and I rebuilt green verdant plains
seed- heavy grasses nodding in the pale wind
and a low stone wall around a stone tower

(from the loss album; at the top of the lighthouse in Second Norway)

the tower fell and I rebuilt
high stone walls reinforced with iron
a gate that locked with a sound like regret
a shield dome made of spider-silk
spinning overhead

(from the loss album; in the ruins at PinkSpider)

the spiders came, the walls fell
the cottage guarded by stone fell
into disrepair and distrust
I abandoned it save for brief visits
once to pry open the gate that had rusted shut
and this time nothingness

(from the loss album; resting in Zain)

the ground fell away from my feet
I reconstructed the wall, the gate
the cottage from memory fighting
the inclination to sink

(from the loss album; near the rail station in Hercynia Forest)

I have a gate and it is locked
I have seeds planted to stave off despair
I have swept and cleaned and lifted
carried gathered replaced until my hands bled

(from the loss album; in the abandoned church at Armada Breakaway)

it's not enough, still not enough
but it is there, it is
all there is
the ground bare and bleak but
solid, the gate standing fixed in place

(from the loss album; looking over the water in Mushroom Ruins)

today I rebuild the wall
and we will see how it feels then

Yeah. I'm not making it to Oopskate. But I deeply appreciate the invitation.

06 June, 2012

always one step rewind

I have changed, I have changed
just like you, just like you

(from the loss album; walking through tall grass at Enscharys)

So, long distance relationships...They can be something of a high-wire act. While direct physical contact isn't always present, emotional contact is, and the emotional impact can be huge. There can be an incredibly layered intimacy to every word and thought exchanged.

for how long, for how long
must I wait?
I know there's something wrong

(from the loss album; balancing the ghost spires at Enscharys)

With this comes increased vulnerability, and a greater-than-average inclination towards misinterpretation. This is lessened by speaking (phone, Skype, in person) over texting, but not completely, because what even the spoken word lacks is body language and facial expressions. (And before anyone points it out--yes, I know, we live in a world of webcams, but that's not a perfect solution, either.)

your concrete heart isn't beating
and I've tried to
make it come alive

Of course, what no one tells us until we're in a relationship--in person or online--is that even living day to day with a partner cannot remove all conflict, arguments or misinterpretation. Add in the factor of the loved one being so far away, and that in itself can give rise to fears, anxieties, doubts...anxious thoughts and worries that we might not ever consider for a closer partner.

no shadows, just further lights
now I'm here to rescue you...

(from the loss album; contemplation at Redemption Hill)

Push all that aside, how'ver. Those are all valid points, but what about when things go wrong? And actually, this one applies to all relationships, not just for those of us in love long-distance: these are complications that can occur for friends, acquaintances, even business partners. If we're not on the contact list when someone takes ill, or is severely injured, we may never know what--if anything--happened.

oh, I'm still alive
I'm still alive
I cannot apologize, no

(from the loss album; peering through the window in Redemption Hill)

And through the mirror darkly, we try to ascertain if the shapes we see in the distance are the distant reflections of our beloved, or our own uncertainty and doubt peering back. And sometimes, it's really, really hard to tell.

so silent, no violence
but inside my head, so loud and clear

So, how do we cope in such situations? As hours turn into days, days into weeks--if we're very unlucky, weeks into months or years...How do we divide signal from noise, in those instances? What can we do to regain our faith? How long are we willing to wait to hear word from those we haven't heard from?

you're screaming, you're screaming
covered up with a smile
I've learned to fear

There are some tried and true tips. Not all of them may work.
  • Call them. Do you have their number? Then make a brief call. If they answer, problem solved. If not...well, it sounds very callous, but you're no worse off than you were before.
  • Write them. Do you have their email address? Do you have their physical address? You might want to try those, or alternate means of contact--keeping in mind the parameters of your relationship. (This is where words like "discreet" become irritating--if no one else in their lives know you exist? Your attempt to make contact just got harder.)
  • Talk to their friends. This one's always going to be last on the list, primarily because that involves other people in your search for reconnection--people who, let's be honest, may not know you exist either. But barring other options, it's something to consider, thin thread of hope that it might be.
just sunshine and blue sky
is this all we get?
(is this all we get?)
for living here?

(from the loss album; listening to the violinist at Delicatessen)

On a personal note, that last step is where I'm at. Made even more cumbersome because I doubt my beloved's friends do know about me. So...it's a delicate balancing act, currently. How much information is too much? And to make matters more complicated, I have a vanishingly few friends to ask. Because in my particular case, I'm also trusting their discretion as well as mine. That doubles the anxiety level.

come fire, come fire
let it burn
and love come racing through

I think it's going to be a few more months before I talk to anyone...but I admit, the temptation is nearly palpable. Still, knowing I could reach out (and potentially damage the trust this beloved has in me) versus not being able to reach out at all? It's a stark comfort, to be sure, but oddly comforting all the same.

Still, all that aside, it's an odd place for me to be in. I walked into Second Life with years of open relationships behind me. Immediately I fell in love with several individuals for whom privacy was paramount. I made mistakes. I didn't keep all confidences as closely as I should have, because--even with over a decade spent online--I'd never fallen for anyone whose partners didn't know about me. (This is how odd it was for me: a while back, I was involved with someone who lived near Berkeley, and he wanted to see me. I spent a joyous week with him, and his lady wife, and I met both her significant other, and two more of his sigs...and yes, this felt absolutely normal to me. It still does.)

oh, I'm still alive
I'm still alive
I cannot apologize, no

(from the loss album; spinning gears under Jubilee flags at Clockwork Kingdom)

And above all else, I have to take responsibility for my choices in this. I cannot attempt any solution blind, for the fear it will harm something that has been, up to now, a good and sustaining and wondrous thing. This is worry, yes. This is anxiety, yes. But as much as I admit to feeling those things, I cannot allow myself to be guided solely by these feelings. I must take responsibility for my actions, and accept what each day brings me, in the hopes that one day, it will bring this absent beloved back to me.

I've learned to lose
I've learned to win
I've turned my face against the wind

(from the loss album; Matrix rain in shallow water at Trinity's Dream)

I suppose the trick is, how loyal are we when we make our agreements, take our vows? When we promise what we promise to these loves so far away? I have never been the sort to flounce off after a week's inattention; it's not in me, I just can't imagine it. Nor am I thinking that this particular love is "cheating" in any sense--since, after all, I'm in a polyamorous open marriage RL, and I'm generally the same in SL, it wouldn't occur to me to restrict someone else to bonds I don't have.

I will move fast
I will move slow
take me where I have to go

(from the loss album; sitting under the rotunda at Omega Point)

Honestly, I'm more worried. Was there an accident? Did my love get injured? Did something more dire happened? I'm worrying over those possibilities, over pondering if the love we share itself has changed; mainly because this love is also not the type to hit a snag and simply flounce off in a lavender fog of drama.

oh, I'm still alive
I'm still alive
I cannot apologize, no

(from the loss album; musing on the sunset at Risk City

Ultimately, we make our own choices, we rise or fall by the strength of them. I'm not falling yet. There's time. There's hope. There's faith. But it's been three months now with no word. I fear my arms tire of reaching across the distance, and hearing nothing but the echoes of my heartbeat in return.

(Song is Lisa Miskovsky's "Still Alive", from EA's "Mirror's Edge" game. Just for fun, here's the Minecraft version of the trailer. Outfit worn on this long, strange journey today was mostly the Kami jacket from Cup of Crown [catch them soon, they're closing!] and the cage dress skirt from Stringer Mausoleum--honestly, no idea if it's available any more.)

it's just your shadow on the floor

(This section was written on July 11th...) Great. Sat myself down today after oversleeping, and told myself sternly I was not going to log...
